Figured this might be fun, Name a coach and 10-15 players that you think would be on an all-time all-mountain team.

Not sure about the coach... so many good ones to pick from... but players....
King Kelly Coleman (Wayland)
Grady Wallace (Betsy Layne)
Dan Hall (Betsy Layne)
Richie Farmer (Clay County)
John Phelfry (Paintsville)
JR Van Hoose (Paintsville)
Keith May (Virgie)... cant remember if this was his name or not!
Elisha Justice (Shelby Valley)
Ervin Stepp (Phelphs)
Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head... I'm sure with schools like Perry Central, Knott Central and even some of the schools up north, people will be able to add names to this with ease. Also, who was the star player at Carr Creek back when they beat Wayland in the state championship while Kelly Coleman was playing?

Star player from Carr Crekk was Jim Calhoun, he played College ball at Cinncinati with Oscar Robertson. Hope that helped ya.

Or Hazard.. I'd say with those 33 regional championships Hazard could find at-least 1 player..

Carr Creek didn't beat Wayland in the state championship, they beat them in the semifinals. The person who hit that shot was Freddie Maggard, not Jim Calhoun. Calhoun was one of the stars on that team.

Good list, but has to have these two added...
Glen Combs from Carr Creek has to be on there. Va Tech in college. Was drafted in the NBA by San Diego in 1968. Played in the old ABA for several years.
Frank Selvy, from Corbin, played college at Furman. First pick of 1958 NBA draft. Played 10 years in NBA.
08-17-2011, 03:03 PM
Grady Wallace from Betsy Layne was a high school and college All American... be kind of hard not to say he was one of the 10 best to come from the mountains.

Charles Thomas from Harlan has to be on the team. Kentucky Mr. Basketball. Played in a Final Four. Is somewhere 4th maybe 5th all time points scored in Kentucky.

One player that no one remembers is Bobby Slusher who graduated from Lone Jack in 1957. Slusher scored at will in high school. He once scored 83 points in a game. Slusher played 1 year for Adolf Rupp at UK and did great until being dismissed from the team for stealing. People that saw Slusher play in high school and collage tell me Slusher easily had NBA talent if he had had his head in the right place.

I'm sorry folks but Justice does not belong on these list. He might make the 25 to 50 list, but no way top 25 player all time. He's way down the list IMO.

Herbie Stamper is probably the best pure shooter to come out of the 14th region in the last 40 years.

Phil Cox was a Mr. Basketball and four-year starter at Vandy. He was a Mr. Basketball one year after Stepp.
Nick Sanford was a starter on the 1986 Kentucky All-Star team and was a four-time All American at LMU.
Ask Bobby Keith if these two guys belong on a top 15 list in the mountains.

I am a little surprised there is no mention of Jerry Bird. He was a star at UK and played briefly for the Lakers and Knicks in the NBA.

fairweatherfan Wrote:I would add Bob Talent Maytown, or one of his brothers not sure which one was best.Either Bob or Pat. Bob averaged 28+ ppg after transferring from UK to George Washington his senior year. Pat averaged 20+ ppg at George Washington during his three years there and is in the school's Hall of Fame.
Howard Wallen is another often forgotten guard who is among the best ever to play in the mountains. He was a three-year starter at Morehead who broke the school's career assists record (pre-freshman eligibility) and still ranks number 3 on the all-time career assists list.
Charlie Osborne, who played at Flat Gap, ranks second second on the KHSAA all-time scoring record behind King Kelly Colemen. Osborne was a three year starter for Western Kentucky and played briefly in the NBA.
Another Johnson Countian who deserves mention is Donnis Butcher, who played for Meade Memorial. Butcher played five seasons in the NBA.
I agree with others who commented on Elisha Justice. He was a great high school point guard but there have been many other better Mountain guards over the years.
