You do realize they lost to the best team they have played in years and Caldwell didn't even make the final four in 2A. Caldwells defense is worse than northern Illinois', if anyone saw that game Friday night. That means it's really bad.
And for that same reason I don't understand all the love for DeSales.
I've seen them ranked as high as 4th and nothing they did throughout the regular season or in the Finals would lead me to believe they are better than any more than 2 other teams, NCC and Williamsburg.

The best team Mayfield played was McCracken Co. Were you at the Caldwell game? There were some issues there. It really didn't matter though. We got what we needed from that game. It's a game of matchups. But really I don't understand how you have so much faith in a team that has played with 1 score of Beechwood for the past 5 years straight. You want to tell how much better your team is than a team that has beaten them 4 years in a row with only 1 being close.

Collins won one game. If they played 100 times, 99 of the games would have a result similar to the 2012 final.
I have seen JC play in the playoffs, and they are anything but a team that plays "macho ball.you" They run the ball a lot, yes, but they run it out of anything from wishbone to shotgun. Belfry would not be able to stop Highlands' passing game. They would have to be ready to cover the deep ball on every play. They are not capable of defending that against a team like Highlands.
Now, if you want my breakdown, it's plain and simple. Teams that have done well against Highlands the past few years have been able to run the ball up the middle. Take Johnson Central and Ashland Blazer, for example. Heck, last year Ashland Blazer kept up for a half by sending their fullback up the middle out of an I formation with three tight ends. Collins was able to utilize that and also had a solid passing game to compliment it.
Remember that Highlands outgained Collins 480 to 458 on the game, with Drew throwing for 367 yards. Collins, to their credit, made the little plays that it takes for a huge underdog to stay in the game and win it in the end. Highlands is 40+ points better, but Collins made it enough of a game to steal it in the end.
Because we are.
I have a job, haha. Maybe if I had that Belfry edumication I might have enough time to make detailed posts on here all day.nicker:
I know the facts. Highlands didn't play well, because of that Highlands got beat. Highlands still has won 6 of the last 7 titles and came 3 points away from winning this one. A lot better than being 3 points away from becoming the Buffalo Bills and losing your fourth straight title game in a row!nicker:

EKU started this thread by stating "This hypothetical is always fun". I wholeheartedly agree.
I looked at strength of schedule, quality wins and bad losses, W-L record, common opponents and scores, Lit ratings, and State Champs or Runner-up.
Here is my list. The top 4, and the bottom 2, were easy in my mind. #5 through #10 were tough. These six teams are very evenly matched IMO.
1. Bowling Green
2. Scott County
3. Collins
4. Highlands
5. DeSales
6. Meade County
7. Mayfield
8. Belfry
9. Wayne County
10. Pulaski County
11. NCC
12. Williamsburg

Every year NewCath makes the finals, and every year people talk about how weak they are. This year they were "easily" one of the two worst. They lost to your #5 team by a touchdown. They were about as even w/ your #5 team as a team could be. Meade County was robbed of the 6A title, and they are #6? They, were at least #4 if not 3.

NewCath should be by far #12.

I have seen years where I thought NCC should be rated higher. This is not 1 of those.

I agree... NewCath has had some very strong teams over the past decade... this was one of their weaker teams to make it to the Finals.

They know this was 1 of their down years. They overachieved this year. That means good things for the future though. This will tend to make them feel stronger than they really are and mentality is a big part of the game.

Yet still, DeSales is in most people's top 5?
IMO and that matters not very much, they were the lesser of all state title teams.
Mayfield, Belfry, Pulaski, and Wayne were all a couple TDs better, while the rest of the bigger schools win convincingly.

Im a mayfield fan but i believe in being honest ive been thinking since about week 3 that desales is the best team in the smallest 3 classes no way to know for sure though dont really know how mayfield desales wayne or belfry would match up i will say with the way mayfields defense was playing they would be a tough out but desales would be the favorite if they were playing imo

It's funny reading all the stuff about NCC from the guys who know nothing about this team. As I stated earlier in the preseason, this was not going to be a team that had a "stud" player, but a team that rally's around one another. Guess what you get when you get a team like that? One that makes it to the finals. Say all you want about how good they aren't. The 6a schools in NKY will tell you different, as well as anyone who played them in the playoffs, including Desales. Wideright has nothing to say about a Highlands team that got there butts kicked, he only bad mouths everyone to deflect a Highlands loss. News flash....the ship is sinking at Highlands and the payback is going to be fun to watch. Its not a matter of coach Mueller being gone, its a matter of the talent has dried up.

Desales beat a John Hardin team that had a nice comeback and was in position to win against Bowling Green. They ran the table in the playoffs and avenged their only loss of the season in convincing fashion. I think Desales was easily a top 10-15 team in the state this season.

Not a very convincing body of work, so they are #11.
Meade County had a 4-3 record against GOOD teams, with a bad loss against Male. IMO, Collins, Highlands, and DeSales deserve a higher ranking than Meade.
