Now that Pikeville College doesn't have a head coach, I would like to see the school offer the job to Johnson Central head coach Jim Matney. I can't see him leaving JC as much money as they pay him, but I would love to have him as a coach.
Any thoughts?

Coaches come and go. I know he wouldn't leave, I would just like to have him. If Pikeville offered him more than what JC is paying him he might leave, but that aint gonna happen. But honestly, I don't think he would wanna coach college, he would rather teach kids how to play.

Fill me in--what happened to the coach at Pikeville C. ?

I don't think Coach Matney will leave Johnson Central for at least 5 more years.

Matney loves highschool football and the guy is a winner on and off
the field! If Pikeville college is smart , they will definatley go after this guy and it would be a big step up for Matney in his coaching career. I wont speak for coach, but I wouldn't be surprised if he took the job if it was offered. Neither here nor there, no matter where he stays or goes, the guy will win.

He resigned to persue a better career, and NOT in coaching. He had a great job offer in pharmacy (that's what I heard, but he didn't tell us what kind of job). One thing is for sure, Mynatt did not leave to coach somewhere else.

IMO Jim Matney is one of the top 10 coaches in the state (not just high school); in the next 4-7 years Johnson Centeral will compete if not win the state championship! ANY school should feel privlaged to have a Jim Matney!

Well how many state titles has he won? I would go with Haywood Belfrys coach!

Your right, he hasn't won one...I don't want to turn this into a Heywood, Matney argument, but Matney hasn't had the talent, or coached nearly as many years as Heywood...
Also Heywood isn't "newschool" enough to coach college
02-10-2006, 10:44 AM
yes i would go with belfreys coach

I beleive if offered more money Coach Matney would do it in a heart beat.

NOTHING SPECIFICALLY AGAINST MATNEY OR HAYWOOD (THEY'RE OBVIOUSLY HS FOOTBALL LEGENDS), BUT does anybody here REALLY think a college football program is going to hire a coach with a belly-veer system as simplistic as what's run at JC and Belfry?
What it takes to win in the college game (at ANY level) is a LOTTTTTTT different than what can make for a successful HIGH SCHOOL coach.

i don't think he would johnson central so soon....he is turning the football program back around

I would hate to see that just because we need Matney right now he has taken this broken down program adn made it a regional contender. We have had the talent for 3 or 4 years but we havent had the coach. We really need Matney to stay.

Matney knows how to use the players he has, you think that if he had a QB that could throw for 2,000 yards he wouldn't run an "Air Raid" style offense. Not only that, we got 2 running backs more than capable of rushing for 1,500 yards. Why can't a college team win running a belly-veer, Georgia Southern does it, Georgtown runs alot of the veer, St.Francis runs the veer. This is NAIA we are a talking about, ALOT of NAIA teams are successful running the veer. Jim Matney could coach in the NAIA, and WIN cause he is a winner and a strong, STRONG competitor.

I think the best fit would be Bill Mike Runyon from Paintsville. You talk about getting the most out of player!!!!!!! After a GREAT season at 8-2, District Championship, and Regional Runner Up, and I think I have heard he has 27 years in teaching. He could retire and recieve full retirement benefits, + get the coaching salary on top of that!!:theman:

wont happen

you have to have a string of talent over a few years to really be able to change an offense completely so he has stuck with what works you usually have to have a really really good d that can hold a team under 14 points for a risky o like the air raid o to work and be successfull week in and week out and with the lack of speed in the mountains compared to the rest of the state it is hard to get good burners down the field to throw it up all the time
and lets face it 4-7 and 4-8 40's are not fast for wide outs you can build a good ball control run game with that speed
and as for matney not leaving jc for years i honestly believe that if matney was offered a college job he would take it he is a career coach not a teacher who happens to coach but a coach who happens to teach (a little) with the talent at pikeville college he can out x and o any coach

im not certain if there true or not but after the loss to madison sothern in the first round of the playoffs this year i heard a couple of rumors that matney could leave jc.

Matney could do good in this job. I don't feel as if Haywood's style would work at that level.

He seems to really enjoy the students at JC. He is always talking after games about builing a great program at this school. JC is not a great program yet, but with his guidance, they have a shot!:wieghts:
No one has responded to my idea of BMR. I must be the only one to think he is qualified for the job!

This would be very interesting to me. Even though I don't see it happening.
Isn't he making some serious jack at JC? I wouldn't leave a program that he has basically resurrected. I'd say Matney has his sights set on a State Title, and is dead set on getting it.
Very interesting thoughts indeed. Just don't see it playing out like this.

I would think that if Pikeville was going to go after a High School coach I would think that they would look at Duddly Hylton from bell frist and foremost In my opinion he is by far a better coach then Matney will ever be he has the records and the rings to prove it . And if both these coaches stay were they are they will get to prove my opinion because if Matney is ever going to get that ring I think he will have to out coach Hylton some were in the play offs. And I just dont think he can even with better talent??
