Paul Rains to Letcher Central
#1
Seen on CP's facebook that Letcher Central has hired Paul Rains as the new head football Coach.

Big Big hire for The Cougars. Shouldn't be long before there back
#2
As long as he stays long term. I think we will be fine. This rebuild will be a good 2 to 3 years in the making.

Wow! Looks like Ozz worked some magic there. Great, great hire!
#4
He has already said 2 is the most. Bad hire. Another retread padding his retirement portfolio at the expense of the Letcher County School System. Not pleased.
#5
just don't thank it well work but what do i know but good luck
#6
I like the hire. His teams will play hard and have fun playing.
#7
It's about time they got a "coach"!! Good hire if he will stay and can work his way through the grand ol' letcher county political system.
#8
Did anyone on the hiring commity ask why Rains left lca or the last job he had. I dont think anyone done the research to find out why. Why would you leave a private school that you won the state title with unless there were a problem. Just wanting to know what we have brougt in to coach our kids.

Comes from a very reliable source.

He won't win at Letcher be lucky if he stays 3 years.

Letcher County is just blessed with so much talent that its unreal. I mean hell look they get kids from Whitesburg and Neon. They should be able to win state every year. On a serious note, nobody could do real well at Letcher. They dont get nothing from Old Letcher High area and still all they have is Neon and Whitesburg. Not exactly two powerhouses that they are drawing their kids from. Quit expecting a coach to come in fix everything. You got to have some genetics to have great athletes. Logan Johnson was a freak but there wasnt much to go with him. Good luck Paul Raines you are going to need it "GENERAL".

Dude you are crazy. He's won every where he's been. Been to the State Championship Game twice, both with LCA. Won it all back in 2009. He went 5-7 last year at Mercer County with an upset win over Russell County who was 9-1 coming into the game in the playoffs. Over the past 3 Years Mercer won only 9 games. Coach Rains won have of those in one year, last year. So your statement about he can't win at Letcher Central is completely way off. He wins at every place he goes but it will take more than a year to do so the only problem is will he stay long enough to do so. Since 2003 He's 76-27 and been to the playoffs EVERY YEAR except 2010 because he took that year off
#14
People forget about how well he did at Montgomery County. His '95 team was an old 3A State Semi Finalist (lost to BG I believe) and was regional runner up in '96.

Called this one.
Rains is a good coach, but we'll have to see how he fits in at Letcher.
I dont think Rains would have taken the job if he didnt plan on staying there for many years.
Cant wait to see Whitley travel to LCC this year.

He's a good coach with a solid record...but he has gypsy blood. I hope that Letcher can see this and get a young up and coming coach in there to assist him and be his right hand man while learning how he does things. That way they will have some continuity IF he leaves unexpectedly. Good luck to you all down there at Letcher.

Anyone know what kind of offense he likes to run spread or ground and pound? Is he offense or defensive minded? More or less will he be running the off or def or both? How about the assistants who stays? Any new assistants coming in with him?
#21
Still don't know. Other people on here knows a little more about him than I do.

3 wins max...
#26
I heard through the grapevine that Bobby Bouchette was coming out for the team...
#27
Spread O. Mercer was very much improved from the start of the season to the end of the season. Just wonder why he only stayed at Mercer one year. They have tons of talent. They have more talent walking the halls than anyone in this region. (Anderson, Boyle, Danville, Garrard) So what is issue? Will he stay at LCC long?
#28
Mercer was straight Tony Franklin last year. Spread it out. Can't remember what they did defensively though. I do know Mercer improved tremendously throughout the year.
#29
Have heard from multiple sources that Mercer County is a nightmare school to coach at in any sport at this time. That they have had a lot of internal problems and political strife. These are only rumors but the sources are pretty reliable.
#30
Spread offense no huddle offense lots of short high percentage passes and screens. On defense ran a 3-5 with zone coverage and lots of blitzing from the LB's.

I also was very suprised he left Mercer his first year out they had about 70 kids on the team and got better as the year went forward. Also had alot of young talent and seemed to be getting ready to give Boyle and Lexington Catholic some decent games this season.
