absolutly not, whats your thoughts? Did any previous player experience this?
12-29-2005, 04:42 PM
I dont think it is right at all.. All players do what thewy can, no matter what happens its not like they would hurt their team on purpose therefore the coach shoyldnt grab or even touch a player because he did something wrong.

I don't agree with it, but once again another one of those things that shouldn't be made into a big deal unless they are actually hurting the student. I mean for instance, football is a contact sport, sometimes a coach needs to use a player to demonstrate.

In almost all cases I know, the coach is a techer or employed by the school board. Would you, as a parent, allow a teacher or other school board member to grab your child? I know I wouldn't allow or stand for someone grabbing my children. I think coaches should be on the same accountability as teachers.

What kind of thread is this? You may as well asked if players should be allowed to use firearms durring games. Coaches should not grab players bottom line. Everyone's opinion on this will be the same unless Bobby Knight has an account. They have to be able to have physical contact (The putting an arm around a player or even holding of the jersey when the conversation does not involve other players, but no physical contact on the skin) to effectivley coach a team.

I beg your pardon Matney's, nothing was mentioned in this thread about firearms or actions by players. the question is about coaches actions. Bobby Knight was known to be aggressive and throw chairs and intimidate young men ages 19-23, not 15-18 year olds.

I dont agree with it because if a coach grabs a player the player becomes scared or mad and that will affect the way he/she plays. If a coach wants to get a players attention, i do agree with getting right in their face.

In some cases its alright to grab a player
12-29-2005, 05:55 PM
depends, If the coach is just physically harming or maimin a student or athlete, never should be aloud. Or grabbing a jeresy or to demeonstrate (i.e Football) is ok, but as if it hurts a player in any way emotionally or physically, should not be aloud.
12-29-2005, 08:40 PM
I think the topic isn't clear enough to answer. If a player does something and the coach grabs him because the coach is mad, then no, it isn't alright to do. But if the same coach tells a player to check in, then when he is running by him, I don't see anything wrong with him grabbing him by the jersey or something to stop him for last second instructions.
12-29-2005, 09:12 PM
if a coach is angry at a player for messing up in a game or practice nothing physical should ever be done. But like BasketBallonlyfan said if its a coach grabbing a player by the front of a jersey pulling him up and getting him in the game and giving him some last second instructions. thats ok because its doing nothing to hurt the player but to give him playign time lol.

This is what's wrong with how the game is played and how our kids are growing up in. If you touch a player or even say something to hurt his feelings, that child's parent wants to get you fired. You go back to the 60's, 70's, 80's and early 90's, coaches would grab players and say things, but you never thought anything about it. I had a coach grab me several times and he was a very successful coach. I would of run thru a wall for that man. Listen to other stories from that time and they will tell you the samething. Parents today let their kids get away with to much and make it easy for them. I'm myself a parent and I would love for my son to play for Bobby Knight in high school or at the college level. Listen to his past players and 98% love him.

No way should he be allowed to grab or even "cuss" them as has been done a lot in the past. He should be held accountable for his actions, he is a teacher and i would never allow one to grab my kid.
12-29-2005, 09:43 PM
No, this is not wise on the coaches part. It needs to be reported. What coaches do this?
12-29-2005, 09:56 PM
It happened to me alot, lol I didn't see it as horrible wrong or anything just grabbed by my arm to try and get me to listen. It didn't work only made me mad and made me not want to do what I was told. I don't think it is terrible wrong to grab a player if your doing it the right way. Now that I look back on it the times it happened to me in basketball it was for my own good probably the only way she knew to get me to pay attention. As for the one time it happened in softball I still wish I would of punched her.

This is a topic for trouble making parents and Mommies and Daddies who don't like it when junior is visibly told that he is wrong. Seriously--what kind of topic is this!
Every decent coach in his right mind knows that there is a that CAN NOT be crossed. But there are times when a coach has a right to get a kids attention. But a tug on the jersey helps at times. Should that be done in a derrogatory way--NEVER! But there are not a lot of coaches who do that to begin with.
Also, this just goes to show that basketball tends to be a cry baby sport (meaning--Mommy and Daddy think that they should be able to control everything that a coach does).
You should be complaining more about how basketball coaches think that can yell and scream like a bunch of 4 year olds. (And they often do they directly to a kid as opposed to being constructive). That is a lot worse than grabbing a players arm when he isn't paying attention.

No one ever mentioned grabbing a jersey, it said grabbing a player. The jersey is not physically grabbing unless he grabs it and pulls the kid around. An arm or neck or is physically grabbing and no coach should be allowed to do that under any cir***stances.
12-30-2005, 01:12 AM
I dont know of any coaches that would grab a player like that.
12-30-2005, 01:40 PM
Grab - no, reach out and take them by the arm or touch them on the shoulder in order to get their attention yes.
Abuse is abuse. Bobby Knight is a great example of this.

I totally agree w/ a coach grabbing a kid by the jersey and pulling him over to give a lil' insight to mistakes made. I've also seen coaches grab kids to put them in the game. I think if they're going to chew the kid out or something of that nature the most a coach should go when grabbing a kid would to be grab the jersey not the actual player.

Please try and pay attention:
Grab does not = Abuse

I have noticed several threads about coaching and things they should not do such as grabbing and playing rich kids. First of all I would like to say this is how much times have changed. Parents and kids always want to blame a coach or a teammate. I agree coaches should not grab a player in anger but I want to add that players and parents should respect coaches more than they do. Coach Martin has seen some rough times over the past few years, mostly from parents. Should players be allowed to talk back to coaches,NO but those same players talk back to their own parents so it doesn't matter. What ever happened to "Do what your coach tells you, work hard in practice, respect your elders and always show spotmanship. It is the I generation, bottom line:Sad04:

That may be the best post that I have ever read in the basketball forum . . . .

I must say that I don't always agree with you DTA. But your smart -- in this subject. You're right. Basketball is basketball and it shouldn't be anything else. Just Basketball. No parents, no money, no talking behind the others back, no being two-faced. It's Basketball. it's for the kids. it's for THE TEAM, NOT ONE PLAYER -- and that's how it should stay. You hit the Jackpot with this one DTA, I'm proud.

Thanks blackcat and hillbilly. I just get so annoyed hearing players and parents complain. It is a privelege to represent a school in sports not a given thing. If kids want to play for dad get an AAU team or if you want to play with no guidance then do what every old school player used to do.............play dirt court daily. My advice is Shut up and play:Nodding:

No This Is Not Rght At All And Should Be Stopped

No way should a coach grab a player or use profanity towards his or her players....unless its in a respectable manner to talk to them about a mistake they made and to make it right the next time....but never from a negative standpoint
01-03-2006, 12:13 AM
No way, I think this is unacceptable. I think if a coach does he should be given a suspension, or be fired. Something happen to him to send the message.

I have been grabbed by my jersey in a middle school game, however it was in the locker room and not in front of fans so it did not embarass me. Got a little fired up though but it did not bother me like i thought i would. My coach always gave me respect and he may "knock me down" from time to time but he always built me back up. He respected me so I respected him. I know that my game improved a WHOLE lot after half time.

You hit the nail right on the thumb. Good post.
Johnson Central is having quit a pitty party and there coach is winning. Give me a break.
Go out hard, bust your butt in practice and on the court when you do get in, support the coach and the team, and play to win. Simple as it gets.
And one more root your team mates on. Life is not about you.
