Name your schools Top 5 Rivals
#1
I started a thread similar to this one a few days ago, who is your school' top 5 rivals now and who was your top 5 rivals before the 05-06 realignment. Please include schools that have since consolidated or closed. Should be interesting as most have changed.

Bell Co and Cawood (Tie)

KC and Bville used to be really good because they only played in post-season never played in the regular season then. KC and Rock had some barn burners back before Rock moved to 12th Region. Also, Cawood and KC had a lot of battles over the years before they consolidated into Harlan Co.

For Belfry, it's Mingo Central and Pike Central. Can't even think of two others that are consistently intense or competitive enough to be considered rivalries.
#10
Hazard

1) Perry Central

I don't believe in more than 1 rival!

Jackson County:

1.Clay County.... I also don't believe in more than 1 rivalry, to try and say you have more than that takes away from your 1 true rivalry.

I don't disagree with this at all but it shows differentiation in programs. I'd go as far as to say North is more of a rival to Clay than Jackson. But for Jackson, Clay is probably their rival.

Historically speaking, I would say the biggest rival Pikeville would have is Paintsville. The teams have been playing one another since 1922 - 92 years!! Going into this season they had played each other 150 times with Pikeville holding a 77-73 advantage over the Tigers. I think that is a great rivalry!!

I know a bunch of Pikeville folks that love the rivalry. Two schools with long traditions of success, even in the era of consolidation. Granted Paintsville is still smaller than Pikeville, it is pretty awesome what the two schools have accomplished across the spectrum. I was speaking much more recent history, but I agree with you long term.

The biggest thing standing in the way of Pikeville/Paintsville being one of the best rivalries in the state, as far as all programs go, is Johnson Central. Ask any Tiger fan and they will tell you Johnson Central is the biggest by a wide margin. When you ask Panther fans, there really is no one. In football you have Belfry, that is a no brainer, but Paintsville has been a nice rivalry, even though wins are stacked in the favor of Pikeville over the last 30 years. In basketball, you don't have what I would consider a "great" rivalry, but you have pretty good ones with Shelby Valley and Pike Central, PC not being a district opponent hurts. And like you said, the rivalry with Paintsville is long standing and a lot more balanced than I would have expected. In baseball it is Paintsville without a doubt, IMO. Maybe the Panthers weren't great historically against Paintsville in baseball, but since the mid-80's they have elevated the program to a pretty proud level.

So, we have three sports. Three different rivals. And the common denominator being Paintsville. Everything screams for the two schools to be perfect rivals aside from a small distance factor. Similar size in relation to other regional schools, similar tradition in academics and athletics, both independent school systems, fans are nearly identical in the way they follow the teams. The only problem is Johnson Central. Paintsville is so occupied with the intensity with the Golden Eagles, there isn't enough left in the tank for another one with Pikeville. There is a chance for the Pikeville/Paintsville rivalry to build in the near future though. With Johnson Central off the schedule in football and Pikeville back on and Chirico revitalizing it, if you can get some more contests like the one at Memorial Field in 2013, you may see the other sports spike in intensity as well.

But, as for me: any time a Pikeville schedule comes out, the Tigers are the first team for which I am looking. I love when the Maroon and Blue do battle.

For Cordia it would have to be Knott Central by a wide margin. The schools just don't like each other.
#17
Panther Thunder - I agree with you 100%, for basketball Johnson Central does stand in the way of a true "rivalry" between the Tigers and the Panthers. What I find amazing is not only how many times the two teams have played, but also how many times the two teams have met in the post season and ended each other's seasons!

Knott Central

1. Cordia

However, until Cordia wins a game it's hard to keep up a rivalry.

It'll never be what JBS or LCC vs KCC when I was in school there. Way bigger for Cordia than Knott. There were some GREAT LCC-KCC matchups just a couple of years ago. I miss it. Worst feeling ever was LCC winning district at KCC couple years back.

This may be true to a certain extent. If you was at the game last Tuesday you can't tell me that game didn't mean something to the Knott fans. That place was electric. But I will give you this, until Cordia holds up their end of the rivalry with a win it will always seem this way. Being a Cordia alum I know what beating KCC means to us...I just hope it happens again soon.

100% inaccurate! If a post was removed, then the post number disappears as well, leaving a missing post number. If a post was altered, then it is clearly indicated at the bottom of the post. There is no hidden agenda of Moderators on this site, maybe just an over sensitive member who see's Black Helicopters following him and is worried that aliens are walking among us....

Some of the best in the Lexington area:

Lafayette/Lexington Catholic
Scott Co./Lex. Cath.
Scott Co./Henry Clay
Bryan Station/Henry Clay
Almost any game between two Fayette County Public Schools could be considered a rivalry.
