HDE Wrote:Belfry did have some regional championships in the 60s. They beat Evarts (a Harlan County team) two or three times during that era but lost in the semifinals.Didn't the KY playoff system start in 1959? Some regional championships in the 60s would be pretty decent.
Harlan County did OK back then though. Besides Evarts' three district titles, Lynch won four state championships and finished second four times.
Cumberland made it to the state finals three times in the 1980s.
Cawood won the region in 1975 (they beat Belfry in the regional finals).
Harlan County won a few games/championships in the old days, too.
Harlan County collectively has some strong football history. Lynch East Main is one of the best stories ever, what they did was nothing short of a dynasty and would make a good movie. Those Cumberland teams you mention were fantastic and I remember a couple of epic battles with Belfry during those years. Evarts and Cawood also have a rich history and as you mention, were not unfamiliar with the Pirates.
In a sense, this is not the first introduction between these two fan bases, but it is going to be a completely different animal. I can't wait to see the new stadium and I think this will be a premier matchup for many years to come.

is that Coach Haywood can still talk about them getting better each week and by the end of the season all of the Belfry fans will think they are as good as HC.
I wish Belfry would slot this game for senior night next year!
We're scheduled to beat Johnson Central on that night, dude. Sorry. Yearly "last game of the year" matchup for 7 years now. Obviously we must get a little better since we lost to Henry Clay and Ashland then held Central to its lowest point total all year at state (less than St X allowed) ...

Lynch had the coldest football field in history!! I vividly remember my brother's senior year, and my daddy taking a Coleman lantern to the game with us. We lit that sucker and put it under a quilt, so we wouldn't freeze to death.
It was snowing blue snow that night!!!

So, by that reasoning, wouldn't that still put Pike County ahead of Harlan County. Since we are going off schools in the county. Belfry and Pikeville has done well. If Belfry were to consolidate with say Pikeville and Pike Central to get to the 1700+ kid count, I wonder how that game would play out? Just saying. And for the record, I think Harlan County has done exceptional in it's short time as a consolidated school. Wish them nothing but the best.

Harlan Black Bears win big!! Close for a half, MAYBE!!!! HC to BIG, FAST, and way to STRONG! Belfry has never seen defense like they are going to see Friday, past, present, or furture!! Much respect to Belfry and a long storied program with an outstanding coach! However, to much talent and speed on this side of the mountain for them to compete with Harlan Black Bears. Black Bears remain "KING OF THE MOUTAINS" after this Friday night!

With all due respect to the Belfry Pirates, I have to pick my Black Bears to win Friday night. I think it will be the closest game we have all year! Our o-line is dominating and that will be one of the differences in the game. As for our defense, we don't call them filthy animals for nothing. Go Black Bears!!!
Best of luck to the Pirates the rest of the season, win or lose! You have a great team and the Black Bear Nation has the utmost respect for you.

Number one - there would be no logical reason to consolidate those two schools.
Number two - doesn't Belfry turn kids away to prevent from moving up in class anyway?

Cross Whitesburg mountain and follow your nose; no more turns after that. You will see Harlan County High School on your right about 16 miles from Cumberland. The football field is just across the river.

HC is the "King of the Mountains"! HC has nothing to prove to Belfry or any other mountain school. LINE'EM UP, WE WILL KNOCK'EM DOWN ONE BY ONE!!! Belfry just happens to be next.

WEAK UP FRONT???? Obviously you are about 5 yrs old and just dont know no better or you have never seen us play! I'll be sure to tell our D-Line what you said though, see ya Friday, maybe, not sure you go to games after that comment!!

Some posters, not all, seem to be underestimating The Pirates. I watched film of your filthy animal defense and I still say you are not faster than the central defenses we have faced in state. THIS WILL NOT BE A BLOWOUT. Even some of your fans thinks so. As for King of the Mountains. Belfry has played in numerous state championships in recent years. You all none since your existence. I'm not saying Belfry is the King but Harlan Co. Is far from it also. The so called self proclaimed King of the Mountain teams do not play each other enough to say who is the outright King.

I believe Bell County coined the phrase "King of the Mountains". That phrase means about as much to me now, as it did then.
Belfry has a long rich tradition that for which they are rightly proud. Harlan County hasn't had the time to be as successful, being only recently consolidated.
This is one loyal and dedicated Black Bear fan that firmly believes we'll pull the victory out on Friday night...that being said, there are no blow outs predicted by me on either side.
This is gonna be a slobber knocker, and I cannot wait.
Perfect weather, perfect tail gate food, perfect game, perfect STORM!!!!!
Go Black Bears!!!

Correct!
Bell is the self-proclaimed "King of the Mountains" despite the fact they never played Belfry during their run, only won a single State Title and reached a single State Final during that run, finished behind Belfry in the Final Mountain Top 10 all but maybe 2-3 years, and did I ention they never played Belfry during that run
"King of the Mountains" is a pointless title in more ways than one. If more EKY teams were more concernedabout winning a ring, rather than focusing on a mythical claim, then Mountain Football would probably be a lot tougher.
For all those self proclaimed titles Bell County has (once again..when they never played Belfry) what do they have to show for it in their trophy case?

Please tell em, i think what he means is you D-line is smaller than our O-line....yes your O-line is bigger than our D-line, With the exception of Barnes, From what i have seen, is we match up about the same at all positions....now your best player is #35, tough as nails and loves contact...i can't wait to see him and our #5 meet up the middle...Your best athlete is #2 very fast but doesn't seem that physical so the question is can he take a hit like he is gonna feel on Friday...this is just my opinion but the story will be told Friday...

Belfry is a county school, not an independent. Can't turn kids away.
