The dodge ball wasnt bball kids. It would surprise you how organized the boys have been and the initiative they have taken on their own. Very competitive.
But I cant say Huffman wont be missed bc he was a great player. Bigger concern tho is for him. He is a good kid and has been very misled by some in maroon. If im wrong and hes happy there next year then I will be happy for him. If im not I hope he realizes it before season starts next year.

Well that's good to hear, I hope Valley can wins some more ball games, but itâs up to the players to pushes each other each day in practice. They must also be good role model, because they are representing there school.

Shelby Valley fans will struggle with the transition to an outside coach. Every player will need to step up and earn playing time. Plenty of talent is walking the hallways of Shelby Valley but the future may not be as bright. Feeder programs are half what they used to be. Dorton is still strong but Virgie Middle needs a new coach.

Well the boys get to meet their new coach today. These boys has been through alot in the last couple of years with coach Newsome and Rowe.Nobody really knows just how bad it really was. This group of boys will play harder for coach Hicks. They won't have to worry about all that stuff going on, on the bench and they can concentrate on the game.Valley will do fine this year. The circus on the bench is no longer in town and with a new coaching staff this team will do great. So play hard boys, an play as a team which I know you will.

Well let’s hope these boys start coming together, they must become one unit on the floor, and they need to feed off each other and realize that everyone has a role on their team.

They will be fine. This is one group of kids I don't worry about. They have grown into fine young men. Remember, this is a new coach,so these boys will play harder.

It's the Napier way. Wonder what he will do without dads on the bench to blame next year on?
05-10-2013, 07:59 PM
Dads on the bench was a very bad problem
05-10-2013, 09:15 PM
What about the ex-coach/dad in the stands videoing the games and poisoning the team with his whispering?

My son played for coach Hicks so I know exactly what happened. The department of education found in Coach Hicks favor saying he was wrongfully fired. That was also in the Ashland Daily newspaper. Superintendent and AD both resigned and Coach his won his law suit. All of that happened in 2006 and he has had a lot of success since then. He will also have success at Shelby Valley.

Shelbyvalley02 you always take up for the ex coach when we all know what has been going on. You would take up for him no matter what.

All im saying is there is good and bad in all coaches, and yes i always have respect for some of the ex coaches , but let it go Shelby Valley got their new Coach and Hicks was a good one.

The inside story on this hire is that the folks in charge of the hire made their first call to Shelby Valley's former coach Jason Booher. Booher, of course, turned down SV because he has a heck of a chance to win another state championship in the next three years at Holmes. However, Booher recommended Jim Hicks highly.
Greenup Co Fan hit the nail on the head in his post above. PantherTradition should have looked further into the situation before posting. It boiled down to a personal battle at Greenup Co. Hicks was innocent and this was proven in the end.

I know very little about this suspension for Hicks, but I I think it's funny that a Pikeville fan would post this when their own coach was suspended a couple of games last year for involvement in recruitment with a current SV player...

Trying to figure this one out. Which coach from Pikeville was suspended last year? Which SV player was recruited by Pikeville?

You are absolutely right, coach Booher was contacted and he did highly rocommend coach Hicks for the job.The boys met with coach Hicks yesterday and from what I'm hearing they liked him real well.Coach Hicks will do fine at Shelby Valley and the boys will play hard for him. They are looking forward to a great summer of basketball.I am so glad these boys are happy with the coach, they sure deserve it after all they've been through.

Was no one from pike county even look at for this job.
05-11-2013, 11:24 PM
Who from Pike applied?

Well are the people in the valley in for a treat. He will have some of the kids going somewhere else before the summer is over. This is just a coach until Elisha Justice gets out of college. Not a quick fix. People will be disappointed. Every school this coach has went to has a lot of talent returning. He has ever had to develop his own team. That is the reason he keeps changing schools.

Booher's younger brother was Hicks assistant at Bath Co. There is a connection there. And Booher isn't leaving Holmes because he turned down SV and Montgomery Co.

When is Hicks first day at SV?

Sound as if you have something personal going on here??

Not true. Grant Co had only won 10 games the year before he arrived. Bath Co had not won a district championship in about 30 years before he arrived.

You are wrong! Grant Co. had nothing coming back before Coach Hicks arrived!
The current Junior class have been with him from day 1. They have worked hard and improved every year.
If there is one thing Coach Hicks can do, it is develop players! When the people of SV witness first hand the intensity that their team will bring every night, the atmosphere at their games will be electric.
My son has played for Coach Hicks the last 3 years and we are extremely sad to see him leave but wish him the best!

WILDCAT NATION Wrote:Did not say he was a bad coach just his offense does not show much love to the 4 and 5 spots no matter his address. Zack was good but he wasn't the only one on those teams. Blandon Clemons (multi year starter at PG at KCU ) and Taylor Maze (MSU Eagles) were the PG's for his 3 years at BC. Just saw some decent (on and off the court) guys at the 4 and 5 setting 8,000 screens over a 3 year span and getting 2 points per game on put backs because they got 0 play calls.
All those screens must have worked. Bath Co had not won a district tournament in 31 years, then won back to back districts under Hicks.

Regardless if you like the hire or not the Shelby Valley Community need to support our new coach

At least this long, drawn-out process is over now. As for whether this a good hire or not, no one really knows until the season starts this winter.

With the most overall basketball talent in that same span. The team went to the region the year before he arrived, and in his 1st 2 years. In year 3 he loses in the 1st round of the district and leaves for Grant Co.
