I heard rumblings today that the KHSAA would be implementing the rule that when a players helmet comes off on the field, that player must come off for one play like they do in college. In addition to that, I heard that they're thinking about implementing a rule that the play be blown dead when a player's helmet comes off on the field.
Anyone else heard anything about this?

Well, maybe it is just the part stating that any play will be blown dead if the helmet of any player on the field comes off or has that already been implemented as well?

That was already a rule. They added some to it for this year so if you are on defense you can't make a tackle without your helmet. It was already blown dead if you was the ball carrier.

I didn't see any blown dead this year.

I knew that but, I heard today that they either have or are considering changing it to include not just the ball carrier but, all players on the field.

That's nuts! If a kid breaks a long run you could just rip someone's helmet off and keep him from scoring!
I know I saw some Black Bears make a tackle without a helmet this season!

It is only blown dead if the ball carriers helmet comes off. The rule about making a tackle without your helmet goes into effect this year. Here is a link I found about it: http://m.wrex.com/default.aspx?pid=4107&...3drssstory

That's probably the main reason that they're thinking about implementing the rule. For the saftey of the kids.

Soooooooo, if you're the defender, and your helmet comes off you can't make the tackle? I don't get it, what if you do? Personal foul? Let the kid get back up and keep running? Maybe I read that wrong, but that is the dumbest rule I've ever heard.

That is what I got from it. If your helmet does not come off in the act of making the tackle, you can not make the tackle. If you do, you get penalized. I understand it is for player safety, but is it better to get a penalty or give up a score?
