This question has been asked numerous times, but you dont see it to much on this particular forum.
Should KY move to a classed system?
Would it need to be 2, 3, 4, 5, or even 6 classes?
Do privates hold an advantage in basketball like some do in football?
Or, is KY high school basketballs 1 winner takes all system to sacred to abolish?
Thoughts?

Never happen in this state. That's there cash cow! If they made it 6 classes it would be as watered down as football. Trinity showed last year they have an advantage getting all them inner-city, disadvantged young men to play for the rocks. These guys had more tats than the U of L B-Ball team. Last year was the worst state tourney I can remember as a spectator. Sold my tickets for the finals and went to the house. Can't speak for other areas of the state but here in NKY the privates are good but beatable. If they(catholic schools) wanted to get serious they would make one big school and still have Cov. Latin, which is a brainiac school. You graduate there when your 16. Merge CovCath, Newcath, Brossart, Holy Cross, Villa Madonna and St. Henry and you would indeed have a powerhouse in basketball and football. I believe this would help the publics as well cause a lot of decent athletes would stay home and go to there public school to get a better chance of playing. Then there would another HUGE private school for everyone to detest!

No way... Sweet 16 is awesome... You can get 15,000 to 20,000 ppl at Rupp during the Sweet 16... Football state championships 5,000 to 10,000 maybe... Just boring watching that many Championship games...

No. I am a West Virginia native. I use to say what was the use for a 15th region team be so excited to go to Rupp jst to get beat early and have very little chance to win a title. It took 13 yrs but my view changed. I love the atmosphere at Rupp because its one tourney. Having only one champion is great. WV State Tourney although there have been great games i have attended. They have 3 classes . Three different tourney's. Atmosphere is not very good.Media gives AAA more attention because it's bigger. In the regular season some AAA schools won't play a A school or AA won't play a A. Forget the class if you can play you can play regardless of school size.

I will throw in another NO.

I believe that part of the intrigue with the Sweet Sixteen is the possibility that smaller schools can compete wth the larger ones.

No, this is what makes Ky. basketball so great. There are only a handful of states who remain without a class system.

It is only us and Delaware I believe. If we go to classes, I dare say my interest in high school basketball will become nothing more than a "if I have time" affair.
Champion means you are the top dog. Not a semifinalist with no real championship to decide it.

I was thinking it was only us and another but said handful because I wanted to be somewhat factually correct. :biglmao:

The sweet 16 is magical. They have already ruined it enough with the championship game being on sunday.

No not in the bluegrass state!!! This is what makes Kentucky high school basketball so interesting every one has a chance!! Why would you want to take that away?
01-20-2013, 07:09 PM
No. That would be like the watered down the football playoffs.
01-20-2013, 07:40 PM
I'm all for it. If 48 other states feel its the best way to do it, I don't know how anyone can say we're doing it right. I've also noticed that some of you are from schools whose teams compete in the All-A Championship. Do you mean to tell me that isn't something you'd be proud of your alma mater for winning?
I do think 6 classes is too much, but even at that, ask any of the state champs from this year in football if they feel their state title is cheapened. You'll be answered with a resounding "hell no".

Absolutely not! The Sweet 16 is what makes KY high school basketball so special and unique. Everyone has the same goal to win ONE championship and make it to Rupp Arena. If we move to classes it will water down the tournament and cheapen the idea of a true state champion because if you have 4,5, or 6 "champions" there will be a debate about which is the best. The Sweet 16 answers that question for us!
In the era of babying, coddling and giving everyone a trophy because we're all winners, the Sweet 16 teaches kids and even some of us adults that we can't all be winners all the time. If we go to the class system we should also stop keeping score...

What makes high school basketball so special in this state is the one champion. A very small school like Shelby Valley and a huge school like Ballard being on the same level, playing for the same championship. When you add classes, it's not as special.
01-20-2013, 09:19 PM
I think the other Paintsville fans will agree with me, as will the Shelby Valley fans that winning the state championship in KY is special. Any championship is special obviously but something about winning a tournament that consists of all schools of all classes and of all areas. There is a mystique in knowing that for one year a little team from the mountains was the best in the state, that they were better than the Louisville teams, and Better then the lex teams. From Pikeville to Paducah no one could top that team when it mattered, on one of the most storied floors in all of basketball in front of 20,000 or more people they beat all comers and proved their worth to the state.

So pretty much all nos so far.
What about a 2 class system, or a 3 class system.
Keep in mind, it doesnt really matter to me. I like it the way it is as well, but its a debate you here very little of while the football forum sees one of these threads a week.

Never!!! The only other state that matters in high school basketball, Indiana, decided, in their infinite wisdom, to go class. Look what happened, their magic disappeared. They had a toury as good as ours. They made a mistake and we shouldn't either.
