Top returning players in 1A.
#1
I will give my opinion on the players from the teams I am most familiar with. You all please do the same.

Raceland: Conner Messer is the biggest offensive returning play maker. At QB, RB, WR, PR, P, DB he is Raceland's utility man. He has the vision and quickness to take any touch to the house at any given time. His health and toughness have been his biggest hickups through out his career, but from year to year that has gotten better and better. It's possible that he could be a 1,000 yard reciever and a 1,000 yard rusher as well, just depends on how many rushes he actually gets. In any regaurd, I expect him to have 1000 recieving, realistically 500 yards rushing, probably a couple hundred passing. So i am expect big things out of Messer.

Not many one and doners at the QB position get alot of talk. But, I think Josh Youg is one to watch at QB. T is likely that it will be somethig like 70/30 60/40 Josh/Conner ratio. Conner runs the wildcat. But Josh has a great arm and great speed. If he keeps his int's down, he could be a 2,000/15+td passer, but he is a bit of a gun slinger so we will have to see. Both of these guys are great DBs as well. Both have the potential to be top 5 WR/QB/DBs in single A next year.

If Pugh can stay healthy, I think Pikeville matches up well with Williamsburg. Raceland will have alot more speed on the line as well, as long as the soph class lineman stay healthy. Williamsburg road is alot tougher, next year. Pikeville, Raceland, and Fairview arehard places to go in and win. Especially in late November. Pikeville is my pick to win the east.

Right now, I see it as a toss up between Pikeville and Williamsburg, to be honest. Pikeville has some holes to fill with the departure of some good leadership on the line due to graduation. Agree, Pugh has got to remain healthy. The kid has what it takes on both sides of the ball, and plays with so much tenacity. However, after saying this, I don't think you can ever count Raceland out, nor Hazard. I think Raceland has a better shot next year though. Don't really know that much about Hazard, but I do know they've got that fine running back returning by the name of Jones.

I think everybody is underselling Hazard. They matched up with Williamsburg much better than Raceland. Jones is back and their quarterback will not be a freshman. I have not seen Pikeville but losing linemen and a running back with 1651 yards means there are some unknowns for them. Andrew Griffith playing next year will ease the loss of Sizemore for Williamsburg. Fairview is a great unknown for next year.

^^ amen to that. Good insight E

We need fresh meat, to get the fresh meat we have developed a hankering for we need Racers of Raceland to step up next year

I'm not going to oversell hazard they are done in 2014 Qb morgan will not have a chris hudson to throw hail mary passes to in 2014...Hazard lost to much on the OL and DL...Brandon jones number will go down Confusedmoke:

Cole brown - rb/lb #11 this kid will lower his head and run over anyone plays hard and has a great nose for the ball on defense

Johny Holyfield - ol/dl #75 great size reached 1000 lb club as a sophomore great potential.

Both players are from Jenkins I know the program is in bad shap but these 2 athletes are really good players

Cody Estepp from Pikeville is a PLAYMAKER. If he was 4 inches taller, a lot more people would be talking about him.

I think Raceland and Williamsburg suffered from the same problem, just in two seperate games. Deer in the headlights of the big or bigger stage+homefield advantage(lets face it, Mayfield's been on Poppa Johns or WKU carpet enough to call it home)+speed they couldnt match. Wburg looses alot more than many think in Sizemore's graduation. Wburg is the favorite but i think the east will be even more competetive next year. How Raceland's line develops will be the key in how far they can go. If the guys stepping up do what ai think they will do, Raceland will suprise some people late in the season after taking a few lumps early on. I see the same thing happening with Pikeville. Even with what both loose+the question marks of leadership and who steps up on the LOS, Raceland and Pikeville are on a collision course to what should be a great Regional Championship on Championship Rd. as are Wburg and Hazard with an outside chance of Fairview in the mix as well. I am interested to see what guys from each team, that no one is talking about yet, step up. Goina be another great year of 1A ball no matter what!

Cody is a very physical DB. But, I wasnt as impressed as I thought I'd be by him. Granted, the mud on Ram Field was pretty thick, which def played in Raceland's favor. Josh Young played him very physically and it seemed to slow him down a little. It could very well be a difference maker on turf though. Can we just go ahead and get the season started?lol

I'm going to add Alex Spencer to that Paintsville list Blackcat Fan.

Agree, Cody is very physical for his size. I don't think we saw the Cody Estep we were accustomed to seeing in that game. The thick mud on the field made the difference imo. He just never got on track. Give Josh Young credit though, he played him more physical than any I had seen all season long.

Young suprises everyone on the defensive side of theball last year. I look for him to have a big senior season on both sides of the ball.

AP all state team tells you all you need to know about Williamsburg. Helton and Wilson 2nd team D line, Patrick honorable mention linebacker and Shelton and Griffith honorable mention receivers. Add little Griffith who is probably the best athlete of the bunch and the Jackets are loaded with returning players.

I agree with you about the above team and players.

What the AP tells me is they are lacking in knowledge. Not one person off the team who man handled them in the championship game made the list.

Got to love #1 Blackcat fan. Blackcats beat 1 team with a winning record. 0-2 against 1A teams. 2 common oppenants with Williamsburg. Jackets 2-0. Blackcats 0-2. There was not a single 1A district in the state that Prestonsburg could have won. Raceland and Fairview would have whipped them. Paintsville would have been a toss up.Those 3 teams would probably compromise their district. Pikeville beat them by 17 in Prestonsburg. Hazard beat them by 10 at their place. Maybe they could play in the district with Beechwood and Frankfort. The Mayfield kids were slighted but the Williamsburg players were deserving. Prestonsburg would be a mediocre 1A team. Williamsburg has some very good returning players. Prestonsburg has been very competitive in 2A over last 10 years but has a losing record against 1A teams during that period.

Did you even read my post before you responded?

I agreed with you on the Williamsburg team and players being recognized. I was simply saying the idiots that voted left off every single player from the team who man handled Williamsburg in the championship. I was not saying anything negative about Williamsburg nor there players. I agreed with you on your statement. Not once did I say the players from Williamsburg was not deserving as I feel they was very deserving. I was simply saying so was several on the Mayfield team who beat the daylights out of them.

The bolded part of your comment makes you look even more foolish.

Your quote was the AP lacks knowledge. Hazard, Williamsburg, Pikeville, Fairview and Raceland were clearly better than Prestonsburg this year. 6th out of 16 in the weak part of the state rings of mediocrity. I try to support teams from eastern Kentucky and find it offensive when someone denigrates these players accomplishments. If you wanted to bash the AP do it in that thread instead of when someone posts these kids made it saying that is proof the AP is idiots. Not a Prestonsburg hater but will call someone out who makes light of kids accomplishments.

You are really way off base here. I have no clue where you came up with your statement that I was offensive to any player. Read my post again very slowly. I said I agreed with you. Was you saying anything negative about the Williamsburg players? NO. Then if I agree with you then I am not. Once again let me try to say this so you understand. I was simply saying Mayfield was slighted in the voting not to have one single player even make honorable mention. You do realize Mayfield was the State Champions, and to not have one single player even make honorable mention in my opinion is foolish. Again for the AP not to vote a single Mayfield player to the team IMO makes them idiots. Not for voting any Williamsburg players or any other team, but for simply not voting on any Mayfield player.

I really hope I explained this enough for you to understand it now.

In case I didn't let me say one more time. I am not complaining about the players who made the team. My gripe is how can you not vote one single kid from the State Championship Team on your All State Team.

Yea Rams, they were misnamed by their founders. With a name like Raceland, Racers seems like a natural fit
