Grade School Ball And Their Coaches!!!!
#1
Why do some schools have coaches that only play 5 players no matter what? I watched a game last night at Johnson Central High School between WR Castle and Central Elementary. It was a good game but WR's coach would not sub at all. They ended up losing by 8 points.I heard WR's coach was a real humdinger and He only plays certian kids that he likes and when he holds practice he only practices 6 and lets the other 11 kids sit in the bleachers!!! If this is true I think the coach got what he deserved. It's a shame that stuff like this takes place at such a low level of play. Why not give every kid a opportunity to play and maybe they will develop into something special. If they don't they can always sit the bench then!!! :boosign:

I can remember grade school ball. One kid had the ball, and it was 9 others going for it.
When I played in 3rd-5th, it seemed like everyone got to play. It wasn't all that important at the time. But things have changed.
#4
I live in that area and I have seen it happening at wr as well they should have won that game last night and the way the coach throws his fits in the public eye he should be fired plus they are supposed to be there for the kids and not their own glory he is supposed to be an example for the kids to look up to but how can u look up to someone when all they do is put u down and yell at u and about the practices he needs to find another hobby if he is going to treat helpless little kids like that he is nothing but a henderance to the kids and to the school system!!!:coach:
#5
I am a ballmom and I would be furious if I found out that I had made it a point to take my kid to practice and drive to all the games and the coach wasn't even practicing my kid.Obviously other parents don't know or they would have put this coach out on his head. You would think the principal of that school would want better representation than that. You said wr lost last night,a team is only the reflection of their coaching

I know Randy Davis is a GREAT young coach at Dorton. A young coach who knows the game and a great teacher of the game!

I Went Through The Same Thing When My Child Was In Grade School. It Is Heartbreaking To See Kids Go From Loving The Game Of Basketball To Not Even Caring If They Get To Play. There Comes A Time When The Child Blames Themself For Not Getting To Play. It Is Not A Self-esteem Booster Thats For Sure! As Far As The Coach Is Concerned, If He Is Not Even Letting The Kids Practice Then He Should Be Replaced. After All He Is Getting Paid To Coach!!!!

You witnessed what has been going on in that county for decades! Those guys pick out what is supposed to be the next superstar at the highschool level while they are in the 4th thru 5th grade. And all they do is work with those kids. They look at the others and say that he or she is not going to do much more after grade school. This IMO this is so wrong, when alot of kids don't start to really develope untill they hit Highschool. So alot of kids are pushed out or they transfer. Which IMO is why the cross creek rivals do as good as they do. They welcome these kids with open arms, take them in and develope them. That is why they are always very tough year in and year out in the district and region.
Maybe they need to take a page out of Paintsville's Book. They have a Jr. Pro league which is made up of a total of 14 teams. 8 teams of 5 yrs to 8 yrs and 6 teams of 9 yrs to 12 yrs. Every Kid on the team must sit out one whole quarter and every kid on the team must play at least one whole quarter without coming out. Their MOTO is "where furtue Tigers are made".
Maybe all these schools in the county and surrounding counties ought to try something like this. I know most of them all have an "A", "B" and "C" team. Maybe only put ten or eleven players on each team at time and every player has to sit and play at least one quarter. This wil develope alot more kids and also make the coaches have to use alittle strategy!:High5:

First off Kevin Conley, the coach at WR is one of the nicest people on earth. Its not fair to bash him just because your son is not good enough to get a lot of playing time.

Secondly, whatever happened to earning playing time. We sit our kids up for failure when we dont give the PT to the best players. I can remember when not every one made the team. You had to tryout, and if you were not any good you did not make the team and had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!

I agree that winning is not the only thing, but if your team would have won this would not even be a thread.
#12
Well to start with, this is the time to teach these young kids, and they should all get to play, doesnt matter how good they are, because this is were they get better.

Quote:Secondly, whatever happened to earning playing time. We sit our kids up for failure when we dont give the PT to the best players.

Now that is a good statement, you sit the kids up for failure when you dont give them all playing time, no matter how goood they are or how bad they are, these kids are there for fun and to learn not to be sit on the bench because the coach thinks he/she has to win to make themselves look good.

And no you shouldnt have to try for grade school ball, all tha come out should get the chance to play and have fun.

We wonder why that kids are the way they are, what are we teaching them when as coaches we show them that only the good "Players" get anything!

Is this league open to kids who attend the Johnson County schools- or is this for Paintsville students only?

If it is open to them-- they need to participate. What happened to the buddy basketball league that Johnson County used to have? I believe that these programs are where you learn the game. I know there are children who participate in the Jr Pro and pee wee programs they all pay the registration fee and they all get to play. I don't think school ball is the place for that. You earn your spot on the team and you earn your playing time. I know children who have played on the Jr Pro teams from age 5. These kids gave up their Saturday's to learn the game- instead of sleeping in or playing video games and watching cartoons. I've seen boys and girls alike spend all day sitting in the stands watching games- just hoping that one of the other teams would be short a player that day and they would be asked to play. The love of basketball was their motivation. When the other kids are old enough to play school ball-- all of a sudden they want to be a part of it. By that time- most of them are so far behind its just about impossible to catch up. There are few athletes who can start then and make a go of it.

Also, the coach who plays the same 5 players while winning a game 20 points- needs to have some compassion for those players who don't see significant playing time.

I cant believe Batpuff disagees with me, wow thats a shocker.

You said we wonder why kids are the way they are. Do you think maybe the parents have a little something to do with that.

Whats wrong with showing kids that only the good players should play. Whats wrong with teaching our kids that hard work pays off and that if you are good at something you can excell, but if you are not gifted in a certain area, maybe you should use the talents the good Lord gave you. For example, I have always wanted to play the guitar but i am not blessed in that area, therefore, i had to learn to deal with that.

And I am just wondering what effect it has on our kids when they go to a game and see parents yelling and screaming at the refs. Not only parents but, I dont know, maybe elected county officals acting completely out of control. Just wondering what effect that has. But its easier to always blame the coach or the refs....Its never the kids or the parents fault

Just wondering if you actually have kids or is he/she the one that gets the "special" treatment? You have got to be kidding me about earning playing time!!
If a child goes to every practice, they give up their time and energy to that coach, they run the suicides and sit the wall until they are in pain, THEY HAVE THEN EARNED THE RIGHT TO PLAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When a child suffers with their team for the love of the game it shouldn't all be in vain. I don't care if the child has two left feet, they are entitled to be coached. These are just kids! Let them worry about the team cuts when they get to middle school and high school.Kids need to learn how to find their own niche in life. We have enough problems in this world without teachers, coaches, and parents discouraging our children. A child will never live up to it's fullest potential if they are always being told that they just aren't good enough. :Shaking:

Seems as if this thread is getting off track a bit i thought it was about kids playing time not about the refs(again)Rolleyes

We are fortunate at our school to have a nice winter league program where every kid who wanted to in the county could sign up to play. These kids got to play each and every game, not one kid had to sit out a game, because they were required a certain amount of playing time. Now for some of these kids thats the only time they ever play ball because they know they are not good enough to see playing time on the school team.(kids are more aware of their talents and limitations than parents give them credit for) So it fills a void from not being on the school team yet they still play the game they love. Now for schools who don't have these type of programs i might suggest trying to start one, the kids love it and they get to make friends from all over the county.
And i know this is not going to be a popular opinion to everyone but i do think they should have try outs, not to actually cut kids completely from teams but to make A, B or C team, as halfstep mentioned (similiar to HS varsity and JV) This will give kids the opportunity to play and develop without their self esteem being shot down and having to miss out on something they love doing. And with the practice maybe the next year they can move up to a better team.Just my opinions from having kids in ball for 15 years and remembering how i felt when i played many many years ago.:thanks:

It's grade school. It should be all about fun. Everyone should get to play. It's truly a shame that things happen this way.

You can't tell me, that in Elem. that 5 players have earned the right to start and play the whole game. That is ridiculous. I can see them getting the majority of playing time, but not all.

oops i thought it was a middle school game...how old were the kids playing?

Its not fair to bash Kevin Conley but it is fair to bash a young boy you don't know?Being good enough has nothing to do with it it is all in your last name whether or not you get playing time and everyone knows that.It just depends on who the coach is afraid of more and besides that being one of the nicest people on earth doesn't make you a basket ball coach it makes you one of the nicest people on earth.

I don't care if you agree or disagree with me. Grade school is not a place to set a kid up for failure or to break there heart because they did'nt get into the game. Then when the kid comes home and the kid is crying his/her eyes out because they dint get to play in the game. Grade school is not about winning or losing, its about teaching them the game, teaching them that its not about winning or losing but about making friends and having fun.

There is nothing wrong with showing them that hard work payes off, but they are in grade school, not High School or College. I bet you dont even have kids, because if you did you would know that its about them having fun and getting a chance to play and learn not who is the coaches pick or we are going to win a league championship.

And I think we had this talk not to long ago about you tring to reveal another members ID and to be honest with you I have had about enough of you trying to reveal who I am. and again for your information welll thats ok jusk think I am the County Judge. Thats fine.

Not to start another 30 page debate on holdbacks, but if you really looked at what is occurring in Johnson County and other schools, the five starters tend to be holdbacks at least some of them if not all. I have known coaches that personally didn't play players to put pressure on their parents to hold them back. Giving the excuse that they are not ready. And with the way things have changed at the elem/mid school levels I would say they are right. This level more so than others is dominated by maturity.........not talent. That is why in high school it does seem to even up, because the maturity of the players improve.

I have been coaching in the elementary schools for a few years now and I don't think we ever have taken just one kid and tried to make them a superstar. And there have been a few that we could have and I don't ever remember any grade school coach doing that. I guess you would take a loss and play all your kids than to teach them about the sport. I don't think if you were the cheerleading coach you would let everyone cheer if that would cost you a title. I know for a fact that I worked with every kid no matter how good or bad they were and everyone got to play at the c team level and most at the b team level. I can't think of kids that did not get to play and then transfer across the creek and get to play. I can think of a few that they have persuaded to come across the creek, promise them the world and then they don't even get to play. Then they try to come back to the other side of the creek and they won't release them to play. So the point of that is they try to get as many as they can and then won't play them. Give me an example of someone who did not get to play at the grade school level and get developed some where else. I don't think we will use that page out of Paintsville's book. So what do you consider the pee wee division in basketball, football, and baseball. I think the same rules apply to Jr. pro! What about buddy ball. Are you telling me that in Paintsville's leagues that no one is considered a superstar and promised the world? And that they don't watch to see who the next superstar at the high school level? I don't disagree with the programs that give a chance for these kids but you need to get some facts straight before you argue about something. So what you are saying is have a try out for the grade schools and keep only those who are good enough, cut those that are not, and only keep 10 or 11. That would really cure the problem until the parents come crashing down on you for cutting their kids. How will that allow a kid to develop if you cut them? I think some kids won't hit their full ability for a few years but most good coaches can tell if the have any talent. So the Jr. pro coaches don't try to win their games? I don't think so! I have watched a few of those games.

It is simple little things like this that lead up to things like the columbine shootings, kids are made to feel like they don't belong and then they try to prove their points by doing something drastic. Our educational system and staff is supposed to make EVERY child feel as if they belong to something whether it be basketball or the chess club.I hope that the boys under this coach are not taking it to heart or letting it mold who they think they are.How sad that someone would be blessed enougn to get to work with this age group where they are so willing to learn and looking for someone to be a role model and they just abuse it.

Halfstep,

Again you show just how little that you know about what goes on. Seems like all you , your, wife , your daughter, want to do is get on here and bash the cheer leading coach, the Johnson Co. School System, the basketball coach, the janitors , the cooks, or just whoever. I know for a fact that everyone involved in this school system has been nothing but good to you and your family for years. Like I mentioned to you the other day, if the grass is greener on the other side of the creek, then maybe that is where you need to take your other one . If you think that you have a couple of superstars then I certainly wouldn't waste my time playing straddle the fence. Take them and go, I'm tired of listening to you gripe about every one and every thing. I noticed that you failed to mention in your attempt to glorify Paintsville's youth baketball program that none of the elementary schools cut any kid that desires to play no matter what the talent level. Every kid gets an opportunity. And you also failed to mention that every elementary school in the county has their own pee wee leagues for kids aged K through 3rd grade, and you also failed to mention the Johnson Co. Buddy Ball League that is open to every one as well. You even failed to mention that some schools in the county also have a junior pro league as well as AAU team.I dont know what your objective is, but most of us in the County school system is tired of listening to your garbage. Again I will say take your other one and go if it's that bad. You certainly have no reason to complain about anything!!!!!

And in defense of Kevin Conley. He is a wonderful person and a good coach. The year end tournament was being played and he played exactly the number of players that needed to be playing in this game considering the stakes involved. Most regular season games in Johnson Co. involve one, and sometimes two C team games, one B team game and of course the A team game. Every kid on every night that a game is played gets a chance to play. All of these kids have had plenty of playing time the entire year. He is a very fair individual and is in it only for the kids as he has none of his own involved.

Sheesh!!!!!

first of all u must be very good friends with the coach to think he has done a good job how do u explain going from first place in the county to third place after the middle of the season it just dont happen if u are even a average coach in as little games as they are in county basketball or are u one of those people who buddy up to coaches to get them on your side for your kids sake or do u even have kids u cant explain going from first to third in that short of a time so in all reality u aint worth discussing this matter with .Confusederved:

man you are too funny, you take this stuff way to serious!

Maybe if people took it half as serious as the boys playing do we wouldn't even be talking about this right now.
