Every coach in every sport got a RIF letter today....does this mean coaches in Martin Co will be looking for other jobs?!!!!
05-06-2014, 05:16 PM
Yes we heard. Unbelievable that they have to wait to hear if they are rehired or what their pay will be! "What's best for the kids" is the motto of the 'hire-ups'.... Well this is a complete joke and the mass public should be outraged! ....I do not blame any coach that decides to pursue jobs outside of Martin Co.!!!

Must be the new move, hearing the same thing is coming in Martinville, I mean Middlesboro. Steve Martin the super is said to have called for the same move. Personally I think it is a power trip by people who think they have a vast knowledge of sports. Not a professional move. IMO

That's the way it's always been in Pike County, to my knowledge. You'll get one a week later saying you're rehired (if you are) and asking you to accept.

SC is in Martin County not Pike

Heard that Smith was cut $ 26,000, and that hager and Rice also received letters of large pay cuts. All extended days were cut out. Looks like it doesn't pay to be a coach in Martin County when you have a superintendent that isn't a sports fan. People in the county ought to be pissed off about this because losing coaches like Smith, Rice and Hager would be devastating but thanks to a superintendent that does not care about sports to any degree this is what we get.

She knows that.
She is just stating what happens at most other school districts.
Coaching is non-tenured and you are re-hired EVERY year in Pike County.

Thanks, region.
I figured with "Martin County" being in the thread title that I didn't need to explain... also thought most know I'm actually FROM Martin County. nicker:

Stifling creativity, physical activity, team collaboration, taking their motivation away, ...remember, constant turnover is in no way a positive thing. These coaches and staff members being cut or having their salaries cut, will devestate this area.

no coach is worth $20 thousand a year. sorry. if that is indeed what they are paying smith then that is ridiculous and a well deserved cut is needed. people here in lawrence want to pay cook something like that but they complain about the lack of textbooks or a raise in their property tax. and no way smith would get the lawrence job. mark it down.

A lot of coaches make that much and more in this area. But great hope Lawrence don't hire we will be happy to keep him. We actually appreciate our coaches in martin county unlike u all. After what cook did in the time he was there no way should he have been aloud to walk right out the door. Poor job by the Lc adminstration but that could be about to change from what were hearing. Spurlock is the best choice. Hire him.

you speak like some lc fans about cook. you all think that all it would take is for the administration to say "cook stay" and he would have. what did he want? a raise? not gonna happen. what has he done? back to back 20 win seasons? that's good. but titles get you raises. people say his job was in jeopardy. no shot that's true. every year non-tenured teachers receive the same type of letter stating that their job may not be rehired. seldom ever happens and never happens to head coaches of major sports. so that debunks theory #2.
i know it is hard for people to understand but there is a life outside of eastern kentucky. some people like the draw of larger populated areas. easier to get talent year in year out. besides, lc was good mainly out of two kids to transferring in. it is hardly that cook "built" the program. he fell in to a nice situation.

as far as cook goes, i have never met the guy, but i do know how bad they were before he got there. they were quite possibly the worst team in the state of kentucky 3 or 4 yrs ago. to say he hasnt done a good job seems like jealousy to me but who cares. you are 100% right the 2 transfers from across the river made the team w/out them they are an average 15th region team.
05-08-2014, 07:14 AM
Number one No doubt Lawrence should have TRIED to get Cook to stay. From what I understand they made no attempt to try to get him to stay. On the other side sounds like that Smith is the only coach making the money from what I understand. Talking to some of my friends I heard he makes like double what the girls basketball coach makes. Don't know this to be true but if it is true it could be a title nine issue and that may be why the cuts are coming

The statement of 26,000 cut was not all from coaching. Smith does not earn 20,000 from coaching. That amount included cuts he would lose from his extended days due to his teaching/administration job in addition to what he would lose from his coaching stipend. We will have to wait and see if this indeed is what happens in Martin Co. Time will tell, but some of the coaches are looking at jobs in other counties.

And I debunk your theory that LC was only good because of two kids transferring in. May I remind you that some of these boys have been playing together since they were in 1st grade with the coaching of Tim Parsons. Those being Matt Ratliff, Shawn Moore, Austin Chaffins and Grant Kiser with some other good players that have since quit or moved. They have played in numerous games, tournaments and leagues and brought home many victories and trophies. Tim Parsons had a lot to do with the way this team was shaped. Then in middle school they won the MMSC in the 7th and 8th grade. Richardson was the only added player that moved in. Yes the other two are an awesome addition to the team and well loved but they or no one else is the team. Several of these boys go way back and has had talent and high expectations to go far. Any one who takes this job will fall into a nice situation because not only are these talented boys but a great group of boys as well. Also cook did a good job coaching because before cook there was Miller with no coaching "sense" at all. You can have a lot of talent but if you don't know how to use it then it can fail. Vice versa, have tons of talent and not know how to make it mesh and it won't win. Cook made it work. LC should have tried to keep him. If we can pay the big bucks to the central office people for doing S*** then we could have offered a little bit more to keep a good coach. That is one of the problems about this school system is the administration not caring about anything but themselves. Think about the kids for once. We can pay huge bucks to send the "now gonna be ex super" to earn a useless degree but we couldn't pay extra money to keep a coach or his job that proved he deserved it. Whatever.
05-08-2014, 10:00 AM
MEZZO i totally agree with you. Every school district pays central office big bucks BUT the coaches and teachers are working with the students and players EVERYDAY. If you have a good coach or teacher then you do what you can to keep them IF you want your school to succeed. If Coach Smith wants 20,000 then give it to him and in return you let them know if we are going to pay this then we want some district or regional titles. Lawrence should have done something for Cook.

Martin County has to build a new school or remodel one.
Priorities people!
No one is going to pay Coach Smith locally (Pike, Johnson, Floyd, Lawrence) what he is making in Martin Co.
Question is, do you coach for love of the game or just the money......

i agree with most what you said chaffins richardson and kiser are all nice players, but by no means are they a contender to win the region without the daultons. it does seem like they have some serious issues with the adminstration from the top on down to the AD.
05-09-2014, 11:45 AM
All coaching positions are on a year to year basis, also all eatra service days are year to year. Therefore all coaches and staff that recieve extra days or coaching pay are ,for lack of better word(s)"pink slipped" Some districts send out the letters some dont but it is KDE policy that no extra service contract can be for more than 1 year. All coaches must be rehired on a year to year basis.
05-10-2014, 05:59 AM
You are correct....the biggest concern for everyone that received the "pink slip" or RIF letter is that pay cuts were attached also. This is what has created panic and instability even more so in that county.
05-11-2014, 08:25 PM
you are correct on that the total cuts from his extended days, his summer stipend and cut from his teaching rounded out to $ 26,000.
