2A District 8 playoff scenarios
#1
After 2 weeks of district play, everything is still up in the air with playoff seedings. This week Leslie hosts P-Burg and Betsy Layne hosts Valley.

Right now, P-Burg is 2-0, Valley and Leslie are both 1-1, and BL is 0-2. With each possible scenario, here's how it plays out:

A) P-Burg and Valley win

1. P-Burg (3-0)
2. SV (2-1)
3. Leslie (1-2)
4. BL (0-3)

B) Leslie and Valley win

1. P-Burg / SV / Leslie (3-way tie at 2-1)
4. BL (0-3)

C) P-Burg and BL win

1. P-Burg (3-0)
2. SV / Leslie / BL (3-way tie at 1-2)

D) Leslie and BL win

1. Leslie (2-1 w/ head-to-head tiebreaker)
2. P-Burg (2-1)
3. BL (1-2 w/ head-to-head tiebreaker)
4. SV (1-2)

A 3-way tie is broken by totaling up the wins for 4 of the opponents each tied team has defeated (excluding the other teams involved in the tiebreaker).

So far, each team's non-district defeated opponenets' wins:

P-Burg: S Clark (1), Clay (1), Powell (2), Pike Cent (4), Hazard (6)

Valley: Paris (6), E Ridge (3), Hurley (5), Harlan (3), Grundy (0)

Leslie: Harlan (3), Knott (1), Morgan (2), McCreary (0), Clay (1), Jackson (1)

BL: Phelps (0), Allen Cent (2), Knott (1), S Floyd (4), Magoffin (5)

P-Burg also still has a game against Lawrence (7 wins), Valley has a game with Fleming (6 wins), Leslie has South Laurel (1 win), and BL has Jenkins (1 win).

It appears that Valley is in excellent shape in a tiebreaker. Prestonsburg could gain several points by defeating Lawrence in week 10. Leslie will probably lose any 3-team tiebreaker scenario.

Thanks for clearing this up . Wasn't for sure how this worked .

If Coaching at any of these Schools I would want the #1 or #2 Seed. Home field, other than that it really don't matter. #1 or #2, one will get Somerset and the other will get Middlesboro. Both will be a tough Out. When the play-offs start look for teams with the most tradition to Win!!!

Just wondering about wins against out of state teams in a playoff scenario... Do they count?

Excellent breakdown of the playoff scenarios by the way. I really don't think there's a dominant team in the whole region. I think all 8 teams have enough talent on a good night to beat any of the others.

The KHSAA rulebook states that out-of-state teams are eligible to be counted. The win over Hurley (5-2) looks to be a good one for Shelby Valley.

Thanks for the compliment. I decided to look it up after I read a comment on here that said a win by Leslie would definitely send SV on the road for the playoffs.

The way it looks to me, in a potential 3-way tie between P-Burg, Valley, and Leslie, the Eagles would be the odd team out and get the #3 seed.

Great job breaking it down! How about the cross district how's the seeding looking over there?

So pretty much all that has to happen is for valley to beat BL and they will get atleast the 2 seed. If Leslie somehow beats pburg than sv looks like they will have the 1 seed locked up and pburg should still get the 2 seed with the tiebreaker. Leslie looks to be playing for the 3 seed regardless. I hope Leslie beats pburg though because then my wildcats get the 1 seed and take home playoff throughout !
#9
I'll be very shocked if Pburg doesn't beat Leslie and Shelby Valley doesn't beat Betsy Layne.

1. Pburg
2. SV
3. Leslie
4. BL

Not quite...

I would project in the event of a 3-way tiebreaker

Pburg
Pike Central- 5 (Think they beat PCC)
Betsy Layne -6 (Think they beat Jenkins)
Hazard- 8 (Think they beat SC and Pineville)
*Lawrence County- 7 (Think Pburg beats LC)
26 Points Most Likely

Valley
Paris- 8 (Think they beat Bracken Co and Berea)
*Betsy Layne -6 (Think they beat Jenkins and SV beats BL)
Hurley- 6 (Think they beat Phelps and lose to Honaker)
Harlan/East Ridge- 4 (Either schedule I see them winning one)
24 Point Most Likely

Leslie
Not even worth doing..even if they beat Pburg to foprce a 3 way tie their wins won't come close

That Pburg vs. LC game begins huge in event of a 3 way tie breaker. If Pburg wins they win the tiebreaker..if they lose SV is in the drivers' seat.

As mentioned though..don't think we even come to this... I think Pburg handles Leslie by at least 2 TD's and wins the District.

So the games vs Harlan and Fleming co. If they beat Fleming co.For valley won't count ? I'm a lil confused with the last post .

Harlan is what I meant instead of Jenkins.. I will edit, but I apologize because I completely overlooked Fleming County.

Fleming will either have 6 or 7 points if SV can beat them and would probably be their 4th countable game.

My guess is Fleming finishes with 7 points and upset Mason Co. At which point it is conceivable that we have either another tie (Which would go to Pburg due to Head to head)..or SV wins w/ 27 points. IF they beat Fleming.

Ok, thank you .

EKU, Hurley has already played and lost to Honaker. According to Maxpreps, they still have games remaining against Phelps, Twin Valley, and Haysi. They would be favored to win the first two but lose to Haysi. So that win should be worth 7 points by the end of the year.

Also, East Ridge has remaining games against Jackson Co. and South Floyd. They could very well win both, one, or none of those two games. But if they did win both, then the victory over ER becomes worth 5 points.

District 7 will be all lined out after Friday:

LCA at Danville - Winner will be the 1-seed; Loser will be the 2-seed
Somerset at Middlesboro - Winner will be the 3-seed; Loser will be the 4-seed

To many options right now. Eagles just need to win

EKU, I also noticed in the tiebreaker procedures that head-to-head would not come into play in that situation. If two teams in a 3-way tie are still tied after using four defeated opponents' wins, then they simply go to a fifth defeated opponent.

Basically, it appears to me that P-Burg has no way of winning a tiebreak unless they beat Lawrence. If they do, then Valley would likely still win a tiebreak IF they defeat Fleming. If they lost to Fleming, then P-Burg would likely get it.

All the teams can still help themselves by winning. Prestonsburg will lock up the #1 seed with a win. Leslie can also grab the #1 seed if they win and Valley loses.

In the other game, a win by SV guarantees no worse than the #2 seed, and a chance at the #1 seed if Leslie wins. So plenty still at stake.
