The Fleming County Panthers' 2013 baseball season came to an abrupt end Monday night, losing 5-4 at home to Rowan County in the first round of the 61st District tournament.

The Panthers posted a final mark of 11-21 for the year.

"We've battled all year," Fleming County coach Blake Price said. "We've played a good schedule to prepare us for a night like tonight and the same (mistakes) got us tonight that have got us all year."

Fleming started hot, notching two runs in the opening inning when Cameron Dailey knocked a double with two runners on, scoring Brady Saunders from third and Brett Fawns from second.

Fleming County maintained the 2-0 advantage until a wild pitch sent Rowan County's Kyle Bowling home in the bottom of the second inning.

Brett Fawns responded for Fleming in the top of the fourth with a solo home run for a 3-1 lead.

The Vikings' next score came in the bottom of the fourth when Devin Helvey batted a single, bringing home Jordan Cornett.

Not to be outdone, Fawns responded again, this time as a runner. With Fawns in scoring position in the top of the fifth, Dailey sent a long shot into the outfield, allowing Fawns to run home for a 4-2 Panthers lead.

Fawns also put on a strong showing from the mound but a walk of Rowan's Justin Graham in the bottom of the fifth proved costly.

With Graham on first, Jordon Cornett sent a two-run shot over the fence, knotting the score at 4-4.

Graham proved to be an even bigger problem for the Panthers in the sixth inning. With Graham waiting at third base, Kyle Bowling hit a single, scoring Graham and giving the Vikings the go-ahead run.

The Panthers were unable to mount any further offense in the top of the seventh, ending the game at 5-4 and bringing Fleming County's year to a close.

Price attributed some of his team's mistakes to youth, but said the future is bright for the Panthers.

"Ultimately, they put enough runs on the board to beat us, and that's baseball," Price said. "We had one senior play tonight, so we're going to have a good group of kids come back next year ... we've won four districts in a row coming into this, so this one has to hurt a little bit. It has to make our kids want to work harder and get better for next year."
