Post who you believe if you feel like it, always fun to see people's opinions. Here is mine at this moment...
A Team
1.Paintsville
2.Betsy Layne
3.Belfry
4.Johns Creek
5.Millard
6.Johnson County
7.Dorton
8.Pikeville
9.Adams
10.Mullins
From what I have been told, Magoffin County, Martin County would be knocking on the door of the top ten. Elkhorn would be close too.
B Team
1.Pikeville
2.Johnson County
3.Paintsville
4.Magoffin County
5.Valley
6.Dorton
7.South Floyd
8.Betsy Layne
9.Allen Central
10.Wesley
Any teams I have not seen or heard something about from a reliable source I did not include. The four Floyd County teams on any given night could beat each other, its already been proven. We (Wesley) were beat by South Floyd by three points but missed 10 lay ups, so we beat ourselves that game. Betsy Layne and South Floyd was a over time game and I was told Allen Central lead South Floyd most of the game and lost by a small margin.

I would say a healthy Magoffin 8th grade team would be in the top 10. But they have been battling injury and sickness. Jaren Lovely is the point guard for Magoffin. Really fun to watch. He's a solid shooter but his passing abilities outshine his scoring I do believe. And he also plays good defense.

Pikeville have a new coach this year?

5. Johns Creek
6. Johnson County

I have not seen all Pike County teams, but based on head to head and other list, and the teams I have seen Magoffin has to be in top 6, lost by 1 to J Central at Central and beat central by double digits at home. Martin County should be in top ten. Paintsville is best I have seen.

Was told Johnson County was down a player or two when Martin beat them but was also told Martin held there own against Johnson County when they both had all there players. Also given, Dylan James is playing high school only (from information I have been told), Martin County could have been the best team in the region this year. As for Pike County, you could have 1A through 1G, the top of that county could beat each other any given night. Over the summer during summer ball, Betsy Layne beat and was beaten by Dorton, Millard and Belfry. Betsy Layne would certainly be in the conversation at this moment, and will even more so when they get one of there three 6'2 boys who is out with a broken leg. Paintsville is just a very talented team, may not have quite as much height inside as other schools but they are absolutely loaded with talent and play very fundamental basketball. Think we will know a lot more about everybody after the tournament we (Wesley Christian) are hosting this week. You have Johnson County, Betsy Layne, Paintsville, Millard, Dorton, Martin County and Adams all in it and each team will play three games a piece and never play the same team twice. Will be some interesting match ups that should answer a lot of questions about a lot of teams.
If you want to see some interesting games you might not get to see other wises, come out and watch. Games are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday starting at 5:30 and there will be 4 games each night. Admission is only going to be $5 for adults to see some great basketball.

Guess you wasnt aware of Belfry winning the Dorton tournament in which Paintsville and Dorton was in. lol.
12-07-2012, 09:10 PM
Not sure how anyone with common sense would put a team ahead of another one the they have lose too. Belfry is 8-0 now with good wins at the Dorton Invitational.

Guess you wasn't aware this is the same tournament Paintsville had to drop out of after they won there first two games. The two teams never played, do a little research next time!

I've seen both Paintsville and Belfry play, both are good but beatable, the Tigers just have a better all around game than the Pirates....
12-10-2012, 01:08 AM
Why sign up for a tournament if you know you aint going to get to play the finals. I am sure we are willing to play anyone at anytime. Drop out of the tournament or run like chickens what the difference. Belfry won the championship at Dorton. All around better game inside and out.
12-10-2012, 10:22 PM
Fact, Belfry has plenty of tradition when it comes to athletics. Belfry should be good. You not only have kids from Belfry, but also West Virginia. Just because some people on this thread don't put you at the top, don't start bashing other programs. Run like chickens....really?

Because all the teams that play in the 57th district have a hard time scheduling games, so they take every game they can get. And no one ever denied Belfry won the tournament at Dorton or that Belfry was a good team, but simple fact is Paintsville was undefeated when they had to drop out and they have played more of the top teams in this region at this moment to prove how good they are. As for a better game inside and out, I think you would very hard pressed to find a more balanced team in the mountains unless you went to the 13th region where Knox and Wayne County play. Simple fact is Paintsville is a very good ball team, with really good fundamental players and maybe one of the best middle school players I've ever seen so be careful what you say when you call people chicken and such, might come back to haunt you in the future.

Well, why don't we just encourage both Paintsville and Belfry coaches to schedule a game, quit arguing and find out who is better. Lace 'em up!
12-11-2012, 07:18 PM
That's a wonderful idea maybe if we can get something like a pike co vs the 15th region, have 5 of the best pike co schools take on 5 of the best in the 15th on a weekend or during a week and have Paintsville vs Belfry as the finale...

There actually is a 15th region tournament for middle school Jan. 26-27 and will be played at Pikeville, Pike Central and Mullins.
12-12-2012, 04:40 PM
Who are the participants?
12-12-2012, 08:26 PM
Not sure. I'm new to middle school coaching. I know we (Pikeville) are in it. Should be very competitive but a lot of games crammed into 2 days back to back.
12-12-2012, 09:41 PM
Looks like JC is starting to get back on track after rough loss to Paintsville, heard they played a a great second half to beat magoffin by double digits, if they keep it up they may be playing for the 15th region championship when the tournament rolls around!
12-12-2012, 10:49 PM
Johnson county beat magoffin tonight by 12. So johnson county is the better team in my book.
12-13-2012, 11:07 AM
If Trenton Russell was still playing for the middle school team I believe Magoffin would be one of the better teams in the 15 IMO
