LEXINGTON, KY. â It was a familiar story for the Moore High School boysâ basketball team, which once again squandered a big lead and lost to a ranked opponent.
Henry Clay shot 69.6 percent in the second half and overcame a 19-point deficit to beat the Mustangs 77-73 in Wednesdayâs quarterfinals of the Republic Bank Holiday Classic at Lexington Catholic.
Henry Clay (8-4), No. 9 in The Courier-Journalâs preseason poll of coaches, got 26 points, 10 rebounds and four assists from sophomore Jordan Green. The Blue Devils trailed 59-40 with 2:07 left in the third quarter before closing the game with a 37-14 run.
âBasically we just tore up the playbook and challenged their hearts and Henry Clay pride,â coach Daniel Brown said. âYou saw some young guys really step up ⦠and attack more.â
The Blue Devils will face No. 11 Lexington Catholic (11-1) in todayâs 6:30 p.m. semifinal. No. 22 Bardstown (7-3) will meet No. 1 Trinity at 8. The championship game is set for 7 p.m. Friday.
No. 7 Moore (9-3) was led by Mekale McKay (19 points, seven assists) and William Bryant (19 points, eight rebounds).
The loss was reminiscent of the Mustangsâ 74-69 loss to Bardstown on Dec. 16 in the first round of the King of the Bluegrass Holiday Classic, when they blew a 12-point halftime lead.
Moore coach Shedrick Jones Jr. said defense was the issue against Henry Clay, pointing to the Blue Devilsâ 16-of-23 shooting in the second half.
âThatâs just total lack of defense,â he said. âGenerally when I sub we keep that intensity. But tonight, from man one to man nine, we didnât defend.â

Would have liked to have seen this matchup between two of the best teams in the state! Figured Moore would win but, I guess it was kind of a home game for HC.

When Henry Clay trailed Moore 59-40 late in the third quarter in the Republic Bank Holiday Classic Wednesday night, Blue Devils Coach Daniel Brown didn't change his strategy or his lineup.Instead, he challenged his players' heart and desire."We looked up at the scoreboard and we were down 19, and I told them they were representing Henry Clay's tradition and pride, and they needed to play like that meant something to them."The message was received.The young Devils, playing their most inspired basketball of the season, rallied with a 26-5 run to take the lead, and they went on to beat Moore 77-73 in the tournament quarterfinals.Henry Clay sophomores Jordan Green, Christen Cunningham, Trey Grundy and Teddy Ware led the way.The 6-foot-4 Green, playing the best overall game of his career, had 26 points, 10 rebounds and defended Moore star MeKale McKay."Jordan Green played like an all-stater tonight," Brown said.
