I hear the Blackcats will be on turf hopefully by the time school start. This will definitely help an already great program only get better. Congratulations!

They really, really, really, really needed it. Great to hear for them though, they deserve a nice playing surface, as their current one is just an insult to the caliber of football teams Prestonsburg produces.

Congrats Blackcats on joining the turf club. Hopeful for a great season.

Well i'm glad & sad at the same time. I will miss the dust & mud bowls that make football what it is. At the same time the turf will be great and the Blackcats speed will shine. I can only imagine how it could have been if we had turf over the past few years with that spread offense. We could have really show cased the speed P'burg had on the field.
Cant stand the wait for football. It's killing me!!!

It would look cool with big black cat on 50

I hear that Betsy Layne is getting turf also, although this may be old news. But, it was new to me. Man, did they need some improvements there!!!

From what I have been told. Betsy layne and pburg will have turf the first day after dead period.

I noticed a few pieces of equipment to tear up what's left of a surface on the field today.
Glad both Prestonsburg & Betsy Layne are getting state of the art fields.

South Floyd not getting any love from the Turf Gods? Awesome for P'burg and BL! All about how important something is to you; great for them.

Getting a turf field takes away from the Home Field Advantage

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one sir. Late October has not been nice to Pburg's field in recent years.

Hey...I played on the OLD field at Prestonsburg, so I was never very attached to the new field anyway...
Finally...We have been working towards turf for the past decade it seems.
My understanding is that Prestonsburg and Betsy Layne are getting turf, but South Floyd and Allen Central are not. The reason is that the future consolidation school will merge Allen Central and South Floyd at a different location, and that field will have turf.

Jon419 Wrote:Long over due, glad to see it happen. From what Ive been told the turf should be complete by June 1.I handled the design, layout, and overseen the construction from start to end of the Hazard Turf project a few years ago. I hope you can be on it by June 1st but July 1st would be more optimistic. It takes time coordinating and completing the grade work. Not sure how much under drain line has to be dug. Seems like you could ditch everything to the middle and out toward the river under the press box area. A lot of drainage tiles to install. You have to get the curb poured and set, all the gravel and sand delivered and put in layers and compacted. Getting everything on the right grade is critical and time consuming if it is done correctly. Basically you are trying to compact beach sand and keep it on grades of less the 0.5%. Instead of a 1.5-2.5 foot crown down the center of the field you will have something like 6 inches (depending on what brand turf you went with). When they start laying the carpet down and stitching it together it goes fast. Maybe a week to a week and a half to get the actual carpet down, names, numbers, striping, logos, etc., sand and rubber pellets in it, and it all cemented down to the curb. From what I understand P-Burg bid the project and this will also take a little longer near the completion because I am sure you will have several walk throughs with a punch list, turf folks will have to sign off for warranty purposes, etc. Anyway, I was involved in one from the conception to dedication and consulted on two other ones. I'm not saying it can't be done by June 1, that is a lot to coordinate in that time. The thing that will help your timeline is that the project was bid out, it is a little easier to hold their feet to the fire, ours was put together within the community with hard working, very generous individuals, its hard to rush free labor. LOL Do you happen to know what brand of turf you are going with?

Only point I have in this is with a turf field you automatically lose home field advantage. Yes you have your fans, but you don't have a field that you know every little dip or rough patch in. Everyone has turf and all turf is the same therefore everyone knows the field.

^The only home field advantage Prestonsburg would ever have with their old field was if they played golf matches on it.
I hope Prestonsburg fans don't get hurt over that. I love watching games there!

Congratulations! Someone here should post some pictures when the turf is installed.

They're going at it pretty quick. Drove by the other day and the old field appeared to be already gone and leveled out.
In Progress pics would be nice if someone could post some!

âRelax, all right? Donât try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, theyâre fascist. Throw some ground balls â itâs more democratic.â

I was over that way the other day and they had the equipment on the field and and it tore up looking like it was close to leveling everything out

Congrats P-burg. Glad to see this.

Is anyone sponsoring the turf fields in Floyd County or is the school system picking up the cost?
05-07-2012, 09:53 PM
The school system paid for it.
05-08-2012, 09:11 PM
Youd think with all the support Pburg has they could pay for it themselves. Although I heard they might be getting some other new facilities.

Turf is becoming more affordable with more companies being able to compete.
