Lets talk tradition!
#1
Over the years that i have played high school football i have never seen so many schools with so much school spirit and tradition, even as a little kid. I mean just stepping off the bus at some of those places would just give you chills. i know most of you know what im talking about.

So what schools here in Eastern KY do you think has the most school spirit, and tradition. and the best fan base like no other.

i have a few, i just wanna know your opinions.

i've really never been to Ashland. i bet it is awesome, i will tell you though Breathitt County IMO has the best atmosphere around

You wanna talk Tradition. One team comes to mind in the mountains. Phillip Haywood and the BELFRY PIRATES!.......

i think so too, they are going to lose a lot after this year, but over time im sure they will get better and better. They just need to continue the little league programs and keep kids interested so hopefully they will play in high school when they get there. They need a new stadium badly though, the one they have now IMO is pretty much a middle school stadium and not fit for the lil packers over there in little league. I hate to say this but as long as pcc continues to focus more on basketball then their football program will never be nothing more then average, besides this years team i got a feeling this is the bunch thats gonna do something special for us.

It is a pretty cool setting for a football game. Signs all around. I like how it sits down in a bowl

I know these are not mt schools, but Danville vs boyle co is the most intense rivalery that I have seen in KY. The whole town is painted up an there is at least 3-4 thousand fans there. Especially when both teams are ranked at the top.
#12
Highlands tops it in NKY with Beechwood and Newport Catholic next. Trinity and St. X in Louisville.
#13
Paintsville Used to have a awesome atmosphere now it is so so. I gotta say P-Burg does good. But no one touches Belfry from those 90's unis they wear to the white helmets with the jolly rodger on em to that monstrosity they play in they have an amazing program.

I'll give respect to Pburg, Breathitt, Bell County, Russell, and Ashland.

But... from tailgating to Tunnel Time to "Welcome To The Valley" to "Another Pirate Touchdown" to the never changing jerseys to the big game red pants to Haywood's suit and tie... Belfry takes "tradition" to a whole new level.

No resprect for your city cousins right down the road who have won 3 state champsionships? I think that's the bottom line on tradition. Belfry takes "tradition" to a whole new level? Are you serious? A few on here are waaaay out of control haha.

Sorry Jetpilot, but this thread isn't about just winning State Championships! It's about tradition!! Having the same coach, at the same school, in the same suit and tie, calling almost the exact same plays for the past 20+ years! The boys wearing the same uniforms, helmets, playing the same songs in the locker room! The fans who pack the stadium every friday night, no matter if it's a home game or an away game! It's still hearing Mr. Steve Phillips voice in your head saying "For another Pirate Touchdown!" Knowing that whether it be Vipperman Stadium or CAM Stadium, it's still Death Valley to the fans. Having people from as far away as California, Oregon, Texas, etc. begging to know what radio station is carrying the Belfry game on the internet so they can hear the game and feel like they are back in their hometown. Watching the little boys run on the field during tunnel time to get a good place in front of the line just so they can get to slap the players hands as they run through and then seeing the smiles on their faces when it happens. And the best thing about tradition at Belfry is...Once a Pirate, Always A Pirate!!! That is tradition!!

IMO, Highlands, Ashland, Pikeville, Belfry, and Corbin take the cake on tradition. I'm only counting the places I've been to. Now, back in the day, Cumberland and Pineville were GREAT places to go for games if you were a football purist. Just awesome atmospheres. Can't leave out Middlesboro either. Corbin is so steeped with family involvement over the years in their program, it is unreal.

But if you are talking just pure state champs, finals appearances, etc, Pikeville with their FOUR state titles (don't forget 1955 because hey, if Elkhorn can claim a media voted title, so can we), 3 state runners up, too many regional championships to count, home of the 2nd longest running bowl game in Kentucky, etc., has to be considered. Belfry is close second in the mountains for that. BUT the Pikeville atmosphere has slipped of late. Nowhere close to being as rowdy as it used to be. Belfry is GREAT, with outstanding food, stadium, fans, music, etc. In that regard only, they top Pikeville in my mind. So I put them 1 and 1A, and let others debate which one is which one.

A little off topic and out of state but Gate City turns out like nothing I've ever seen for a school thier size. The filled their side and half of ours and was rowdy as hell until the realization set in......

Belfry Pirates!

I agree with PHS forever!!! Pike does have the state titles Pilot, but it is soooo much more. It is the following, the atmosphere, the wins, the ambience, the chill bumps, the Pond Creek Nation which would rival most fanbases. Pikeville does not have that now...Even when they did have the great teams, save one year, Belfry was still right there with them. I do not consider Ashland a mountain team, but for 80 plus years at Belfry and longer than that at Ashland, football has been king. I hope it gets back there at Pikeville too, but tradition is so much more than trophies...It is consistency and Haywood is the King of that too!!!!
#23
Only Belfry gets chill bumps now haha...you guys are funny. I won't trade our state championships over and above Belfry's for your PA guy, chill bumps, WV license plates, and two hot dog grillers in the parking lot to be named later.

Seriously, Belfry fans are getting a little out there. Belfry is not the king of football tradition in KY, or in the mountains. Nice run, nice tradition...but get real, not on the pinnacle overlooking all others.

And EKU '05 not mentioning Pikeville in teams' tradition he respects tells me that some Belfry fans don't have a good handle on what tradition is.:devilflam

No one ever said they were, but Pikeville relies way too much on their titles for their tradition and a lot of people feel that way...Put 1987 aside...because i agree whole heartedly that is holy high school football turf...but their other teams were good enough to win the title but not legendary...They had to beat Harrodsburg and Trigg County...now come on!!!...I have the utmost respect for PHS, but if Belfry, in the years they havent won the title but had a chance, had to go against those teams, then you wouldn't have a leg to stand on because we would have so much hardware on Pond Creek that you would get blinded driving by the school!!! The competition in the old AAA was so tough. Now a days in most of the classes you may have to be better than 5 or 6 teams to get a shot...1988, Belfry almost beats Hackney, Deramus, and the boys and then in 1989 they do get the Panthers at Pond Creek. Let's give credit to both programs for what they have accomplished, but competition year in and year out plays a big role and Pikeville, though having played their share of really good teams, has mopped up, with average Panther teams, on weak competition, and then been exposed come playoff time. And to show some objectivity, Belfry was not real good in most of the decade of the 90's. They had 2-3 really solid teams and the others were average by their standards.

LOL!!! Next you are going to tell me that when you put Pikeville's 3 state championship trophies next to Belfry's 2, Belfry's 2 looks more impressive!
Any team that wins a state championship is legendary.

Belfry beat Owensboro Catholic who lost 5 games that year and gave up 300 points, beat Elizabethtown for their other championship. Real football powerhouses there, but if I scoffed at that you would tell me I am crazy, like I'm telling you you are crazy haha....

I agree, if you would read my post...I said the teams that Belfry has faced when they have lost....In 1979, Belfry went against Franklin Simpson with two UK signees when Simpson was in the midst of back to back AAA titles...In 1985, Tilghman had multiple division one signees. Central has had a bunch during their great run...Yes, championships are championships, and I put a whole lot of weight on Pikeville's 3 straight and the fact they did it first in Ky. is huge IMO...But If Belfry would have to go against that type of competition for state every year...You cannot honestly sit there and say they wouldn't have many more than Pikeville...
