The story of Belfry v. Central in the first two meetings has been turnovers. Central seems to do one thing really well and it has nothing to do with Ace Wales. They punish you for making mistakes, defensive speed turns a turnover into a sixer or good field position.
The first time these two teams met Belfry could have come out on top if not for the ill timed int at the end of the second half and a fumble when driving deep in Central territory.
Last year (round 2) Belfry turned the ball over way too many times. What many fail to look at is that last years team was young, inexperienced and was not supposed to be in Bowling Green by most predictions. They came on hard and had a wonderful run, but even during the regular season they were plagued by turnovers. It was one of the things that made their trip to Bowling Green so surprising last year.
This year the Pirates are not shell shocked by being in Bowling Green. This team is supposed to be there. 95% of the boys who will be starting this game played in last years game. The turnover bug last years team suffered is gone. The offense is better, the defense is better and they really want to erase last years embarrassing loss from the minds of many.
In the last two weeks Central has proven to be the Class of 3A. With a shutout of Mighty Bell Co. a team long proclaimed to be one of the only teams (Tilghman being the other) with a shot @ Central. Then they handled Ft. Campbell in much the same way. This 3A state title is the Yellowjackets title to lose. Anyone who debates that facts wearing blinders.
That being said, Belfry CAN win this game and there are a few pieces from the regular season that we can look at and say they can do it.
While I would love to see the Pirates upset the Jackets and bring home some more respect to go with some 3A hardware I would consider it a victory just to hang with Central. Maybe put a little fear in the Black and Yellow for a few quarters.
Some on here say that we Belfry fans are oblivious to who and what Central is, that is incorrect, we know full well who they are and what they can do, possibly better than most. This is the team who has denied us State title #3 on two separate occasions, they are always fast and dangerous and punishing with the turnovers. We know full well who the Yellow Jackets are and the ferocity they bring to the table.
We know that Central as far as numbers go are a solid 2-3 TD favorite over our Pirates. Ask Garrard Co. what a point spread means on game day because they showed in the Semis that a point spread don't mean ish when the game is being played. Garrard Co. (Hats off Lions) did everything that many us of knew they had to do to win. The two main points being score big, fast and gain a solid lead. In years past a 15 point deficit would have almost buried the Pirates, a team who could score quick as GC did 3 times would have almost put Belfry away. This isn't a Belfry team of years past, this is a special team at Belfry who has at least one more amazing year left in them.
We believe in our Pirates and many of us will until the final whistle is blown. We have been raised on the Legends of Bearmeat Vipperman and Dick Roddy, grown up with the success of Phillip Haywood and been a part of the Angry Red Pond Creek Pirate Nation for as long as any of us can remember. Our first taste of football for many has been on the cold fall nights at the old Vipperman Stadium with cars lined up and down US 119 to a packed house for a game that was likely to be a guaranteed Belfry victory.
We love football, we love Belfry and no one will tell us that we aren't good enough to beat anybody when we play 100% Belfry football it's just how we are.

- We can beat teams we are not supposed to beat (Ashland and it was supposed to be a high scoring affair)

- Score quick without the offense (Pikeville, opened the second half with an onslaught of points)
- Win tight games (Breathitt, outlasted the Bobcats to pull off a great win)
- Come from behind (Garrard Co., Down 15-0 against an explosive offense the never say due attitude of this team showed it can win at any cost.)

All the folks making a big deal out of the Garrard game are overlooking
the fact that they had already played the game to go to Bowling Green
when they snuck one past BC the previous week. A little let down was to
be expected. That being said, go ahead and send the trophy to Louisville.
Central wins this one by 3-4 scores.

Belfry did not sneak anything past BC, they simply walked right by them.:dontthink If BC would have lucked out and beat the Pirates, Garrard would have beat them just as the Pirates beat Breathitt. Garrard was better than Breathitt. I have no problem with the fact that you think Central is the better team than the Pirates, it is Central's title to lose.

I don't have much to add that hasn't been mentioned already.
Belfry has had several strengths that have allowed them to advance, which in this game are either neutralized or in the favor of Central.
-Central is as deep as Belfry, if not deeper.
-Central is as physical as Belfry, if not moreso
-Central can impose their will on the pace of the game.
-Scroggins is as good as any coach in the State when it comes to adjustments.
If one were to make a table showing 20 items and listing who has the advantage, the only column where Belfry would distinctly have the check mark in their favor would be on the Offensive and Defensive Lines, and even those are very slight advantages IMHO.
It is painfully obvious if both teams bring an equal performance to the game that the Pirates will lose this one, and probably by a few TD's.
The one thing that does give me hope is the fact we are still yet to see this still relatively young Belfry team play to their full potential and put together a perfect game on both sides of the ball. The Pirates have shown flashes of offensive brilliance, but haven't proven to be able to sustain it for 4 full Quarters. The Pirates haven't shown the form of the defense that stonewalled a very good Ashland team as well.
Belfry has proven that they can move the ball on the ground against Central in the previous two State Final meetings... what has killed Belfry has been turnovers (quick change points in particular), missed tackles on the stretch play, and the deep ball. I warned Bell County fans prior to their game that Central may very well e the most lethal team in Kentucky at turning your turnovers into points. In 2007 the Pick 6 before the Half was the turning point and cost Belfry the game. Last year, trailing 7-0 the Pirates fumbled in their own territory and Central promptly made it 14-0 on the very next play... trailing 21-0 the Pirates still had a pulse as they had drove into Central territory with a chance to cut the lead to 14 before the Half. The Pirates fumble..Central scoops...then returns it for a TD. Suddenly instead of trailing by 2 TD's at halftime the Pirates trailed by 4 TD's.
Protecting the football against the hard hitting Yellowjackets is easier said than done... but if the Pirates can do so... and can force Wales to be them with numerous 5-10 yard runs instead of 3 or 4 40-60 yard runs to where the clock moves quickly and the number of possessions are limited...the the Pirates have a chance.
All things considered I see Central beating Belfry similar to the Ft. Campbell game.
Is it against the rules to have David Jones put on the pads and lineup at HB this week to prepare the defense for Wales' strength and speed?

I jokingly had this same thought last night. Where could Belfry test themselves against this kind of speed and David instantly popped into my head. The real question is if this would be legal is David still in any condition to be a true help to the team now that he is a few years removed from his limited time with the Ravens.
Is David still an assistant? I had heard he was coaching D-backs at UPike.

Bell County and Belfry play alot alike on defense. Bell Co. held Central to 259 total yards. Wales had 135 yards on 19 carries. Bell Co. also had a few costly turnovers, one was a fumble returned 42 yards for a TD. Belfry is a much improved team from last year. I am really starting to get excited for the PIRATES. I hope everyone in Louisville keeps thinking that they don't stand a chance.

I will say Garrard caught Belfry off gaurd, but take nothing away from how good Garrard was. They play at an old field and my opinion was a better place than Brethitt by far. Garrard was a better coached more talented team than Brethitt and they have a QB better than pike central and Brethitt both cant believe how that team flew under the radar.Central will be tough but I think the game at Garrard prepares Belfry better than any other game this season.irateSho

You can tell me all day that they think they can but i like i said before they know there out guned and out matched. It is posts like this that make this board look like trash! You are talking about adolescents who have worked their tails off and you can't muster enough testicular fortitude to be classy about the way you post?
Win or lose, our community is proud of these boys and the way they handle themselves on and off the field.... no assinine post from you will change that!

KHSAA has posted probable starters and rosters:
A few notes:
- Both teams are going to be loaded again next year:
Belfry will return 7 starters on D and 6 starters on O, the Pirates return 32/44 players on their 2 Deep.
Central will return 8 starters on D, and 6 starters on O, the Yellowjackets return 30/44 players on their 2 Deep.
- Belfry actually has a considerable size advantage across the board.
The Pirates OL averages 6'0 245, Central averages 6'0 212 across their Line.
The Pirates DL averages 5'10 196, Central averages 5'10 179 across theirs.
The Pirate LB's and DB's average 5'11 192, Central goes 5'10 162.
The Pirate Skill Guys average 5'9 182, Central goes 5'9 159.
- It's obvious both teams would prefer to run left with their bigger bodies with more range.
The left side of the Yellowjacket line and their TE averages 6'3 228 whereas the right side averages 5'10 203.
The left side of the Belfry line and their TE averages 6'3 230 whereas the right side averages 5'10 268.
- Both team use an undersized, quicker D-line. In both cases the opposing OL has a massive size advantage. Belfry has 2 inches in height as well as a 66 LB average over the Yellowjackets in OL vs. DL. The Jackets have 2 inches and a 16 LB average over the Bucs.
- As listed, Belfry has 6 starters returning from last year's Finals on offense and 7 on defense.
- As listed, Central has 5 returning offensive starters and 4 on defense. With that said, they have an additional 3 guys who were listed as starters last year, who are on the roster again but not starting.
- KHSAA has Wales with 2785 rushing yards for the season for those tracking the record.
