what do u mean by freshmen coach? and i think that the guy from dorton is a good great coach and also the virgie coach...it seems like they both know what their doin and are very good with the kids. the virrgie coach is a lil more tempered tho as what i have seen of them.but great job to both of them thanks guys!!!!!

I dont know if you can consider the coach from Dorton any good since he has been dominated by Newsome from virgie the past 4 or 5 years. I'd say Newsome is the best coach. bar none.

I also heard Dorton was pretty much throwing in the white flag  this regular season trying to get out of playing there arch rivals. Is there any truth to this ?

Coach Davis is a GREAT coach and even better person. To say Newsome is the best hands down is pushing it but he is good.

Best I have seen or know

Coach Davis - Dorton
Coach Newsome - Virgie
Coach at Elkhorn City
Coach at AB Combs
Coach at SMS
Coach at Robinson

Coach Goldsmith at Lawrence does a good job but most have told me he is just the face and the younger guys with him do a lot of the practice preparation etc.

Kieth May at Turkey Creek was pretty darn good also.

Mike Mullins - Elkhorn City

Absolutely no truth to this(As is the case with most things "you hear"). Greg called us about changing the dates for our games since they were on the same night as Valley games. Booher wanted them changed because Elisha plays with the varsity. Greg said that he didn't think we should play each other this year. We want to play the games because of the atmosphere it creates and the money it brings in for our team. Whether or not we win, we are not afraid and will never run from competition. We have a very tough schedule this year and that was planned to make us better. Did we think Greg was throwing in the white flag by asking this? Certainly not--he said we play each other too much each year and it usually leads to hurt feelings on the part of the fans.

I guess we'll see next year how good either coach is since both teams will be down considerably.

Since when did getting beat by Virgie make someone a bad coach. If this is true, then there are no good coaches.

Don't always listen to talk have-it-ur-way.

I do like the guy from Dorton too... just didn't know his name!

I think that JR VanHoose is the man that most of the credit should go to as far as working with the younger players. What say you, Fuzzy?
#12
just because you can play the game doesnt mean you can coach the game, DUH :wtf1:

Greg Newsome is the best grade school coach in this area....

What could possibly be wrong with J.R. ?
#15
I would have to say Greg Newsome. He is the best of all coaches at making adjustments both during the game and from game to game.
#16
Chris somebody at Osborne Elem.

DortonWildcat5 in one of your posts you said "since when did getting beat by Virgie make someone a bad coach, then you go on to say if this is true there are no good coahes." So pretty much your saying Virgie dominates everyone, which they do. Players don't coach themselves, so I'm going to stick with my first post and say Greg Newsome is best Junior High coach hands down.

I never said the Dorton coach wasn't a good person, what little I've talked to him, he's been very nice and seems to have a good sense of humor.

I agree with your post that Greg is the best coach. If one school has dominated another school, that doesn't necessarily mean that the losing coach is not a good coach. Over the past 4 or 5 years, we have lost very few games to anyone except Virgie, but I don't consider the coaches we've beat to be bad coaches just because we have beat them. We have been blessed with remarkable talent for such a small school.

Dorton and Virgie are both gold mines for talent so I think anyone could coach those places. That guy that coaches or used to coach Turkey Creek (May) is much better than either.
#20
I hope May is a better coach than he is a referee...

I agree that Keith is/was an excellent coach, but Turkey Creek certainly wasn't lacking talent either.

Thats basically what it all boils down to..........its more about the Jimmy's & Joe's than it is the X's & O's.

That's true for just about all levels of ball.

Don't get me wrong, there are people who can do more with some kids than others but that's mostly due to personality differences.

yep

Ronald Combs from hazard is the best coach. Every year he has a good team and last year his team was unstopable they went 42-6 now tell me that isnt good

42-6 is decent, but that's actually quite a few losses in Middle School ball....I watched Hazard get thumped by Pikeville's 8th grade team the other day by like 35 points...

I agree. It is easy to look like a good coach when you always have good players, but the real test of a coach is how he does with mediocre talent. No coach can win with no talent, but some can turn mediocre talent into a good team. The coaches who show respect to their players and demand respect in return are usually the ones that get it done. A good coach also knows how to deal with different personalities.

Good post HappyGilmore!

It is easy to coach the middle school level talent 95% the time.I'M not impressed the coaches in the area.Talent always wins out.Size is a big key in middle school. It only takes acouple of decent players to win .The Virgie plays great competition and runs a great offense. He would make a great high school coach[maybe at Besty Layne]:beg: I think the coach at adams is good also, they beat Elkhorn City the other day!!!!!!!!Virgieowns the pike couny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:theman:
#28
It took Virgie Middle School 3 overtimes to beat Pikevilles middle school. Nothing is said about them.
#29
Well I don't know what you all call grade school. In Clay it is K-6. The best grade school coach ever over here would have been the high school coach Glenn Gray. I think he coached 9 seasons and was in the championship 6.

Excellent Point. The first thing a coach has to do is demand respect from his players. And you said it the best in a prior post. Virgie and Dorton will be down the next couple of years, so it will be interesting to see which coach will prevail, in this rivalry.
