My 5th guest article is in the Ashland Daily online section today. It discusses Inez's return to Eastern Kentucky after winning the state championship in 1954 and how the city of Paintsville greeted them. Check it out:

Thanks, I appreciate that. I'll have more articles out in the following weeks and I'll keep everyone updated on when they come out.
Some of the topics will include: Paintsville/Pikeville rivalry; 1932 Paintsville girls team; 1956-57 Paintsville team; Albert "Junior" White from Meade Memorial; the highest scoring games in Paintsville's history; Bill Mike Runyon - the basketball player; and other topics!

The newest article in the series I have been writing for the Ashland Daily went online this afternoon. The subject of this article is former Meade Memorial standout player - Albert "Junior" White. One of the best ever players to have played in the 15th Region!

Another article I've written has been posted on the Ashland Daily website. This one is about how Kentucky High School basketball was divided into classes in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The link is below:

As a Tiger fan I am very proud of our basketball histroy. Last year I was over at Johnson Central and I noticed the display about Harry Meek and how he was a McDonald's All-American. I decided to google the 1984 McDonald's All-American team and I could not find the Harry Meek name anywhere. After a little more googling I found some video clips of the McDonald's All-American game, and yet again no HARRY MEEK lol! COME ON MAN! Does JC have to make crap up about there histroy??? HEY EAGLE FANS JR AND JOHN REALLY WERE KENTUCKY MR. BASKETBALL but HARRY MEEK WAS NOT A McDONALD's ALL American. If he was why isn't he on the list on there web site????????????? SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN???????

If you would have took the time to read any his articles you would know that has wrote about basketball in Eastern Kentucky not just Paintsville high school basketball. Maybe he can shine some light on the subject I stated above, since he is a historian who has studied well. Look it up , there is no Harry Meek listed, I am not the first person to notice this! A is lie is a lie!

This literally has nothing to do with this thread. Aside from that though, Harry is one of the all-time greats at Johnson Central, and very well may have been a nominee for the McDonald's All American game, just not on the final roster. Either way he was a phenomenal athlete.

I'm in that school every day and have yet to see a display of Mr. Meek. There is a display of David Couch though in the main lobby. David went to Army and played for Coach K. In addition to that, he collected many athletic and academic accolades through his career. He is now a successful engineer working for KDE.
As for Harry, he was one of the best athletes to come through JCHS history, but played baseball at UofL instead of basketball. He did however play in the Kentucky/Indiana All-Star game. I've never heard him tell anyone that he played in that game and I've known him for several years.

They must of took the display down in recent years, it clearly stated he was McDonald's All-American. I clearly remember it and it was laughed about for years by many Tiger fans. If its not there anymore so much for that. He was a decent play but never at the leval of a Keith Adkins or a Todd Tackett. Probably why is played baseball in college.

Many of you know I coach at Paintsville and played at Johnson Central. Both schools have brought alot to the 15th region throughout it's history. My Dad played at Oil Springs back in the late 50's on a team that won over 30 games but lost to Meade in the regional tourney to Harry Meeks Dad. I could tell alot of great stories. My reason for posting is the fact that Harry Meek WAS a Mcdonald's All American (Honarable Mention). I played with Harry and he was the toughest and most determined player I ever played with. I still think he's the best player to ever put on a Johnson Central uniform. Bob Hutchinson presented Harry with the certificate at halftime of one of our games. We lost in the state tourney that year (1984) in a game we controlled throughout. We were ahead 75-70 with 30 seconds to go and lost 76-75. That team went on to the final four and we were crushed that we let a chance slip away. We were a top 5 team that season. Lost to Logan County in the AIT 58-50. Logan county won the state championship in 1984. Don't mean to ramble but lastly I will say this, DennyCrum coached Louisville when Harry signed to play baseball there. Coach Crum met with Harry three separate occassions and practically begged Harry to play for Louisville. By the way..Louisville won the NCAA championship in 1986. Harry should have been on that team. I still think he regrets that decision. To say that Harry wasn't as good as Todd Tackett or Keith Adkins is ludicrous. Trust me, he wasn't as atheletic as Todd but his toughness and determination were like nothing I've ever seen. He refused to be out worked. Harry was heavily recruited in basketball but chose baseball. I love the history of the 15th region but don't call out players and question their ability.

Honarable Mention part was the IMPORTANT PART that was left off that picture. You are welcome to your opinion same as I am. My point was about how the picture that was in the JCHS trophy case was MISLEADING. There is no doubt that Harry Meek was one of the best in JCHS histroy. Its great that any player from eastern kentucky wins a award but when you allow people to lay claim to a award that they didn't win, that is a slap in the face to the players that earn such awards!! I once heard a JC fan tell me about how Harry scored in the last few mins, of a game (1984 McDonlds All American game) he wasn't even at :lmao:. I also know a teacher in the JC system that in recent years laid claim to going STATE in a sport he was even inducted into the JCHS Hall-of-fame but his claim was a BLACK LIE. Making false claims is WRONG and it is always WRONG a LIE is WRONG.

Harry hit a shot to win the region in 1984. I passed him the ball. That's probably what your friend was referring to. You sound like a young man with little knowledge on history of 15th region. . I'm sure the intent of JC wasn't to mislead you about Harry or anything he accomplished. Please private message me or better yet, come by PHS and we can talk. J.R. Vanhoose has a nice thread going here and you nor I need to talk anymore concerning this subject.

I think I need to finally post a response as well. I started this thread to post updates on the book I was writing about the 1996 State Champion Paintsville Tigers and the subsequent guest articles that I was writing about this process for the Ashland Daily.
I have no "dog" in this fight, but does it really matter if a display did exist claiming someone was a McDonald's All-American? How does it relate to the thread?
I do know this, Harry Meek was a tremendous player. Comparisons to players decades apart can never be measured. The game, especially in basketball, changes. Styles change. Systems change. Players develop under new/different training techniques, etc.
Could we please drop the discussion that has taken over the thread and let it return to discussions about the book and the articles that I've written? I'd appreciate it!!

Enough talk of JC in this thread.
Want to start a thread and actually talk civilly about it, probably won't last long, but it is finished in this one.

Great article JR; just as Paintsville celebrated Inez's state championship in 54' we did as well for the tigers in 96'. Seems there has always been commrodery between these two schools.

Was at the 74' game and had to the loudest that that gym ever got as Runyon & the Tigers did catch fire in the 4th quarter and as each shot went down the louder it got
reportedly shaking & vibrating the windows of the local residents.
