JC thinks they should be #1 in the State and Eastern Ky because they beat a couple of teams from Mexico, a Canadian team. I heard next year Matney trying to schedule a team from a small village in South Africa!!!!!!

EKUAlum05 Wrote:Having watched replay what continues to stick out to me was that 3rd Quarter.
For anyone wanting to play the "Belfry was flat" card... that 3rd Quarter was the story of the game. Belfry was not flat in the 3rd...in fact they looked like the Belfry team everyone expected. The fact remains Belfry was held scoreless in the 3rd giving Pikeville their best shot.
If anyone wants to make excuses as to why Belfry lost I present that Quarter as evidence that the better team Friday night clearly won. To be honest, Belfry was actually lucky they did not lose by more. Pikeville scored 7 points off Belfry turnovers, but 14 of Belfry's 20 points came as the result of Panther turnovers. In addition, if Pikeville doesn't have a holding call on that first drive in the 4th Quarter...they not only probably avoid an Interception...but they were moving it well enough they probably tag on another score.
Now I am going to give my constructive criticism for Belfry having seen the replay:
- The blocking of the HB's is AWFUL!!!!! For this Belfry offense to work the HB's have to make their blocks and help seal the edge... the effort from the HB's was dismal and missed blocks directly led to about 3 Tackles For Loss.
- Pikeville gave a blueprint to neutralize this Belfry Front 7 everyone was bragging about. Spread the D-Linemen out and cut them down... use misdirection to make the DE's and LB's sit in their tracks trying to read the play. By the time Belfry could get their feet Pikeville had a 3 yard surge or had a quick hitter on the pass... individual effort then gave them bigger yards and conversions. Corners have to get tougher and the LB's and End's have to be more aggressive.
- Passing game as abysmal and non-existent. Belfry has proven you can win without passing, but without the threat of a pass the theory doesn't work. You don't need much to have that... the fear of the quick hitch or a short 10 yard out alone changes the dynamic..right now I don't even have the confidence they can execute that.
- Belfry has played progressively worse each game.
Henry Clay: Total team effort and domination
Harlan County: Total domination, but execution flaws on the option and bad play by the subs
Southwestern: Attrocious penalties negating scores and allowing SW to stay in the game... a lone defensive breakdown.
Pikeville: Well we just saw...
Belfry should have some time to get healthy and work on themselves the next two weeks. Gallia Academy and Sheldon Clark should both be teams Belfry can handle going away. I don't think either game will really tell us anything about Belfry. Someone needs to emerge as a leader...and someone needs to take the HB position as run with it until Catron returns.
EXACTLY. If Hatfield doesn't go out of the game for a series in the 3rd QTR I think Belfry scores on that drive gives the Pirates some life. But it didn't happen that way. I'm not sure why Haywood went away from feeding the FB the ball. He was stopped a few plays for 2 or 3 yards, but Belfry's offense really opens up when all the focus is on the FB and the HB's can break it outside. Although the blocking was terrible, so I'm not sure if that would have even worked. This team needs someone to lift them up when they are down, and as of right now, they don't have that. Hopefully this loss will wake these kids up.

No idea how so many threads turn into a JC thread. Pikeville and Belfry both have teams that have a chance to make it to a state championship game. This is great for Mountain Football. Prestonsburg is another team that has a very good chance to make it this year. Hate that Belfry and Pburg aren't playing this year. They usually had some good games.
Now to the JC/Highland post lol. Alot of teams roads have ended at Highlands. Belfry wasn't exactly burning it up when they were in Highlands Class. SC's best year was ended by Highlands. One of the worst beatings I've ever seen was Highlands VS LC. So for a Mountain team to make fun of another mountain team for getting beat by Highlands is quite funny.

My comment was feeding off that. It was a joke. Well, that plus JC has never won anything of consequence in football, but SOME of their fans act as if they are world beaters. So I was digging on them a little. All in good fun.

I for one would love it if eastern Kentucky had four classes represented in Bowling Green. It is very possible. I'm not saying all four being PBURG, Belfry, Pikeville, and JC would have a good shot at winning a state title, but I do think all four could get there. I wish there was a 4A program in eastern Kentucky that had a shot of making it. The way the programs are improving every year its very possible for 1a, 2a, 3a and 5a to consistently be in the mix. I wish JC would move down. They'd definitely have a shot at a state title in 4a, and would not be challenged much in the east.

I've analyzed and over analyzed this game since Friday night. Here are my takeaways.
. Pikeville is a very, very good ball club. Congrats to them for giving the rest of the state the blue print to beat Belfry.
. Belfry lacks a Sani Warren like leader. Last year when down big to Pike Central he threw the team on his back on pumped everyone up. I don't see that guy emerging just yet. It should be Taylor but I don't think he is comfortable in that roll yet.
. As good as Pikeville is this was a trap game thats been a long time coming. Until Friday night not a single boy on that field remembers a time that Pikeville even competed with Belfry (2002, 2006), let alone beat them. For these boys they knew Pikeville as an easy win, not Belfry's oldest and fiercest rival. Add that onto the fact that they have been crowned the 3A state champs even before the season started and you have a recipe for disaster.
. Over the last 3 games the Pirates have proceeded to take direct aim at their foot and pull the trigger. Until Friday night the Defense has been able to cover for the offenses issues. Pikeville eliminated that advantage with a short passing game that setup Pugh for a big night. I agree that Pikeville dominated this game, but I will also say, had Belfry not decided to grab so much laundry for the field they very likely would have been on top of this one.
. I've been saying all year, to beat Belfry you have to be more than one star and Pikeville proved just that Friday night.
I think this is a wake up call. I also think there could be 1 or 2 more losses on the schedule before all is said and done. This is a very good Belfry ball club but they have got to get the kinks worked out on offense. Ineffective passing game, penalties on almost every big gain, a backfield that still has no true leader going into game 5.
We will likely learn very little the next two games but when CAK comes to town we will see how much work has been done to cover the pass and get pressure on the QB.
In closing I feel bad for Sheldon Clark and at least the loss wasn't to Pike Central.

This is the big one. If Pikeville was winning 1 in 4 or 5 of each game vs. Belfry there wouldn't be the degree of shock expressed in this thread (10 pages of discussion !!!).
If there was no Pikeville/Belfry (incl Belfry's recent 3A title) past history with which to pre-judge the game, there may have been mild surprise at the outcome. But it most certainly wouldn't have been shock. Pikeville is a well-built, well-coached and talented team.
I don't believe there would have been near the degree of shock (except for some of Belfry's diehards...lol) if this had been Prestonsburg who beat Belfry. The difference ? P-burg has beaten Belfry in the recent past. To me, that says folks never gave Pikeville the "respect", for lack of a better term, they should have (considering Pikeville beat P-burg this year). Select folks are -still- having a problem with it.

Well I am hear to have my crow. I didn't think Pikeville stood a chance in this game.
I give a HUGE CONGRATS to the Panthers!!! Pikeville needed this win as much as Belfry needed this loss. Pikeville to give this team confidence in themselves that they are capable of making a long awaited trip to Bowling Green. Belfry to bring a young team back to earth, and let them know they can be beat on any given night. (although I myself didn't think so).
Hopefully the win for Pikeville and the lose for Belfry will propel both teams to Bowling Green. Good luck to both the rest of the year.
Enjoy PHSforever!!
On a side note: It makes our last second loss by 1 point at Pikeville not look so bad.
Almost forgot. It is great to see a team lose with class to your rival and the same to the team winning with class. Kudos to both fan bases.
