We had some fun with Your Program's Mount Rushmore for individual players/coaches... now let's talk about teams!
Simply put rank the Top 5 TEAMS/SEASONS in your Football Program's History (to the best of your memory)
I will start with my Belfry list:
1. 2004 Class 2A State Champs- Perhaps the best running team in State History. Led by David Jones and Doug Howard the Pirates steam rolled opponents on the ground culminating with a State Finals win over Owensboro Catholic where the Pirates gained 526 rushing yards.
2. 2003 Class 2A State Champs- 2004 gets the edge because ti was essentially the same backfield just a year older. The 2003 Pirates won the school's first ever title defeating an Elizabethtown team that would produce 3 players who would start for SEC programs (Chris Todd- Auburn, Zipp Duncan- UK, Brandon Deaderick- Alabama)
3. 1985 Class 3A Runner Up- A Belfry team who deserved a better fate many think was the best ever. Critical injuries led to an "upset" defeat to Paducah Tilghman 29-14 in a game that still haunts Belfry fans.
4. 2013 Class 3A State Champions- The contrast to the '85 team.. a team who found their identity and overcame odds to bring home the hardware. Injury plagued throughout the year and missing a defensive identity, they got healthy and found their mojo ultimately coming away with a Finals shutout 3-0 over Wayne County. Great Senior leadership, but not the most talented team.
5. 2007 Class 3A Runner Up- The team who was a Championship win away from potentially being labelled the best ever, but instead will forever be remembered for a Finals "flop". Utterly decimated every team in their path en route to the Finals where they were heavily favored against Central. A Pick 6 before the Half and a redzone fumble in the 4th ulitmately relegated them to "What Could Have Been?". Perhaps the most talented team top to bottom/
Honorable Mention:
1989 Semi-Finalist- Lost to Highlands in OT at the 1" Line
2012 Runner Up-A missed XP in regulation ultimately leads to an OT loss
2011 Runner Up- Heavy underdog loses to Central on a perfectly thrown pass with 2:00 to go

Did you forget about any of the teams in the mid 90's? I am sorry but I disagree with the list you have from Belfry. Just because you play for a state championship every year it does not make you one of the best teams to come through Belfry. You have to look at a number of different circumstances to determine what makes a great team.

I agree somtimes there are other teams in that era that make winning past the 2nd, 3rd, 4th round tough. then that team winds up winning state by a million points. belfry's most recent state championship team would get thumped by all previous of belfry's runner ups imo.
But as for Knott's best 5?

Will go with these 5 and hope more Rebel fans contribute.
1. 2000 Boyle County. Most talented team in Rebel history with only 2 close games. (Both vs. Lex Cath and were the only Knights losses of the season) Jeff Duggins (Mr. Football next year), Matt Quinn at RB, Matt Miller at WR and KR, Travis Leffew at Tackle both ways, a young Brodie Overstreet, a sophomore name Jacob Tamme who would be hurt 2/3 of the season. Taylor Begley kicking.
2. 2001 Boyle County. Did not miss a beat. Defense put up even better stats and utterly destroyed an unbeaten Rockastle in the State Final.
3. 2003 Rebels. 15-0. Swept HHS in two games. Most impressive win was vs. Paducah Tighlman in the Western Corner of the state in the AAA semi-finals. PT had Hunter Cantwell and Joe Casey and a host of other talented kids but Boyle dominated the 2nd half to win going away 35-21. Not sure this team was as individually talented as the other two but as a unit they were awesome to watch play together.
4. 2009 Boyle. 15-0. Defense was awesome that season. Two toughest tests came in the semi-finals and state to unbeatens Bell and Lone Oak. RB Rees Mcshara, other backs in Cook and Hester, Lamar Dawson (enough said) and a really good line.
5. 1976 Boyle. ???? Sounds odd. But they went 10-2 and lost a 1 point game to Class A semi-finalist Frankfort (on a late KO return) and by a TD to 10-1 Danville (on a late punt return). Rebels upset powerhouse Harrodsburg (Henry Parks, Gus Parks, Venus Meaux among others) and laid the wood to everyone else. They had 5 shutouts but missed the playoffs on the points system to Somerset. If memory serves, if Boyle had beaten either Danville or Frankfort they would have had enough points to make the playoffs.
I would make cases for any other state title team and I hope some of you will. I would add in the discussion the following:

1975 9-2 (Set a state record for passing yards allowed in a season with a tough line anchored by future Maryland Terp Kyle Lorton)

I'll give it a shot, but that's tougher than it seems. Great question. For PIKEVILLE:
1) 1987 - generally accepted as not only the best Pikeville team in history, but possibly the best team in Kentucky regardless of class that particular year. The start of the 3-peat. Chris McNamee, Robbie Wright, Matt Blair, Greg Hackney and Bobby Deramus, etc. 14 - 0 State Champs, Class A.
2) 1988 - The repeat. Hackney and Deramus back for their senior years, both over 1,000 yards rushing. Defense pitched five shutouts, just like in `87. Mickey Webster, LB, signed with UK. Another undefeated season, 29-0 combined.
3) 1972 - This one might surprise some people, but the team that started it all. At least on a consistent basis. State Runners-Up, Pikeville's first State appearance, first year Hillard Howard was head coach. Led by Chuck Huffman (signed with Nebraska) and Ray Haley (signed with UK). 21 players on team, 15 seniors. Not a lineman over 200 lbs, but pitched five shutouts and the most points given up was 22, twice. Beat Lynch at Lynch in OT in the playoffs.
4) 1989 - State Champs, led by RB Steve Bailey and OL Jeff Roop. Wasn't supposed to repeat, but did. First three-peat, as of that time, in State History. 43 - 1 over those three years.
5) 1978 - State Semi-Finalist. Again, just my opinion, but most talented team to not reach State Finals for Pikeville. Led by Frosty Davis (QB), much underrated RBs Doug Charles and Tim Bergman. Linemen Bob Shurtleff and Mark Littrell (both SEC signees) and defensive standouts like Robert Staggs. Just ran into a buzzsaw in the semi's that year in Somerset and Pete Venable.
Honorable Mention:
1955 - undefeated, voted State Champs by Courier-Journal (no playoffs then)
1964 - another strong team that only lost one game to district foe and eventual state champ Elkhorn City by 6 pts
1979 and 1991 - Class 2A and Class A State Runners-Up, respectively

Good List....hard to disagree with much there. However.....for my money...championship or not...the 1985 team was the best to ever come thru Pond Creek. the 2004 team would run a close 2nd....but defensively...no contest for the 85 squad.
1985 team also had Dwayne Francisco at QB.....who I believe has been the best QB during Haywood's tenure. Sani would be in the mix...but to my memory I cannot remember anyone as smooth on the option as Francisco...

I like this list. However, I'd replace #5 with the 1999 Rebel team. The 99 and 00 teams were not that much different. Two of Boyle County's best teams ever. Great teams to watch.

Belfry had some stout teams in the 90's (moreso the early 90's IMHO)...but they also failed to win a Regional Title during that time and it wasn't like there was a single team who was capable of beating them.
The 1990 team would definitely be in the discussion..but it is hard to quantify their success when other teams I listed proved they could win the big game.
The only team who stood out to me in the "true" Mid 90's was the team who lost to Couch in the Regional Finals (1995 I believe). Nice players, but with all respect nowhere near the Top 10..let alone Top 5. Leslie County was crushed by Highlands and had been crushed by Hopkinsville.
Those early 90's teams were very good...just happened to run into the Ashland buzzsaw. That 1990 team definitely would be Top 10 All-Time, but as I said..hard to give them distinction over teams who won 5 playoff games.

Was trying to figure out a list this morning LiveMaroon. Can't argue with this one for the Panthers. That 87' team was phenomenal in terms of everything you would want in a team as a coaching staff. what can we say about the 88' team, but a repeat of the previous year. Imo, what many overlook in terms of talent, and pure heart is the 72' team. Many times "out numbered", and up against it because of a short roster, they defiantly over achieved by being state semi finalists. Totally agree with this list :Thumbs:

That 84 team did have some very good talent. wish they could have gotten by Beechwood that season. However, the groundwork was being laid for McNamee, Wright, Simpson, Deramus, Honaker, just to name a few, to win it all in 87.

1985 team also had Dwayne Francisco at QB.....who I believe has been the best QB during Haywood's tenure. Sani would be in the mix...but to my memory I cannot remember anyone as smooth on the option as Francisco...
I played against the 85 and 86 Belfry teams. They would get my nod.

Based on overall body of work... Yes.
The 2013 demolished the 3A state champions, Belfry... @ The C.A.M. on senior night. They beat Ironton, OH @ The Tank, they beat Ashland @ Putnam stadium on senior night. Those are three hard places to win at. And JC won at all three.

After asking a few people here is what the majority think at Rockcastle.
2001-went 14-1 lost to boyle in finals
2002-went 13-2 lost ot boyle in finals
2000- went 13-1 lost to highlands in semis (best team i ever saw in HS)(Highlands won state)
2005-went 12-3 lost to lex cath in semi (lex cath won state)
1991-got beat by danville in region(danville won state)
1983-not sure of record but my uncle said they were great that year and would kill me if i didnt put them down. had some good players and got beat by danville in the playoffs

Hard to argue with State Champions but I think the 90 team was better than the 91 Championship team. They were a few inches away from beating Ashland in the Semi's at Ashland. 96 bunch had a heck of a run but I don't think they were top 5. 2004 is underrated team IMO very good football team. If not for the heroics of the Carolina panther's Mitchel they would have won state. It took an injuction for him to play and they later forfieted. He scored all of HHS points and forced 2 costly fumbles, 1 inside the 1 yard line and another inside the 10.

A lot of people say that the 90 team was probably the best team before. Just have to give the nod to the state champion teams for me I guess. We have had so many good teams that its hard to choose from. I thought the 98 team was loaded, but the running back (who's name I can't remember) got hurt late in the season and we lost by 14-13 to Belfry. I believe we missed a conversion attempt.

98 team was very good. Lots of excellent teams in the 90's. If not for the NKY teams thay may have had a few rings. The Playoff's games with Belfry and Breathit were always wars. Luckily we won all but 2 against the Pirates and swep the Holcomb led Bobcats.
Todd Good was the RB. Had an older brother that was a very tough RB as well. :Thumbs:

2010- Could run over anyone. Absolute maulers. Great head coach.
2006- Battlers, started the season 1-5, came back from 17 down in the 4th to beat Danville

Narrowly missed an XP that would have tied the game.
Anyone who ever played at Vipperman Stadium can attest that the uprights on the end by the Band Room weren't exactly 100% straight... not saying the kick would have been good if they were...but the XP couldn't have missed by more than a foot. Great game.
If it is any consolation fate conspired against Belfry the next week when Sheldon Clark pulled a massive upset at Vipperman which was decided by a conversion attempt. That was the infamous Moe Spradlin "crawl" in Overtime when he appeared to be down in the backfield but was given the score that sent the Cards to the Semi's to face Lorenzan and Highlands.

Which Good went 99 yards against Belfry in the playoffs in I believe 96? That was a heartbreaker. Belfry had a stout team and that was a competitive game until that play completely turned the game and Bell went on to win handily.
Great play though..he hurdled the line and was gone.

Belfry upset a loaded Bell team in 95 at Bell on a last second pass, so the Bobcats returned the favor to Belfry the next year at Vipperman.
Sorry about turning this into a Belfry vs. Bell thread but it is brining up a bunch of great games between the 2.
If the current re-alignment had been done right I think we would have had some classics the last couple of years. Maybe again in the future. I have the upmost respect for Coach Haywood and the Belfry faithful.

Steve Bailey was exceptional. Number two behind him in yds. per carry had to be either Greg Hackney, Brent Coleman, or Chase Hall.
