What is the rule on playing up?
#1
I just wander what the rule is. Is it cut and dry or unclear?

What do you mean playing up? There is no such thing as playing up, a High School student athlete is eligible to play at any level with the exception of sophomore-senior playing a registered Freshman sport, or a Senior playing below varsity.

If you mean a Middle School athlete playing HS sports, there is no restriction from KHSAA.

In both of these instances, there are school guidelines. i.e. many schools will not allow middle-school athletes compete on HS teams. But there is no state rule on it.

I think the individual schools make their own rules on it.
Most of them have the kids choose to either play middle school or high school, not both.
But I've see instances where the kids play both.

I think its the local board of education decision

The only stipulation I know of is that kids can't play high school in the year that they hold back in middle school. Other than that, I don't know of any other restrictions.

The answer would be maybe
From KHSAA
Bylaw 4 Sec 3) Eligibility for Participation While Enrolled Below Grade 9
A pupil in grades 4-8 may play on the high school team if that
participation is not in conflict with Section (2) above, and the time
so played shall not be counted on the eight (8) semester limit.
EXCEPTION: A student below grade nine (9) may not participate
on the varsity team in contests in the sports of football or soccer,
and a student enrolled below grade seven (7) may not participate
on the varsity level in wrestling. The provisions of this restriction
shall not apply to non-varsity teams participating in these sports.

IN other words you can't play up in football or soccer and only after 7th grade for wrestling but you may play up for all other sports

DortonWildcat is correct that the exception is that if a kid is repeating a grade for any reason he cannot play high school during the second year in that grade regardless if he played the first year or not.

I heard that 8th graders can play JV as long as no juniors are on the field in football. My sophomore year we had a JV game at Morgan County and they asked if we had any juniors playing JV because they said that as long as that junior was on the field, that they couldn't play their 8th graders.

yes

There is no KHSAA restriction of a high school senior playing on a JV team. I don't know what coach would do this, but they can.
#13
If the kid is good, enough let them play
#14
Sheldon Clark has a 6th grader playing Varsity!!!!

You can not play football or soccer as and 8th grader on the high school level.
