Shawn Hager resigns as head football coach at Sheldon Clark.
#1
As of today Hager makes it official. Within a year our two longest tenure coaches have left or changed jobs. Hager will still be the baseball coach.
#2
Does not surprise me with what he has dealt with in the administration. Good luck Coach Hager.
#3
Who's name is the rumor mill for their next head coach?

i hate to hear that about coach hager he was well liked. as far as administration i really believe its just the lack of support from the superintendent. As far as i know he gets along great with the current and former principal. still hate to see him go even though I'm not surprised.

Can the board not get rid of the yokel in the Superintendent chair? He will be the demise of all athletics at SC. Tim Adams from JC would be a great option, proven support for both students and athletics during his tenure.

There seems to be a whole lot of superintendentitis going around this year!!

How many kids will leave Sheldon Clark to play football at other schools ?

Martin County has talent.
2 team state wrestling championships.
20-30 ind. state wrestling champions.
2X Boys basketball state championships.
A Former Ms. Basketball.
At least 2 regional football championships that I can remember.

For a smaller 3A school, SC has one of the best athletic traditions in the state.

^^^

The biggest hurdle at SC (aside from the administration and facilities) is the fact there may not be a County in KY that has been hit harder by the coal industry decline.

People don't move in to Martin County any more and it is tough to get that booster funding and sponsor money that goes a long way in building a program. In addition, the job issue taxes the flexibility to find volunteers to help keep the youth program a float.

I have always liked the SC program... but if I am a young coach this is a tough gig to go after. You will have one of the tougher 3A Districts to compete in and there is always going to be kids who opt to go to Johnson Central for High School instead on the edges of your county.

Also looking at losing players to Belfry on the other edge of the county. Some places in Martin County are probably closer to Belfry HS than Sheldon Clark, geographically.

SC football has a lot of tradition. With the new high school and all new sports fields to be built in the next three years it makes it an even more attractive position. Who will be the next coach of the Cards?
#13
If it's me I go after a young guy that has had some success. Someone to light a fire into the program again. I loved watching the older breathitt and Sheldon Clark games. Sheldon Clark has athletes. Yeah the coal industry has crushed their economy but they still have enough athletes to win on friday nights. Job would be a good one with the new facilities being built and things.

What new facilities are being built? I think the biggest X factor to Sheldon Clark is their non district schedule. That's going to give more life to the program than anything, because as far as finding a coach....they will be hard pressed to find somebody better than Shawn Hager. As good? Maybe. Better? That's a stretch.

What I do know is they can't keep on playing Ashland, Hazard, Pikeville, Prestonsburg (even though I know it's a long time rival) to go along with their district of Belfry, Lawrence and Pike Central who they have to play.

Good luck to coach Hagar and to SC on finding his replacement.

The new Martin County High School is currently under architect plans. The blueprint shows all new sports fields surrounding the school. Even with a separate practice football field. The school will be built along the new Callaham highway going from Inez-Warfield-WV.

How far is that away from the current SCHS?

That's the area where I live, that you're referring to. I'd say from my house till about 5 or 10 miles up is closer to Belfry. I'm on the Pike/Mingo/Martin line literally... could throw a rock to Mingo and Pike.
#19
Telling ya guys, and it's nothing all of you don't know, but the biggest kicker in this whole situation is their non district schedule the next two years....anybody know what that is? Because I still stand by my statement that they will be hard pressed to find somebody as good as Shawn.
#20
Non district schedule next year - prestonsburg, pikeville, paintsville, Morgan co, Betsy Lane, raceland, tug valley
#21
I heard that Tony Burchett applied for the job.
#22
Interesting, but not shocked at all. Brings him back closer to Lawrence County if nothing else. Or did Tony live there when he helped at Lawrence and Johnson Central?
#23
The word around Prestonsburg is coach Hager will be a Blackcat next year.
#24
I have talked to him lately and he has not mentioned that only thing he has said is he has had several offers. Wow if this is true then I wish him the best. Hager and Coach D hooking up never would have thought that

Good Luck to Coach Hager on any future coaching, he's such a great coach! On the other hand, some coaches have to realize as soon as your out the door the next fella is going through the back door
#27
That is true but unfortunately for the good people of Martin County, the one coming through the back door will not be able to save the program. With the truth emerging about the fact that no new facilities will be built, lack of participation from students and support from the current administration it will be an impossible undertaking. How will they attract a top notch candidate with the treatment that Coach Hager had to endure?
#28
Unless their locker room and weight room are practically non existant...that 500K field should go a long way I would think.

As far as enrollment dropping, ask Belfry and they will tell you that's the best thing to ever happen to them. Took a while. But, their success with 700 is far away better than it was back in the day with 1000 or more. (Granted, so has 6 classes, but even still).

Their weight room is not very nice and their locker room is worst than non existent. They didn't replace the locker room when they built the field. Last year the sewer was backing up into it. Its toxic.

Has any legal action been taken to the top? Uncalled for. That's a joke if they are letting that go on....to put it as PG as I can.
