Towles; The best ever at Highlands or......
#1
Just at the right place at the right time? He assumed the role of starter after Bardo went down early in the 09' season, has been schooled by former NFL and Kentucky standout Jared Lorenzen, and had a tremendously talented Corp of receivers during his three year stint, but I can't help but wonder what kind of an impact these conditions would have had with the likes of Gino and Lorenzen themselves. I think Towles is good but right now he's number three behind these two...The next 4 yrs could possibly persuade me otherwise. He may just be re-writing UK's record books with the help of the record holder himself.:yikes:

I played with Lorenzen and Gino. I think that they all (including PT) are different QB types. Gino is the best passer IMO. Jared the best gunslinger, and PT is the field general.

As for surrounding talent JLo and Gino had some too. Randy Stegman (Miami) , Derek Smith (UK) and Bret Hamblen (UK) share most of the rec. records with a supporting cast of, Nate Birkley, Will Stinston, Noah Gibson (UK/Geotwn), Brian Ulbricht (Cornell), and Josh Hasson.

Its kinda a Farve (JL) vs Brees (GG) vs Brady (PT)
We can just say Jared is the Highlands All-'90s QB, Gino the All-'00s, and PT the All-'10s.

I think PT has the potential to take the position further than his predecessors.
Lorenzen was the most fun to watch though.

Jared and Gino faced and beat better competition.

Really, I do not remember them beating a Nationally ranked GCL team fro Ohio.

From a pure QB perspective Towles is the best. Gino was a great passer too. Lorenzen was great. You can make a case for any of the 3.

My rankings would be
1. Towles
2. Lorenzen
3. Gino

Anyone of the three.

You'd easily win the state title with any of them.

Was it Ben or Gino that came down to Mt. Vernon that one time...... Wink

Hefty Lefty lost to CovCath, Gino lost to Elder twice, so I pick Towles

I think this summed it up really well

Neither. That was in 2002, both had graduated long before that. Rockcastle County lost to HHS 41-9 in Gino's senior season (2000). Get a life, Troll!!

Towles has a chance to make an impact at UK in the SEC like Couch did. If he could make it to the NFL get drafted and have a 5+ year career, even as a backup, he will go down as the best. Basically the other 2 careers are over and Towles still has a chance to keep writting his story. I'm not a UK fan but wish the young man well, looking at UK QB situation and they just moved a WR there I think he has a chance to start from day 1.

If Rockcastle was even halfway decent, and beat the other sorry teams down that way, Towles would have got to come down there.

I believe it was Kyle James who was the Highlands QB the year that Rockcastle took Highlands to the woodshed.

The kid has game ill give him that much. Great Football player.

Alot of people are talking about Lorenzen's and Gino's college and pro time, and the question was who was "Highlands" best QB. I would put Gino at third best, Lorenzen second best and Towles at one. I watched almost every game of each of the above and they were all great HS players. Lorenzen was just so much bigger than all the defensive players that it was a blast to watch him just run over 3-4 defenders. He had a cannon for an arm, but feel Towles is just as strong and more accurate. Towles has high football IQ, and is the coolest HS QB when under pressure that I have seen. When the game is on the line, or pressure is in his face, I think his blood pressure accually drops instead of rising! Towles is so aware of the entire field and does not get rattled. I am surprised Bardo is not getting mentioned more. I might even put him ahead of Gino. If not for his injury, he might have got more looks from bigger schools. I know he is starting for Dayton, but not sure how he has been doing.

Gino is the stat leader in ALL passing stats at Highlands, by a lot. I think Pat would need to throw over 1000 yds in the state game to catch him in career yds. He only started 2 years to Towles 2.5. I know that Pat only plays 2 qrts a game, Gino did the same thing though.

When Gino played Elder they were the tops of the GCL. Highlands should have won but the refs didnt count an obvious interception run back by Highlands that would have won the game. Elder drove down to score the winning TD minutes later.

Nothing against Towles, but I think Gino is just as good if not better. Lorenzen was pretty good too. Gino didnt run nearly as much.

Bardo was a great kid and a good QB but is not at that level.

There goes your "State Wide" support for the Birdies,Genius. Go FS,Go BG or go anybody. I do however realize that most people at HHS are legit fans and nice people. Every fan base has one like you. The Bluebirds have an excellent program but guys like Albert here makes it difficult to appreciate your team.

I'll take any of the 3. But if I had to choose. I'd go with Towles, the kid is a winner and a warrior!
If you need any assistance or want to report a problem feel free to PM me and we will get it taken care of!  Thank you for choosing to be apart of the BGR community!

Highlands has done fairly well over the years without any statewide support. As a former Highlands athlete, I enjoyed being everyone's target. I liked that no one wanted us to win. It made hammering teams all the more enjoyable. It also made us work harder to stay on top. Keep on hatin!

Jared and Gino weren't?

That GCL team compared to the ones that Gino and Jared faced is like comparing Cov Cath now to Cov Cath in the late 90's. Those Elder teams that beat Highlands in 99 and 2000 are considered the best Elder teams ever including the two state chamionship teams from Elder. Had a kid playing safety that knocked out Brent Grover two years in a row. Brent Grover was not a small guy. Jared lost to a Moeller team who lost to the National Champion Cleveland St. Ignarius team and to say that Towels beat that Cincinnati St. X team is false as he wasn't asked to do anything but not lose the game in the second half. The Highlands defense won that game that was really not as close as the final score. I was there too. I don't miss many big games in our area.

Bardo was player of the game and played until the 4th quarter. If Bardo didn't get hurt Highlands was on the verge of scoring again. The game wasn't won by Bardo or the defense it was a total team effort. I wonder what Bardo's stats would have been if he had 2 and a half years playing QB?

Pretty amazing I think it's safe to say.

Yes. With Towles supporting cast of characters (team, coaches), he couldn't help but get better and better with each passing year. Bardo, I'm sure, would have been much more successful passing with an additional 2 yrs experience under center as would most anyone. Oh well, now we are left to ask ourselves how Donovan McCoy will step in to fill some big shoes, literally. It's a whole new dynamic in 2012 and I'm sure McCoy can't wait to step into the spotlight and shine.

I don't see how anyone can say that either of the other two are better quarterbacks than Lorenzen. Dude could just run around in the backfield, no one could bring him down, and then launch the ball 60 yards down field. I wasn't impressed at all with PT and Lorenzen's the best high school quarterback I've ever seen.

Maybe Lorenzen had a better supporting cast, but he would have made anyone good if they could just run a route and catch a ball because they had all day to get open and he could hit them anywhere on the field.

He could make any throw and could avoid rushers just because he was so big and impossible to bring down.

Might have lost to CovCath two years straight if I hadn't slipped and fell in the backfield on a fake punt in the '98 playoff game........... had a chance to be a superstar as a freshman against a nationally ranked team and I slipped and fell................... shameful.

Fritz. You got a great attitude. I don't know you personally, but have only heard positive things about you. We root for different teams, but I have a ton of respect for you.

Even if your fake punt goes for a TD in 98, we still drill ya!!
