Hopkinsville

Coach: Tonya Wells.

What to look for: The Tigers’ defense is their top strength, as they hold opponents to 43 points a game. Soldo is the cog on offense, Cole is a presence on the boards and point guard Majors is the floor general. “She’s very good at not turning the ball over,” Wells said. “She can score when she needs to, or she can take care of getting everyone else points.” The Tigers are on a 12-game winning streak and defeated Marshall County 60-49 on Jan. 17.

Key player: Soldo, who has committed to Murray State, averages nearly 20 points and is the nucleus of the team. “She’s a coach’s dream,” Wells said. “She does things before you even ask her.”

Coach-speak: “It’s amazing for our program,” Wells said of the Sweet 16 debut. “It’s good for us to be on the map now. People know who we are.”

Marshall County

Coach: Joseph Simmons.

Last trip to state: 2009 (lost 53-43 to Henderson County in first round).

What to look for: They’re young, but the Marshals — who’ve also won 12 in a row — won’t be rattled by the fierce competition they’ll face. They took on some of the state’s toughest teams, playing Boone County close in the Gateway Holiday Tournament, which produced five Sweet 16 teams. The balanced offense includes McKenty, who scored 31 points against Community Christian, and Tory Fehrenbacher, who had 23 in the regional final and was named tournament MVP. “We normally have a different leading scorer every night.”

Key player: McKenty suffered a knee injury midway through the season, and since her return, the Marshals haven’t lost a game. “She’s been more aggressive offensively since she came back,” Simmons said.

Coach-speak: “They’re dialed in right now. They trust each other, and that’s the biggest thing for our team.”
