Who is going to be the new coach at Whitley?
One thing that WC has to overcome is the lack of community support. Corbin and Williamsburg have great support win, lose or draw. It means something to their communities, not that it does not matter to a certain segment of WC but when you go to games at the other schools in the county you see total support from the young and old. At WC games you see a few students, parents and a few people not directly associated with the school or team. In most cases, the people still feel there pride to their communities like Boston, Pleasant View, Woodbine, Rockholds, Poplar Creek, etc. Even when you hear the kids talk you can hear stories of their glory days in basketball or football at their respective elementary schools. At Corbin and Williamsburg, all the kids are in the same school their whole lives and they cultivate that pride in their school. Notice the first part of cultivate.....you almost have to get that type of support...win lose or draw.

That's a problem with almost every county school in the state.
As you said, these kids are spread out over one of the biggest counties land wise in the state. While city schools grow up with each other the entire way, you have county schools who are arch enemies until they come together in middle school and theres always grudges there.
The only way for a county school to get a lot of community support is to win.
any news on weather Robbie Lucas from Somerset is going to take the job?:HitWall:
Today is the day he is to let them know today.
Every school has talent walking the halls. It is getting harder and harder to get that talent on the field or court. Too many other things for them to do. It seems to be more of challenge at the County schools also.
Poverty breeds complacency. You are a product of your environment. Sure there are loads of talent walking the halls, when you figure out how to get them on the field write a book it will be a best seller.

We need to hire a coach that has wrote that book...
At this point a COACH would be progress. LOL
Flika that is correct.

IMO Gibbs would be crazy to take this job! If I where him I would be looking for a job elsewhere. I know he is a Whitley boy but he has given too much time to the program to be overlooked. But I am sure the people in Whitley that matter know how valuable he is, or atleast I hope they do???

I don't think poverty has anything to do with winning at football.Bell County is a poverty stricken area.
If you haven't experienced poverty you wouldn't realize that it does effect about all aspects of your life. just look at the children in little league The ones who have transportation seldom miss practice. The quarterbacks usually come from the child with more access. But, it just a factor.

I've experienced poverty all my life.the poor people might not have much but they are the best people and my favorite people.
Some may be poor in the worldly sense, but very rich spiritually, socially and otherwise. It's all in how you look at it. Maybe this search will just keep on going. It's certainly given us all something to tune in to.
So you guys are taking the generalization out of context and targeting the few that have overcome. The statement is made for the whole. Yes some poor people never know that they are poor because they cope with the hand they were dealt. On the flip side some just run it into the dirt and take anyone down with them. Let me summarize it better this way. You have old school poverty where that group of people were proud and worked their tails off for very little but knew they earned what they had. They instilled hard work and values into their children. Then you have the new school poverty where they think a handout is as good as a hard days work. This carries over to their children and they lose any type of work ethic and those are the ones walking the halls for the most part.

As for Bell county yes they are poor but ask any player what he would be doing if he wasn't playing ball and he would say working, probably in the coal mines and oh yeah they have that secret ingredient called community support and working class pride.

But this is just my opinion.
Poverty and Sports. Next 30 on 30 ESPN. Seriously that's very interesting to think about and would make a good documentary!

I hope he stays but I have a feeling myself that he may be leaving.
I hope its true Lucas come to Whitley...It will be a lot tougher in 5A than it was in 2A....:poker face:

what makes you think so? is it rumored in Somerset?
I have no internal knowledge of lucas leaving but it would make since. Whitley has put together a tremendous package for him with a rumor that he can bring one assistant, which I believe would be Teague. I'm hearing that another assistant has put in for another head coaching position very close to Pulaski County and that another has put in to a county to our north. As I've already stated, I want him to STAY but would understand him leaving for a new challenge.
