Just a quick update that I got. When I was taking my son to get his haircut at Main St this morning, I saw Anna Craft and ask her when we was going to get a new football coach and she told me the first week in April. She also said the KHSAA had given them a extension on spring practice till the first week of April.

You can basically have spring practice when you want. No special favor.

I hope that the new coach is ready ?

They did give schools the option of picking when they did spring ball this year ( instead of the mandatory 3 weeks after basketball), but you had to inform the KHSAA in December when that would be. According to KHSAA, they were going to use 3-19 thru 4-6 as their window. So, since they were suppose to start Monday, they had to ask for an extension.

Honestly the Wms middle school team only won one game last year. They tried dividing the teams again hoping for better numbers but honestly I dont see it. We are in need of a good coach who can get the kids out and off their X box and playstation games. It will take around four to five years to turn our program around. Jenkins had a better middle school program than us last year. We are suppose to get some of those big lineman they had but honestly I dont see them leaving Jenkins. I see them sticking together and been pretty good in the future.

If they gave a Oscar for keeping a hired coach a secret, they would win hands down.

The school SBDM Council is just now creating a search/screening committee to interview and screen for the hiring process.
Don't expect to hear anything for a couple of weeks.

Surgeon,
So you make the statement that no one at LCC has ever wanted Dixon or Larkey. First of all I look at results, then what the coach has to work with, number of scholarships signed each year, players attitudes, past players comments, time put in coaching, scouting, adjusting during games, a coach that truly cares about their education and their health and safety. Did I say results? For what he has to work with and the number of full ride scholarships that Hazard players are getting every year no one can really question any of the results. They probably average more than half a dozen free rides a year. Not bad for a 1A school with probably 100-150 boys in the entire school. To me that is results. That's +6% of the total male student body with football scholarships. And those kids are competing for the same scholarships that the LCC kids are going after. So +6% at LCC would be 25-35 football scholarships a year.
But you will make a statement that no one has ever wanted Dixon and make it sound like he isn't even in the same league. Not sure what the LCC issue is with Dixon unless it is because he is quiet, humble, he doesn't scream, yell, jump up and down, or throw things at the players. I assume the same group using the same thought process went through this same process when your recently departed coach was hired. How did that work out for you?
Please stick with your zero interest in Dixon. Not only Hazard but all the coaches in 5A District 8 will sleep better at night.
Little Al would have them up all night, and not just District 8. Everyone on your schedule!

Rollitover,
Listen pal, Surgeon does not speak for the entire county. I am a long time football fan of all the teams in Eastern Kentucky that happens to be a Cougar fan. There are many Cougar fans that would love to steal Dixon from you guys but we realize that he is pretty content where he is at and nobody can blame him for that. I'm not sure who Surgeon is and what he is basing his comments on. The community just wants someone that will care about the kids and pick up where Hillard left off. The past two season have been rough on the entire county and all we want to do is get back to being competitive. I'm not sure who our administation will hire but I hope it is someone like Dixon, Haddix, Hollan, Larkey, Holcomb, Big Dudley or Coach Haywood but those guys are far and few in between. At this point we would be satisfied with a young enthusiastic coach that wants to be here for a while and not look to just pad his retirement with the big salary. We need someone that cares about the kids like Coach Dixon does and tries to get the most out of the talent that we have. I hope you don't base your opinion of Cougar fans on the comments that Surgeon has made, he is only one voice among many that wants the best for our kids. Good luck down in Dawg county this upcoming season and we were all proud of what Hazard did this past season.

Could I please make one request? Please don't put Al Holland's name on the same list as Larkey, Holcomb, Dudley Hilton and Coach Haywood. Please. He has never won a high school game.

Yogibear,
I most definitely agree with you buddy. It will take Little Al many years to actually be mentioned in the same breath as those other guys, I only threw that in because some people had been talking about him being a strong candidate and the same goes for Haddix at PCC. I think both are great coaches but not legends like the rest of those guys. When your mention Hillard, Larkey, Haywood, Holcomb your touching on greatness and I would never diminish what they have accomplished over the years.

Lambert #1,
Well said, and I agree with everything you are saying. I did not intend to lump the entire LCC school system and county into agreeing with Surgeon's logic. I read his comments and fired back somewhat at LCC in general instead of him. I am sure LCC will come to thedecision given the cards they are dealt. Yogi, you are correct also. Little Al,will have a lot to prove and will have to consistently win and get years behind him before he deserves to be on a short list with those other guys. But I think he has all the tools to get it done.
Best of luck on the search!

What made Hillard Howard such a great football coach ?
03-28-2012, 11:41 PM
His ability to motivate everyone around him. He didn't do anything magically with the X's and O's but he was a true leader that made everyone that played for him elevate their game to a higher level. Some people are born to be a head coach and some are born assistant coaches and Hillard was definitely a true head coach. Hillard was always smart enough to surround himself with people with a high football IQ and that made his job easier for him. Just my thoughts but I sure do think he had something special when it came to leading kids.

Would be shocked if it happens. Who knows in the end though? Definitely a big name though. Not that big of a secret though.

So--if it is not really a big secret----let's hear the name

Some of your own people know. Ask them.
03-29-2012, 09:18 AM
Hillard Howard was a unique Coach-he had the ability to get kids to where they would run through a wall for him. As Lambert#1 said, he also surrounded himself with good, quality, and caring people . He is the best"people person" that I was ever around. I have witnessed parents come to him mad as h--- over a situation; and by the time the meeting was over they were wanting to take him to Dairy Queen and buy him a cup of coffee. Like him or not, anyone that comes into contact with him will come away shaking their head and saying to themselves" What did he just talk me into". There is only one Hillard Howard and there will never be another like him. That's My opinion and I'm sticking to it.

From what I know it is Dudley Hilton. Heard at work he was tired of the 24-7 job you have to do in college, plus he will make more money at LCC. Al Holland will take over UPIKE.
Hilton will draw his retirement, and be paid very well at LCC.

That would definitely be a homerun for sure. Had not heard this particular rumor but I've seen stranger things happen in Letcher County. Would Dudley really leave UPIKE with his son playing there??????
