Which teams in the state do YOU believe will have a turnaround season, and why?
06-03-2011, 02:30 AM
Shelby County:
Last year the new shelby county school, Martha Layne Collins, drained Shelby of all its older talent almost. Last year the rockets were forced to use younger players which have gained a lot of experience because of it. I think they will turn it around because all they have to do is win 2 games and they are twice as good as they were last year.

Estill County
They went 5-6 last year. They've done what people said they wouldn't do past several years. They Return Most of there line which are big and very strong. They Return 2 Very Good RB's plus have a very talented 8th Grade Class Coming in, including a RB who averaged 4 TD's a game in Middle School, they also get a very talented QB who can throw the ball extremely well has a very pretty spiral to it and is very fast with his legs. They'll be better than what people will expect them to be. This is the best Chance for Estill to win it's very 1st ever Football District Title in School History

Every team with a bad record will say it is them, and usually I just ignore it. However, Rockcastle County WILL have a turn-around season. The past two seasons they were 5-7 and 4-7 respectively.
Rockcastle only lost 6 seniors, I believe. All they lost was 1 LB/FB, a seldom used TE, and a couple of rarely used players. I believe they return the entire line, stand-out RB Clark Rowe.
Basically, if Rockcastle doesn't have a winning record and a VERY good shot at winning their district for the first time in YEARS, they may not win for a long time and Coach Parkey may go packing.

LWC, I'm gonna agree with you, I do believe Rock will have a turnaround. The District can go to either Rock, Clay or Knox but since I have several friends on here that are from/Cheer for Rock, I'll take your all's Rockets to win that district.
I believe they'll beat Sheldon Clark, Frankfort, Perry County Central, Russell County, Knox Central, Clay County and Montgomery County. I'm iffy about the others, yes Rock has beaten my Engineers in the past but I know I'm excited to see that game and I've heard that Estill is looking forward and pretty excited about playing the Rockets. Rock may win but I believe it will be closer than most think. LWC, Papa Grit, Former, I wish you all and your Rockets the best on the upcoming season
Seems as if Rock and Estill are starting to play each other again in different sports, Football, Boys/Girls Basketball, Baseball and Softball played Rock in a tournament this past season. I'd like to see this continue in every sport
Rock lost 1 WR/DB, FB/LB, TE/LB, 2 OL/DL, 1 OG/DT
Now Rock will take a hit after this season as they will be losing 15 Juniors that will be Seniors this coming year.
vs. Sheldon Clark
Rock 2-0
vs. Frankfort
dating back to 1998, Rock and Frankfort have never played
vs. Whitley County
Rock 3-3
vs. Estill County
Rock 5-0
vs. Pulaski County
Rock 1-2
vs. Perry County Central
Rock 6-0
vs. Russell County
dating back to 1998, Rock and Russell never played
vs. Knox Central
Rock 8-4
vs. Clay County
Rock 4-0
vs. Montgomery County

Nice insight. The thing about the linemen is I have NO idea whether or not they started. This isn't like losing a Robbins, Leger, Durham, French, etc...

Now that you would have to ask either papagrits or former, I'm sure they'd have some insights on that

I also think they will have a much better year this year. They have some young talent that gained a lot of experience last year against a very tough schedule.

I believe paintsville will have a good season this year and possibly set themselves up for a bright future.

I'd say they can beat LaRue and Henry County. Most of their other games could be a toss, except I don't think they'll be able to beat Anderson or Oldham. So the opportunity for improvement is definitely there but there are no guarantees.

I agree with you paintsvilletigerfan. I think that paintsville will begin to turn it around in the next couple of years. If my memory serves me correctly, the Tiger's return a large class of either freshmen or sophomores. That group of kids could be the building block that Paintsville needs to start on thier way. It is going to be the coaches task to get all he can out of those kids. Good luck to the Tigers.

The only one of those teams I have a strong feeling about them beaing is bullit central, since they lost something like 16 seniors. And I don't see them beating Anderson, Oldham, or Collins.

Looking at Franklin Co. having a good year, alot of transfers, as well as a BIG turnaround for Western Hills, have a strong senior class with alot to prove, , hard working gritty bunch saw them @ their strong man competition, beating 6A schools , we will see how much they got , not real big but very strong, even the backs , heard they have a few lineman benching well over 300 pounds, Frankfort high will always have speed and will have a break-thru in regional , I think, not real sure....

Morgan County.
New coaching staff took over a program that was 1-10 and 0-11. First year, playing freshman was 2-9, 2nd year(last year) playing sophs were 5-6. Return 9 juniors on both sides off the ball.Running backs Joe Holbrook and Cody Thornsberry are both legit 4.5 40 guys. Morgan returns almost the entire team for the next 2 years.

Estill should have a good chance to do that. DO NOT overlook Powell if they're in your district. They have everybody back but their qb Hale who didn't play the 2nd half of the season last year is the key. If he plays this season, he is their best player, he makes their belly offense go. When he left the team midway through the season last year, it hurt them big time. I don't think they won another game after Hale left, but I could be wrong. If he plays Powell could have the best team they have ever had. I know both their running backs are back. Taulbee is very good and Jones is fast. Qb Hale playing or not is the key for them. Just saying..... I do look for Estill to have a great shot to win their district this season though.

That could be farther from the truth. Powell won 6 games last season, and Hale only played Qb for one third of the games he played in. They won 3 games after he quit. Garrard County will be very tough.

Rockcastle lost John Saylor at Halfback/LB, Dillon Thacker at G/DT, Luke Allen at TE and Corey Baker at CB. These were the most consistent starters. Also, Jon Miller who was on special teams. They should be in pretty good shape this next season I think. They will, of course, miss a couple of these guys considerably this next season. We'll see as you never know. Hopefully they will find the chemistry. I've been impressed with the way some of the young guys are looking coming out of the weight room Good luck to your engineers this season SK!

I think Morgan had 4 seniors but only 2 started which was Curd and Flannery.
All of the above are returning this season. Plus add part time starter as a freshman last year linebacker Austin Arnett. Morgan basically will return it's core for the next 2 years. Alot of juniors that have started since they were freshmen.

Not sure if they'll have the biggest turnaround in the State but for only going into it's 4th season of football the table may be set for some big things at Cooper High School. Dropping down to 5A and a much formidable schedule will help.

Conner will make some noise also with a young gun QB in Drew Barker who is a Sophmore with a strong arm and is already getting looks by UK and other big schools. There issue will be on defense which is the same place they struggled last year.

I look for Letcher Central to have a turnaround from last season.
