Greenup County 60 West Carter 35
#1
final
#2
Nice job G.C.
#3
Greenup Co. scored 60 points.... either they've gotten way better since last season or West Carter is the worst football team in the United States.
#4
West Carter was up 2. TDs at halftime. Brown got hurt in the second half and Byrd went nuts for Greenup with over 400 yards rushing.
#5
Byrd with 447 yds rushing 4 TDs
#6
447!!! Wow!
#7
Evidently Greenup kept the starters in on offense till the final seconds trying to get Byrd the record. That's pretty bush league.
#8
I generally distain keeping people in to pad stats. Imo it cheapons records or stats. Outside of a QB or RB taking a loss to get a kicker and shot at a record, but in that case, come on, its a kicker, but i digress. I am almost always against leaving starters in, but these kids have been beaten up for a long time. They deserve a lopsided win. Especially being down 2 scores at the half. Coach Mullins has got these kids believing and i a few years they will be a 500+ team once again.

I love it!
Let him break all the records. They were made to be broken!
If you cant stop it, get better or quit.

They did that as well 3 or so years ago with the one RB they had. Would keep him in entire game when way ahead.

Bush league.

Karma is a bitch and they still have JOhnson Central and Ashland Blazer to play.

Does anyone know the extent of injury to Brown kid? He would be a huge loss. Hope he is back Friday.

Greenup beats West Carter

Matt Sparks The Independent

LLOYD — Ryan Byrd’s rushing performance left Musketeer fans breathless on Friday night at Greenup County High School.

It also left himself gasping for breath as the sophomore sprinted on long touchdown runs of 84, 57, 40 and 33 yards.

Byrd rushed for a career-high 447 yards as Greenup County ran past West Carter 60-35.

"He played phenomenal," Greenup County coach Chris Mullins said. "He has great field vision. Our offensive line did a great job. We were down to our third string center and tackle. They did a great job of stepping up."

West Carter coach Kevin Brown was equally impressed.

“He is a great running back,” Brown said. “He was running hard all the way to the end and hats off to him.

"Give credit to coach Mullins and Greenup," he continued. "They did a great job and executed their game plan."

West Carter (2-2) took advantage of several Muskeeteer miscues on special teams in the opening half.

With the score tied at 14, Dallen Dean ran back the kickoff untouched for an 82-yard touchdown for the Comets.

Greenup County was forced to punt on its next possession but mishandled the snap and West Carter recovered.

Seven plays later, quarterback Braden Brown outran the Musketeers to the corner of the end zone for a 3-yard score to give the Comets a 29-14 halftime lead.

Mullins was proud of the way his young team handled the adversity and just kept fighting.

"Our defense really hung in there," Mullins said. "They were getting a little down so we made some adjustments at halftime. They really bought in."

For all the momentum that West Carter gained at the end of the first half, it quickly disappeared after halftime.

On Greenup County’s first play of the second half, Byrd raced down the sideline for a 57-yard touchdown.

The play was even more tragic for the Comets because Braden Brown turned an ankle trying to chase down the Musketeers’ speedy running back. He had to sit for the remainder of the game.

Brown finished with 122 yards on eight carries, all coming in the first half.

"He is our leader on offense even though he is just a sophomore," Brown said. "It kind of limited us offensively when that happened."

When Byrd needed a breather, teammate Kenton Boggs more than picked up the slack. He had 67 second-half rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Mullins knows a win like this would give everyone involved a much-needed lift.

"You can't talk enough what that means to the fans and players,” he said. “Everyone is hungry for this program to get turned around."

Great job! They needed and the fans needed a win like this. Last year in the last five games there might have been at the most 20 people at a game. Now you have got to get there early to get a seat. I have never seen so many fans go to the away games also.
#15
The best 2nd half comeback i've ever seen . great game Greenup..
#16
I think after last night Byrd has 883 yards after 5 games.
#17
Byrd is a stud. If they can get their defense situated and their line play a bit better, they will be a tough out in a few years. Imo i use a few more traps, stretches, etc. against bigger teams neway. Against Raceland, the coukdhave used more pulls and traps instead of back misdirection. Raceland still would have beaten them, but it would have made for more success running the ball.

There were games at the end of last season i could go in and sit midway up on the 50 yard line, stretch out and have no one within 5 feet of me. Friday, right before gametime, they had both ticket booths going with people lined up 20 or so deep to get in. Nice to see some excitement about football.

Byrd really has emerged as a go to back. With senior Jeffrey Williams injuries and him pretty much not being able to go now (was in sweats on the sideline this week), someone needed to emerge and he has really done it. The Williams issue is a shame because he was really a quality back in this area and is a really good kid. He put up several huge games over the past two years and came into this year expected to be the team leader on offense and defense. It just never happened. It hasn't been discussed much but without him, i thought it would really hurt Greenup County and honestly i questioned really what they could do without him. I was wrong and the team has really made progress and gets better week to week. They will still struggle with the Ashlands and Johnson Centrals, but they have a pretty good shot in their other 3 games remaining.

Greenup gets a week off then back at it Oct. 4 Rowan Co.

Not sure about how Ashland will do anything, but itd be the perfect oppertunity for JC to get some kids in the record books. If they can rush for 800 yards, they should do it. There is nothing wrong with running up the score or breaking records. If you cant stop it, quit or get better. Theres already a mercy rule in effect.
I dont want to hear about sportsmanship either, nobody cares, if my team got beat by 80, id put it on our team, not the other, and id say congrats to them. If it was that big a deal than the BCS wouldnt exist. Ohio State put up almost 80 points today and i dont blame them. They beat Buffalo by two or three tds and dropped by 2 or 3 spots in the rankings.

Score early, score often, and give the kids some to remember. Put there names in the record book.

Congrats Greenup County. Sadly though, I know Matney, and I love the guy, and hes liable to set all kinds of records against you.

Greenup County already had their 2nd and 3rd team defenses playing in the game on that side of the ball. When they got the ball with a minute and a half left in the game, that's the short period they kept him in realizing he had a shot at the record. With all the long runs he had in the 2nd half, the possibility of setting the record came up i'm sure late and suddenly. This was a close game at the start of the 4th quarter (Greenup was up 1 point). It wasn't like they were up 20-25 going into the 4th and left their starters in the remainder of the game. He chose to go with his starters that last little bit. And remember, he was also giving the ball to Boggs who had a couple of 2nd half TD's and 70 yards, so it wasn't like it was all Byrd, all the time.

That last minut and a half is what makes it bush league. Had Ivan McGlone wanted to do it Josh Gross and Kasey Clark would probably be one and two in almost every rushing category in the Khsaa record book.

I'm glad GC has turned things around. But this is a mistake by a hung coach. You can't make an argument otherwise.
