Finally one that I picked right.

Injuries still continue to haunt CovCath. Sam Dressman went out with a possible knee injury.

How do you guys think the Johnson Central/ Cov Cath game will go in a couple weeks?

CovCath is banged up in a big way. I think JC probably beats them even without the injuries, but CovCath would at least make a game of it under normal circumstances. These likely won't be normal.

I would think this would be a frightening result to beat UK's soon to be starting QB this badly. Is the rest of his team that bad? Because as a JC fan, this score looks a little terrifying.

They're hoping to...and that kid is the basket they've put all the eggs in. I recall Andre Woodson wasn't really impressive in HS either (I think Breathitt County beat Woodson's North Hardin team something like 50-0 with him playing)...but still. Is Cov Cath that good, or is Conner that mediocre?

Conner is a mediocre 5A team with one exceptional kid. CovCath is a mediocre 4A team with a lot of injuries.

Fair enough. Only seen him on highlight films, so don't know enough about Barker out here to judge. Guess we'll find out about CCH in two weeks in person.

I have watched him in person two times and was not very impressed. I would be shocked if he does much at UK.
COV CATH looked terrible in the game I saw against HHS. They had/have a ton of injuries, but even with everybody healthy I do not see them beating JC. It was the most out of shape CCH team I have seen since following them closely from the 80's.

If theres ever anyone to give credit to, its hop.
As ive said several times, simply off of what ive read and heard, hype doesnt win games, and this kid was signed way to early!
I know this doesnt make a difference when its a team game, but Cov Cath is just not a very strong team this year, and if they shut him down, that theory is proven.
Kuntz and Houliston are better.

Thank you Gut. In this world I've figured out a few things. Money talks. (see Zeke Pike) You can kiss all the booty you can at EVERY camp, but sometimes you have line up and PLAY THE GAME. I won't touch the attitude part, there will be numerous witnesses in the stands and on TV.

I saw him play last year and this year IMO opinion he's nothing more than a frame with a decent arm. Coaches see him toss a few 60-70 yarder sand the fact that he's 6'5" 190-210 and they figure we'll give him a shot. He's got the size if a pro Style QB
He has not played to the hype that he had coming in. No way he is MR Ky off anything unless it's Hype. I wouldn't blame all of his performance on him though as he lacks the weapons other schools would be able to offer him. Also IMO lacks a quality coach for QBs,
I am interested to see how spring ball at Uk goes. That will determine if he ends up a Pike or a Couch, Lorenzen or Woodson.

I think Barker deserves a little more credit than what he's getting from most of you all.
Imagine if he played on a team like Highlands. Would you be calling him overrated then? Probably not.
Fact of the matter is, he plays on a average team and without him, Conner probably ends up losing to Campbell County, Ryle, Cooper, and maybe even Scott, if not more. He literally carries his team on his back each game.
Time will tell.

You mean the qb coach that worked with Hempel, Bir, and West? Barkers throwing motion and understanding of defenses doesn't just happen.

If you have been watching the news Hempel has played very well this season. The other two...........
His throwing motion isn't terrible and could easily be fixed.. His DM isn't there but most High School QBs don't have it anyway. (Thus what college coaching is for) but also I would take almost any other NKY 5a or 6a teams recievers over Conners.. Harsh but true. Last year he had a lot better weapons. My biggest problem with Barker is his inconsistency game to game and even play to play.
IMO he will get his chance at UK. A good QB coach will be able I work with him and we will see in 2 years how he turns out. I'd like to see him turn out good because I don't want NKY to be known as the land of big school bust (You know the list).
The jury is still out on Towles but I still wonder if he transfers if Barker ends up taking a depth spot above him.
11-03-2013, 11:44 AM
I also still think if Kuntz can win state or at least make it there he will get a bigger FBS school knocking at his door and will be able to immediately translate into the college game.
Barker is a frame, and he needs work..raw materials are there but the question remains if they can mold him into the QB they tell us he is.

His throwing motion is awesome and like I have posted before, Coach Watson from UL and Coach Magnus from South Carolina said it is one of the best throwing motions and releases they have ever seen. But you have said things about his throwing motion before. I would really like to hear what is wrong with the motion.
His understanding of defenses is extremely good he understands coverages, recognizes fronts, blitzes even when teams try to roll coverages(which almost no qb ever sees in high school let alone recognizes it) and changes plays at the line of scrimmage.
Trent Dilfer, told Mr. Hempel, that Barkers football IQ is unbelievable and is something that impressed him along with his physical skills. Which is why Drew changes a lot of plays based on what the defense shows, according to interviews from his HC.
I think the inconsistency, which there is not a lot of IMO, is to how the wr match up with the other teams dbs and his mind and ability to process is faster than the wr skill level causing him to "wait" at times for things to develop. With Fogle last year he had a high level wr that teams had a hard time matching up with and a much better line. Watching Bonnafon from Trinity and his situation it is similar. Last years Trinity qb put up better numbers than Reggie but had a lot more talent around him and Reggie is the better qb. The game the other night in the Pit at Elder you could see how the WR-DB match up is critical to the succes of the qb.
I cannot figure out the Towles situation. Only thing I have heard was that he could not recognize defenses very well and then process that into the play going full speed. But that is only what I heard. I think that at HHS the qb is told who to throw it too because the coach thinks his athletes will just make the play on the ball. That is how Coach Mueller describes it, but he could just be "talking." Or it could be throw to this guy if he is open, if he isn't throw to this guy type of thing. Now, Towles throwing motion is something that needs worked on IMO.
I do not think Towles will transfer, of course that is just a guess. For him to work as hard as he did at HHS, where they work a lot, tells me that he will not shy away from the challenge or back down.
qb
As far as the big school bust I can only think of one.

Has Conner played a decent game since they played SK? It just seems that they have been pretty mediocre since that game. Barker looked all world in that game, but since, he seems to be no where to be found. Seen him at the UK games we have been to. Could his mind be elsewhere?

All these people commenting are from NKY and have seen him play on more than one occasion. And Drew if Barker is 6'5" Kuntz is 6'4.5", which he is not. A lot of people on here said he wouldn't have the year he had last year. Cameron Fogle was a dynamic high school football.

I agree with most of that which is why I said above the bad DM could be because of his poor recievers... Also he hasn't done extremely well on those "great reads" he would of thrown 6 ints vs Ryle's terrible secondary if the D-Backs would of caught the ball and 3 against SK.
It is true his ability to understand defenses in the classroom is exceptional but the game is where it matters. As I recall everyone loved Pikes IQ as well but he also didn't have the best senior season.
Also his throwing motion in the game is what I was concerned about when he's in the pocket it's inconsistency. He tends to look like an all-American one play and then 2 or 3 later goes away from the fundamentals. Not terrible but easily corrected and had gotten better as year has gone on. Repetition is the quick fix.
I stand by what I said before he has the materials I haven't seen them put together.
Mr. Kentucky should be between Fant & Kuntz
If Barker can pull a miracle run and put it together in the playoffs maybe he is put up there but right now I don't see it.

Boone 8/11 235 4 td
Grant County he threw 16/19 341 4tds (it's grant county though)
Holy Cross 17/26 288 7 Tds (please there JV team would of beat them)
Scott 22/30 296 3 Tds (his best game he played top knotch here)
SK 27/44 344 4 Tds (should be noted SK's backs dropped some candy in this one)
The bad
Ryle 23/33 240 0 Tds 2 ints (should of been 6 ints)
South Oldham 24/41 271 yds 2 Tds 2 ints

IMO Conner gets knocked out of the playoffs in the 2nd round by Anderson Co. and Barker doesn't get Mr. Football. Oh yeah and the Conner P.A. announcer looks like a total D-Bag for calling Drew "the new Mr. Football". nicker:
11-03-2013, 02:04 PM
Barker threw 57 yards and ran 47. Barker looks about 6'2 225. I thought he was fast till he played SK and he is very slow! UK will be disappointed! Daddy is the PA Announcer lol.
