My son played for Coach Hicks at Greenup Co. For 4 years and had a great experience. He is very good coach. He runs a first class program and works as hard as any coach that I have ever seen. This will be a great hire for Shelby Valley.

He was not asking too much just not a good fit right now, Smith turned it down yesterday..

I have heard under good authority that he has accepted the position. This will be interesting at the very least......

Coaching is all he does...not much of an educator. But then...that may not matter.

 Yes, since Greg Newsome was such a great educator, I'm sure things will change so much.
Nice hire for Shelby Valley

I hope you guys get a coach that will bring the best out in the players and be the fit everyone is looking for at Virgie.
I also hope that you now realize that nobody is foaming at the mouth for the opportunity to coach there like so many on here would believe. Finding the right coach in our financially strapped county is much harder than you think, even for a tradition rich basketball school like SV.

Point guard will score alot in his offense. Bigs won't see the ball much other than rebounds and put backs but will set 50 screens a night for the 1 and 2. If SV has a good point and a decent 2 to spot and shoot then they will win some games. If not........

I watched a couple games with my brother when Hicks was at Bath Co. Personally I think he would be a good hire. Seemed to have a lot of energy and can get hustle out of kids. Not sure about the guard orientation, but Bath also had Zak Metz at the time. I'd run an offense around a scorer like that too. Was in top ten in state scoring and %'s.

You left out the most important thing. DEFENSE. His teams will flat out "D" you up. He will get the most out of every player. Just like his uncle Billy.

A lot of coaches wanted the SV job, but they really can't even discuss anything over the coaching stipend and reg. teacher pay right now because of the shape the Pike BOE is in.
Pike County basketball coaches leave a lot to be desired outside of Randy McCoy.

Heard Huffman has left Shelby Valley and enrolled at Pikeville. Hearing a few more may transfer as well.
Not sure this is the home run hire that Shelby Valley faithful were hoping for.

Did not say he was a bad coach just his offense does not show much love to the 4 and 5 spots no matter his address. Zack was good but he wasn't the only one on those teams. Blandon Clemons (multi year starter at PG at KCU ) and Taylor Maze (MSU Eagles) were the PG's for his 3 years at BC. Just saw some decent (on and off the court) guys at the 4 and 5 setting 8,000 screens over a 3 year span and getting 2 points per game on put backs because they got 0 play calls.

I also saw a few games in Coach Hicks first season at Bath County. Correct me if I am wrong but the year before he took over the same team went 11-19. The program had suffered through 18 straight losing seasons and had not won a district championship in 31 years.
In his first season they went 20-5, 6-0 regular season district games, and won the 61st District championship.

Thatâs the rumor they have been promise a coach now for a few weeks from the administration and some kids just may feel like they need a fresh start. Have the officially announce the new coach yet?

Would love to hear who your homerun hire would have been? Not that many people want a job where their fans act this stupid about basketball.

:thatsfunn Yeah I'm sure that's why Huffman transfered, and others are considering it. You're as blind as Ray Charles when it comes to who is in the kids' ears trying to get them to leave. Maybe a certain somebody who didn't get the job?
Hicks should be announced in the next day or two, and will probably meet with the team by the end of the week.

I know from a reliable source coach Hicks is signing today. As far as the boys leaving, I don't understand that. This is a new coach so why not give him a chance.Coach Newsome and that circus that was over there last year is gone, and yes you know who it is thats wanting these boys to leave. He's just mad cause he didn't get the job and got throwed off the bench. These boys will do fine under coach Hicks. All this team needed is a coach that treats them fair and not treat one or two players better than the other.Hang in there boys and lets get this summer ball rolling. Going to be a great season at Valley!!
05-08-2013, 08:28 AM
Any truth to the rumor that Coach Hicks might be bringing a "player or two" with him?
05-08-2013, 08:45 AM
Also know for a fact that coach Hicks is not bringing any players with him.
05-08-2013, 09:09 AM
The kids have parents and it's the parents decision to move them. If kids are leaving and parents taking them I don't see how you can call this a good hire for valley.

The main thing is getting these kids working and building their team chemistry before next ball season, and the parents need to keep their mouths shut, and let the coach do his JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree 100% the parents need to sat back and let him coach. These boys need to start working and getting ready for summer ball.Play as a team.I know some of the boys has already been staying every evening after school and shooting.Just keep working hard boys and listen to your new coach and great things will happen..

Lets just hope they work on there shooting , and not have dodgeball games . Heard they been doing that on some occasion lol

They have been working, and shooting. No dodgeball games so far.Napier has been with them every evening.

W/out Huffman, Valley still has the horses to be a contender next year.... that is if they buy in to the new Head Coach. Has to be 110% buy in. The team has to be centered around Belter. That is there best route to Rupp Arena.
