Boone County's Sydney Moss wins Associated Press girls' basketball player of the year in Kentucky

Boone County senior guard Sydney Moss won the Associated Press girls’ basketball state player of the year award Wednesday afternoon.

It is yet another award for Moss, a Florida signee, who also won the Gatorade state player of the year award in March among multiple other honors in her career.

“Just awesome,” Boone County coach Nell Fookes said. “She is certainly very deserving.”

Moss, one of five candidates for Miss Basketball, has been invited to try out for the Kentucky All-Star girls’ basketball team April 21 at Georgetown College.

Fookes said Moss has returned to lifting weights on Mondays and has been shooting on Tuesdays and Thursdays and preparing for the Kentucky-Indiana All-Star Game.

The girls games will be played June 8 at Freedom Hall in Louisville and June 9 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Fookes said she was proud of the fact Moss has been recognized as a “great player.”

“To get the AP vote across the state, it’s just extremely impressive for Sydney,” Fookes said.

The all-star game rosters will be announced April 29. The Miss Basketball winner will be announced April 28.

Moss, the daughter of San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Randy Moss, helped Boone County to the Girls Sweet Sixteen tournament at Western Kentucky University. Boone County completed its season with a 30-4 record.

Moss, who finished just three points shy of 3,000 for her career, averaged 23.3 points, 10.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 4.1 steals and 1.6 blocks this season.

The all-state girls’ first-team also includes Ryle senior guard Jenna Crittendon (Xavier signee), who is also a finalist for Miss Basketball.

Crittendon led Ryle in scoring at 17 points per game and in rebounding at six per game. She shot 52 percent from the field and 72 percent from the line. She scored 30 or more points in three games this season.

Area honorable mention selections included Deja Turner (Holmes), Nicole Kiernan (Newport Central Catholic), Courtney Sandlin and Kara Taulbee (Walton-Verona), Kaytlin Siegmundt (Campbell County), Lydia Nash (Boone County), Meredith Hartfiel (Dixie Heights), Olivia Voskuhl (Notre Dame) and Sarah Futscher (Bishop Brossart).
