I would've posted these earlier, but just now got our electricity restored.

I saw something yesterday from a thunderstorm that I've never seen before. We rarely receive the "brunt" of a storm, with mountains so close to us on both sides. Normally, they will either go to our west and up that chain or to our east toward Cloverfork. Well, yesterday was different. I was in my kitchen, and then I heard this thing coming, long before it hit. So Pap and I go outside and what we saw, we had never seen before. A literal wall of water was behind the strongest winds I've ever seen. The tops of 100 foot trees were literally touching the ground. Pap ran outside; I retrieved my outside kitty and ran inside!!!! I did search for rotating clouds, but what I saw was different. They were "boiling" is my best description. Sort of rotating sideways like in the movie Independence Day. We've lost several trees, and Pap is mad. Said we wouldn't live long enough to enjoy shade in our back yard again!! LOL

These funnel clouds were documented about 2 miles north of my home. The tree that's hanging over the power lines, I can see from my front door. This tree was uprooted in Filthy Animal's front yard, and fell down the hill to land on the power lines.

Is everyone OK?

I have heard of NO injuries! Although as severe as these storms were, I'm not sure about the entire county.

God is good.

Granny Bear you need to send that pic of the funnel cloud to the weather channel. Quite an amazing pic to say the least.

I don't know that any of the 5 reported actually touched down, but I know the people who took these pictures, and both were rotating clouds.

I don't know how to do that Tiger Blues.

Should I expect worse storms in WKY?
Ive been spoiled during life to have mountains all around me.
Ive sit through 4000 tornado warnings in Whitley County knowing it would be nearly impossible for one to get wedged in between two mountains and actually do anything. Never seen or heard of one close to home.
I expect different with all of this flat land.
The good thing about living right on I75, other than the quick travel to anywhere, was the fact that if I went east I could see all the mountains I wanted, and if I went west, I could see all the flat land I wanted. It truly was on the cusp of Appalachia.

I would say you could expect worse storms in WKY.

Tornadoes rarely form in the mountains, but if they get locked in from the "wedged" mountains, it could be katy bar the door!!

"cusp of Appalachia"...who did you get that from?? I know you didn't make that up yourself.

I don't either Granny Bear but I bet they would show it on air and post it to their website. It's a great pic. Sorry about your trees.

Brandon Orr, meteorologist for WYMT-TV, posted on his face book that contrary to popular thought, there were no tornadoes in Harlan County during that storm. He also announced that he was going to be doing some kind of work shop on the news tonight, to help people tell the difference. I sent these pictures to him on face book.

I know the two people who took those pictures, and am comfortable in believing them when they tell me they were rotating clouds. Now, I know that if they don't touch down, they are not considered a tornado. I don't know if any of these actually touched down or not, it's impossible to tell sometimes in the mountains because you can't follow the cloud all the way to the ground. But looking at the funnel clouds, both are completely white. So that suggests that there is no debris in the funnel, so probably no contact with the ground.

Perhaps we didn't have an official tornado after all.

This weather stuff fascinates me.

We should be able to file a lawsuit every time a weather man predicts wrong.

Granny Bear, a sad note that happened Tuesday. A 2-3 year old black bear was struck by a car on US23 in Prestonsburg and unfortunately died. You can see the article in the Middlesboro paper. I'm sorry about the bear granny but your avatar reminded me about it.

Granny You and everyone in the state of Kentucky need to pay attention to the weather today 7/27/14. They are giving very strong storms with larg hail and they are giving a pretty high chance of tornadoes. I don't think they are giving anything as strong as what we got in 2012 but it could be pretty bad.
I hate this kind of weather! I am going to go find me a hole somewhere to crawl in.:Shaking:

Man I hope this ends up to be less then what they think like it sometimes does.:beg:

According to the weather models my NEKY Facebook friends are posting, it looks like it is going to be a rough day. Be smart and safe.
GG, when a storm that scares you remember Psalm 91:11 For he will command his angels concerning to guard you in your ways.

Be weather aware folks. Turn up the volume on those weather radios.

Here's a great radar source I always use.

Keep an eye and ear to the sky, tv, and radio and have a blessed Sunday!
