It's bound to change from time to time. Look at Danville. They were a machine. They have fallen on hard times. But, as you can see they are starting to rebound. Just stick with them. Overall, I think Ky football is making huge advancements.

I think the new rules that KHSAA has programed will futher weaken Kentucky high school football. Now A student may be weak in academic subjects but parent can't hold him back in middle school because he would loose his senior year of elgibility. I sometimes think it is designed to hurt interscholastic athletics. Sometimes parents just feel their children are just behind in maturity. I personally feel that if A parent wants to hold his or her child back to let him better develop in athletics then let that be. BELEIVE ME WATCH WHAT THAT IS GOING TO DO FOR US.

I see Kentucky advancing and moving in the right direction on some things, but overall, the whole state seems weaker than usual. Kentucky is still way behind when compared to states like Tennessee and Ohio. maybe having a good UK team would help change that Smile

Kentucky football is much better than it was 25 years ago.

Having A good UK team will help, however if we don't sign Ky high school talent we will not get extended results, Brooks set Ky football so far we will feel the results of him for years to come, He was ask one time why he didn't have more KY. boys on scholarship, his answer was that KY. boys just couldn't compete in the SEC, well guess what he was loosing almost every game in the SEC with boys from every where else. I would have druther lost with Ky boys. JUST THINKING

NO NO E Army not even close it started down hill with the coach we stole from Alabama, I though something was wrong when the Alabama Fans were glad we stole him.

I didn't mention his name but it was Bill Curry.

There were more boys playing for Western Ky University from the State of Kentucky, When they beat Us, than we had on the field playing for Kentucky.

Topnotch,
That is not how the new rule works. You are still capable of holding children back. In my opinion it will still happen and in many cases should happen. However, the only thing that changes is they will not be able to compete in athletics during a hold back year. So they can play in 6th grade hold back in 6th grade and not compete that year and then resume all activities in 7th grade. The child still has the extra year to mature and develop, however they just won't be competing in the same grade for 2 years.

Thanks for that information, That proves what I posted why on earth would we want to keep any child from competing if it was not directed at him for punishment, If you can tell me how keeping A kid from playing anything will benefit that kid I would like for you to share it with me. If you will tell me who gains from keeping A child from playing, or who will it damage if they play, I would like to know, Maybe there is something I don't know about. I look forward to reading your post they are usually well received and informative, Personally I feel we should find ways to keep our children elgible however we in Ky (KHSAA) makes every effort to find ways to deny elgibility. THANKS

they already had a rule for this being 19 years old after August 1 your senior year. I agree with top notch, Heck if you think you are keeping those kids not being held back from some punishment you are just delaying it a year.

what I meant by having a good UK team was that maybe more kids will come out to play football in hopes of playing for their home state WildcatsSmile

Let me start by saying I'm in no way trying to persuade your opinion of the topic. I understand your stance and there are pros/cons for both sides. First a few hypothetical scenarios. If a junior in high school is young enough to repeat his junior year and still fall under the KHSAA guide lines should they be permitted 5 years of high school athletics? If a 7th grade athlete wins state championship, named all-state, and plays in a all-american game what do they gain from holding back and playing against 7th graders again? Should a kid be permitted to compete for the same state championship 2 years in a row? What does a kid really gain from holding back, and can he not still obtain that from not playing during his hold back year?

My opinion is that is should be the parents and the parents only decision whether or not to hold their child back. However, being in their rights to hold their child back I believe it is feasible for the Schools or a governing body to limit a child from participating if holding back. It makes sense to limit eligibility to 1 year in each grade level. You asked how keeping a kid from playing would benefit anything. Honestly, it doesn't benefit anyone, but the benefit is the kid gaining a year to mature and develop his/her skill set. But, I don't think it could be considered punishment. Punishment would be like you previously stated that the kid would lose his senior year of eligibility. I would like to add, although it is my opinion that they shouldn't compete during their hold back I see no reason why they should not be allowed to practice with the school team. But, it is what it is, the rule is in place and just like all rules there are pros/cons and people will approve or oppose it.

I can understand not letting A kid double in high school, I think that should be case to case basic and I have no problems with age limit but the rule IMO Hurts over all athletic development ability in Kentucky and Is directed toward 11 or 12 years old and has not one say so. How many times have you seen a little kid to small but is A HS star he walks down the street the next year and you look at your friend and he says what a man if he would have just had just one more year. I think this is A clear place for the old saying IF IT ANT BROKE DON"T FIX IT. I didn't know it was broke. Why did they put that rule in the first place. Did you hear anyone complain. I suggest if we want to enhance athletics in Ky. We start with placing the KHSAA under A governing body other than A board of of directors controlled by the comissinor I challenge any one out there to show me any receipts and expence books. Each school board in KY must have A set of books that are A matter of public record. Have you ever seen any Books or expense system displayed by KHSAA I suggest the KHSAA come under the same procedures adapted by our school boards. I WILL ASK ONE MORE QUESTION> WHAT IS THE COMMISINORS SALARY INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO PERKS EXPENSE ACCOUNTS ALL SOURCES. I don't think they come under any KY governmental agency.

Yes. And objectively, it is more "fair" considering that fairness should extend to the -other- boys also. It's not right to have a big 12-13 y/o 6th grader compete with younger boys who are smaller and less physically mature. None of this is about high school. It's not nearly as big a difference later on at the varsity level.

I think you're missing the fact that they can still hold back letting them mature and develop their skills. So your example of the kid just needing another year isn't valid. I believe the main reason behind the rule is consistency. Before it was left up to the schools site base to decide whether or not the kids could play during a hold back year. With middle school athletics growing greatly in kentucky there was a need for a rule to govern all schools making all schools play under the same rules. Believe it or not more schools already had this rule adopted rather than those who let hold backs play. In all honesty whether you like to believe it or not, Middle School Athletics in Kentucky are growing and headed in the right direction. There are numerous states trying to emulate what Kentucky is doing right now.

One quick question on holding a kid back for "maturity" issues....

If you can tell a kid needs to mature more in 7th grade and be held back, wouldn't you have been able to see that when the kid was 5 for example? Why not just start the kid a year late, to my knowledge you can do that, or talk with his teachers and have him do pre school twice. I would imagine that only 5% of kids in southern KY have a legitimate shot at playing college football so I don't think I would ever hold my kids back just for that reason. When I was in school, I never noticed a difference in kids that were 6 months younger than me but in the same grade. Maybe I haven't been exposed to these types of kids as much, but I still believe holding a kid back in school is useless other than he failed the grade, in which case his priorities should be school work and not athletics.
I would have hated getting held back a year and starting life later than all my friends that I grew up with.

I understand where you are coming from, However, I have seen many, many, kids that have left for college A year or two too soon and have bombed out completely,, I have seen many, many, more that have changed majors that has put them far behind, try paying for A extra year in college, In the real world some Kids need that extra year, Sometimes Daddy's and Mammas need that extra year.
