Belfry Coach Philip Haywood Honored
#1

GOODY, Ky. -- Pond Creek Nation can now refer to the gridiron at Cam Stadium as Haywood Field in honor of head coach Phillip Haywood. The Pike County Board of Education met Oct. 18 and unanimously voted for the title.

Haywood tied the record for most wins in the state with last week's victory over Lawrence County.

The Pirates travel to Pike Central Oct. 21 and should the Bucs remain undefeated, Haywood will become the winningest coach in the Bluegrass surpassing UPike's head football coach Dudley Hilton and retired coach Bob Schneider.

With the W over Lawrence County, Haywood holds a record of 345 wins and 119 losses.

Belfry has been known throughout the state as a football school for many years but even with all of its success, it was Coach Haywood that brought the first title to the school in 2003.

Coach Haywood has been at the helm of Belfry since 1984. In his 27 years at Belfry High School, he has won 265 games and lost 87.

Before coming to Pond Creek, Haywood was head coach at Prestonsburg High School for nine years.

The motion to name the field in his honor was brought before the board by member and BHS alumni Dr. Chuck Johnson.

Johnson explained to the BOE that Belfry football head coach Phillip Haywood has led the Pirates to state championships in Class 2A in 2003 and 2004; state runner-up in Class 2A in 1985 and 1986 and Class 3A in 2007 and 2010.

The first football squad for Belfry was organized in in 1924. Elbert Tye became the initial coach for the Bucs. During WWII, there were not enough boys to field a team and Belfry went without a squad until after the war.

It was John Moricle in 1950 from Williamson that began the winning tradition the Pirates take for granted now. Moricle was followed by Guy Patterson, Irvin Wilson, Albert Vipperman, Paul Dotson and Dick Roddy. Coach Haywood wore the red and white after Roddy retired.

Since the beginning, several big names have worn the uniform including Rick Kestner, James Ramey and, under Coach Haywood, David Jones.

Jones is the defensive backs coach under Dudley Hilton at UPike and says Haywood is the biggest part of his success.

"He has taught me to be a better man," said Jones. The most important thing I learned from Coach Haywood is respecting my peers and always watch what I do or say in public. You never know who is looking up to you."

"It was way overdue," Jones said of naming the field after the famous coach. "If I had a country I would name it after him because people really don't understand what kind of great person he is"

"But, you would never hear him say it was well overdue," said Jones. "All he wants to do is win games and win games for his players and coaches."

BOE Chairman Frank McGuire said he doesn't typically agree with naming a field after a living being, however, with the record of most wins within reach, he gave his nod to naming the field after the long-time successful coach.

Superintendent, Roger Wagner also gave his assent saying it was well deserved.

"We could plug the game Friday night," he said of the potential record breaking contest between Pike Central and Belfry High School. "It could be a night Coach Haywood breaks the record."

Haywood and the Pirates take their undefeated 8-0 record to Pike Central for a huge distract battle with the Hawks. The winner will be ranked first in District 8 class 3A.

While some would rather see the beloved coach break the record on Haywood Field, a huge crowd is expected from Pond Creek to witness the potential record breaking event and will celebrate a win anywhere.

Haywood is the man, and will be the greatest coach to ever go down in Kentucky high school football! A pure role model!!

Haywood is a great man, a great coach and a living ICON. I'm honored to say that I was able to play for such a great general as Coach Haywood. He is THE class act and tomorrow night he takes over the top spot as Kentucky's all time winningest high school football coach and there is no other place, other than at home, that I would rather see him take over the record than Pike Central.

The true question is will PCC regard haywood with respect if he wins?

Congratulations to Coach Haywood on the accomplishments that he has made so far in Ky. high school football.. He is 1 of the best if not the best high school coaches in the state of Ky. He is not only a great high school coach,he is also an all around great person when not on the football field coaching. If I had a son that was going to play football I would surely want him to have Coach Haywood as his coach.. Good Luck to Coach Haywood and all the Belfry Pirate's tonight, I hope you all win the District Championship tonight against Pike Central and also a victory would break the record for all time wins by a high school coach in the State of Ky...I'm hoping for a victory tonight for the Belfry Pirate's and also hope that its an injury free game for both teams.....

Just what has Dudley Hilton done that is so good at Pikeville?

I think you mean Hillard Howard. Dudley Hilton has only been at UPike 6 games, and before that was an icon on Log Mountain. And, for the record, this thread is about Haywood. Let's save the comparisons for what Hillard did with what he had versus Haywood for another thread. Irregardless of my distaste for Belfry, I very much respect what they have accomplished, and what Haywood has accomplished. Let's not let comments on this thread detract from the congratulations he deserves here. Either congratulate him here, or if you don't think he deserves it, hold your tongue and say something on another thread instead.

Well deserved IMO. Coach has certainly produced some excellent results. I think the thing he should be most recognized for is just how well he (and his staff) have coached kids up over the years. Each year, quality players graduate and are replaced by the next wave.

Go Coach.

Great coach, great tradition; he deserves all the accolades he receives.

IMO, no. Chapman is a poor character individual with a great football mind. He is always rude to the media, does not follow up on his graduated guys, and hates Belfry (not just on a rival level). I wouldn't be surprised if he is off the field before the game is over if it is well in hand.

Cograulations coach! It couldnt happen to a better man.

It doesn't matter what Chapman does, if Coach Haywood breaks the record tonight, the Pirate Faithful will be honoring him and celebrating enough for everyone!!

Who cares what PCC does we all know what Haywood means to our kids and us as fans we could never ask anymore from the man. Congrats Haywood the pondcreek nation loves what you have done, and you deserve your name to be at the school and on the field forever!

It will be broken even if Haywood sticks around longer.
Mueller, Beatty will break it easily if they stay around.
Glaser is not going anywhere and he not far at all away from Haywood and has 7 less years coaching.

Congrats to Haywood on the record, very awesome honor to coach for that long in today's society.

What I find most impressive about Coach Haywood is that when he says he really doesn't care about the record "I believe him." He coaches for the right reasons and that's for the kids that he coaches and his love of the game. Sure it's impressive to own the record but what's more impressive to me the is the huge number of people that he has impacted in a positive way over the years. I have never heard another coach, player, parent have a negative thing to say about the man and that's unreal in these times of "If he's not with us he's against" attitudes. In these days and times our kids need more or even just one good role model to help turn them into men and Coach Haywood is that for sure. I am from Letcher County and do not follow Belfry football closely but when I hear the word "COACH" the first name that comes to mind for me is Phillip Haywood. Congrats on taking over the record whether it be tonight or next week and you are surely deserving of the honor of having the field named after you.

Well deserved and a true sportsman and coaches coach it shows in the type of student athlete he produces both on the field and off. Best of wishes from all at ER hope to see you on the sideline for many more years. GREAT COACH AND GENTLEMAN...
