Belfry Middle School
#1
Whats everyones opinions on the basketball season and how it has went this year?

I think they have done way below expectations, 4 schools combined plus transfers from Phelps, Matewan, Johns Creek, and Williamson and they can't even challenge Virgie and Dorton who have destroyed them both times. I think they have only won 5-8 games.

I also feel their "coach" does not act professional at all :ChairHit:, but we all know how that goes. He has his sights set on the HS job from what I hear but he can't even compete at this level?

Is there a change needed, the 7th grade is winning as is the 6th, why not the 8th?

I hear hes gone?

Virgie and Dorton are the top two middle school teams in the state, arguably.

Wait until you see the county championship banner in BMS next year before judging. And yes, I am confident in saying that.

BTW......Your hearing is bad.

Dorton plays Belfry tonite at Dorton. Thoughts on that game?

This is the first year for us at this level. We must remember that change takes time. Belfry Middle School will come around and be fine in the future.

How many games did those 4 combined feeder schools win against Virgie, Dorton, Pikeville, etc., in the past 3-4 years. Go ahead and include Johns Creek, Phelps, and whoever else but the number remains the same.

Bevins was the only one of our feeder schools who even competed the last couple of years. And I mean compete as in being competitive.

I'll give you one guess who coached them.

And you should be.... You might even be able to win the county with next year's team...

Am I taking this the wrong way or are you implying something directly towards me?

Everybody knows and should understand that it takes a season or more for a school that has been combined to come together as a team. This Belfry Middle School is no exception. These young players are just that young players, most of these kids have been coached in previous years by people that were just coaching so that a school could have a team or their son played on the team. There was not a lot of learning going on .
This year we have took our share of defeats, but I assure you that these kids have come away learning something and I would like to think that we owe that to these coaches. I have nothing but good things to say about all the coaches at BMS.

Belfry has won somewhere around 15 games I believe plus they have played a lot of the season without Strothers. I think their coach does a good job. Be patient because they should be loaded for many years. Their 7th grade team is very good without Strothers and at least one other player not even playing on that team.

I was just saying that next year should be a cakewalk for the Pirates...

Nice post!! Looks like we do have a few mature on here :thumb: BMS is just getting started and it will take time. These kids have been thrown together from everywhere and have never played together as a team. They will be fine!

Thanx. I agree 100%.

While I don't think it will be a cakewalk, we should be favored, IMO.

Come on guys, you cant expect a young coach to bring all the kids together from the get go...I mean had BMS dominated this year everyone would be giving the coach so much praise it's not even funny..So, dont bash him on his first year at the helm of the first year of BMS basketball program. Just give him time and BMS will be great competition around the region and as well as the state. BMS has a great head coach as well as a great coaching staff, who knows the game. In due time BMS will be a top contender and will represent Belfry well....

BMS will definitely be ok in the near future. Too much expectations were placed on these kids to begin with, even during football season. You combine players who previously had little to no coaching with, playing against competition of players with more experience and older kids, new school, new systems. it seems they have to learn the game all over again. BMS will dominate all sports in the near future. We'll face the same problems Virgie faced when it comes to finding adequate competition. Look at it this way Dorton has played close to 50 games this year, Virgie probably more. We'll catch up, but it will take some time.

50 games? Not really. 38 including all scrimmages and tournaments. Belfry has played 29.

Dorton Wildcat,
Thanks for the reply, but honestly both Dorton and Virgie on a yearly bases plays too much basketball. When in your middle school careers, 2-3 years, you play close to 200 games including AAU that is just too much. when do this players have time to grow and get stronger in the weight room which could help them tremendously on the court. Perhaps that is why they do suffer being burnt out on the sport and knee injuries etc. That does seem to effect some of those players on occasion. Not saying that other schools don't but it does seem more prone to occur at Shelby Valley.

I watched Belfry play earlier in the season against Inez Middle at Belfry and they are a decent middle school team with some good looking athletes, but in no way did I think the coach or kids acted unprofesional. The coach was polite and sincere when talking to the Inez coaches and as far as Xs & Os go I fealt he did a good job of mixing up some defenses. His kids played extremley hard and were well mannered when I watched them. That is the most important thing at the Middle School level. It's not so much about Wins and Losses as it is about bestowing good morals and setting a good example. The game I saw Belfry their coach did nothing but be extremley hospitable and polite. Now I only wittnessed one game but that was the impression I got.

I always thought the kids played too much ball too, but Shelby Valley has won 3 of the last 4 Region Titles, and Virgie is defending state champ at the Middle School level so something must be right about it...

I agree...BMS will be just fine in the future.

I also remember a similar thread during football season.

I do agree that too many games have been played the past two seasons, but prior to that around 30 was the most played. I do not remember many knee injuries at Valley in the 16 years it has been a school. I can only remember a couple. Also, I do not agree with weight training during the middle school years. Especially 6th and 7th. I know personally that our boys enjoy playing a lot. Elisha absolutely loves basketball and it shows.

30 to 35 is a good number and when this program gets rolling, we will go almost as much as Virgie and Dorton, its the only way to get better.

An no one is going anywhere they are happy where they are at, great kids, great parents, support is great from the administration, and the fan support is getting better and better.Confusederved:

I think that NEXT was referring back to GOBIGRED'S very first post on this thread.

Who is the coaching staff for the Middle School?
#29
Okay, I thought that was a reply to something I said since I was quoted. I went back and read that post and I understand now.
