Signability, I think, became an issue with Spalding. Spalding is an excellent student and has a large scholarship to college. With what I heard, I think the amount that Spalding was asking for as a signing bonus dropped him down in the draft. He was a projected top ten rounder by different sources. In one interview, Spalding is quoted as saying he got a call from a team in the fifth round asking if he would take slot money. The Boston Red Sox ended up drafting him in the 29th round.

This was the exact same scenario for Chandler Shepherd. Shep was also contacted in rounds 5 and 6 by the Royals and the Diamondbacks.
