Recruiting rumors, private debate, Mitchell rulings, numerous records, laundry list of championships, located near Cincinnati, scheduling etc.... seem to follow this team with such a rich storied tradition. They've been attacked on just about every front possible. Is this an isolated segment of folks or is this how they are truly perceived within the Commonwealth of Kentucky? I mean, can you imagine what the threads will be when the mighty Birds are eventually dethroned?

I think the Birds get 6 in a row next year. McCoy was probably the second best high school qb in NKY (didn't forget Pike, I said high school qb and while Pike has college potential, I think McCoy will be a more productive high school qb) and had to play WR this year to see the field (although he was a great LB as well his freshman year).
If the defense can just slow teams down, this train keeps rolling!

Doesn't matter what people think, we're the best damn team in Kentucky.
And when we win six in a row, people will quit comparing us to that Boyle County team that won 5 in a row in the early 2000s.

Reading many of the threads here that quickly devolve into "you recruit", "you're a private school", "you run up the score (though the first team is pulled in the second quarter)", blah blah blah as well as all of the nasty things that get posted in the comments after articles in the Enquirer, Ky Post, Lexington Herald Leader, and more rarely the Courier-Journal; I do think the team is hated and is not respected by a significant vocal group.
I end up feeling slightly paranoid in that whenever I have replied, in a civilized fashion without name calling and pointing out facts, to the posts for the newspaper websites, my posts are always deleted but the original, usually nasty post, remains. It is as if the papers take sides as well both in this aspect as well as their coverage.

If you are a fan of perennial winners, the haters always come out after you. People who do not even know where Ft Thomas is on the map of KY, will act llike they know everything there is to know about the program. As a fan of a perennial winner, you get tired of hearing all the false comments, but it is worth it. I do have to say that you do not see the NKY communities making all the accusations near as much as the rest of the state who is not in the area to actually see first hand what goes on. What people outside of NKY do not realize is that NKY is an area where people stay in the area where they were rasied. The majority of people stay tied to the school they went to and their parents went to, be it NCC, HHS, Cov Cath, Campbell Co., Beechwood, Boone Co., Lloyd, Scott, SK,WV, ect. People grew up cheering for "their" team from a young age and that is just where they are going to continue to send the next generation. Yes, there are some that change allegiance, but the majority do not. And yes I even have friends who I went to HHS with that have changed their allegiance to Beechwood and Cov Cath (we never did think they were the sharpest tools in the shed :biglmao

It would be awful if somehow the birds ended up some dumpster program 30 years from now. I would estimate that its going to keep rolling... tradition breeds excellence. Unless them mountain folk crack the case that we are recruiting kids from Russia.

Both, and all Bird fans should love it. I want to be the team that everyone talks about. If no one talks about you, then you are a nobody!
12-09-2011, 01:32 AM
Depends on who you talk to....I for one respect everything the program stands for. I remember people crying about the Mitchell rulings...It never mattered if Mitchell played or not, if it wasnt him making plays, someone else would have. Nothing but 100% respect from me.

Good teams will always have haters. Yankees, Lakers, Kentucky, it's kind of like an honor to be hated by many for winning.
With that being said, it's hard to deny that Highlands recruits when they get guys like Lorenzen (Taylor Mill), Stowers and Mitchell (Covington) and Nevels (Independence). It's hard to defend against running up the score when you win by 70, even if the intent wasn't to. When there is just a small bit of evidence that says a consistent winner isn't perfect, detractors will find it and expose it as much as they can.
My college coach said it best, "Haters respect and fear you, they're just too weak to admit it."

I think Trinity would have something to say about the above.
As to the other, that's a comparison that will happen because it's the achievement to compare it to.

Highlands is a great program will continue to dominate. It certainly isn't the team that most people on these boards don't like. It's the widelefts and widerights of the world that bother most people. They believe they are true fans and I'm sure love their team deeply, but they are not helping their teams image to others across the state.

I have seen a trend in the media as well with the announcing. They can't even hide the probable fact that they want to see the Birds fall flat on their faces. I remember after the Elder game, Cincinnati stations posted the score but then proceeded to show the lone highlights of the losing squad, Elder. Guess that comes with the territory.

i think everyone that knows anything respects the highlands program. they are usually one of the best teams in kentucky and thier kids and coaches show a lot of class. Some of u on birds fans on bgr are complete a holes that dont respect anyone. but the highlands program is top notch. youre not the best team in kentucky his year though. trinity would and did kill u an bowling geen would have been a great game as they had a great team this year. that bieng said highlands was hands down the best team in 4 a and a top 5 team in kentucky congrats on your season but you shouldnt be so arrogant for 2012 a lot of good teams out there next year
12-09-2011, 11:49 AM
Like em' or Hate em' you gotta respect em'. What they accomplish year in and year out is outstanding.. and usually the haters are the ones that simply cant compete on that level... i say "repect" em!

By my recollection, there are only three Highlands posters that tend to irritate everyone, including other Highlands fans. The two "wide bottoms" make it seem like more b/c they post so much in comparison to the other 100 or so Highlands posters on this site. To the credit of almost everyone else out there, they don't hold the self indulgent ramblings of these rogue posters against the rest of the Highlands crowd.
Thank you to all of the other fans who come to Highland's defense for being a class act. We try to be sportsmen when we visit other schools and we try to be good hosts when you visit Ft. Thomas. Can't wait until next August. Season should be fun b/c 4A is up for grabs amongst several teams even though Highlands will be considered the favorite.

Too much humility man. You have to tell things like they are.
I can tell you how to make Wideleft01 and I to stop...
And that's beat us.

I respect the hell out of them... but love when they lose to in-state schools.

I for one find WideLeft and WideRight hilarious. They're proud of the team they love, and the team backs up everything the both of them say, no matter who does or does not like it. I don't think that their is anything wrong with a little friendly trash talk at all, makes for a fun conversation. But, I've met Highlands fans, and I like them a lot. All the respect in the world for the program, root for them every year.

Respected and Villified. Most teams that are as dominant as they are usually are.

This thread was civil until this ***hole jacked it with his "thank you" political rhetoric and feminine "we try to please all posters" crap. You're right, Pecos, the season will be so much fun to watch, whippee. What a clown.

Oh yeah, we'll be comparing the achievement to Boyle's big run for 1 year. But after we win our sixth state title this time next year, we will be the ULTIMATE football dynasty!
