I spoke to a coach personally today who is interested in the Lawrence job if it is truly open, not just on paper. He has had more success then any of the above mentioned. His personality would be a perfect fit at Lawrence county.

I really hope Coach Burchett get's it. Great guy and a great coach. Lawrence County wouldn't miss a beat and he would add to what Salmons accomplished over the past couple seasons. I didn't believe he wouldn't be interested because I know Burchett and he always liked it in Lawrence County. Lawrence County wouldn't have to worry about him leaving in 2-3 seasons either.

Does Powell county know how excited he is???

Burchett did a good job at Powell BUT HE DID NOT TURN THE PROGRAM AROUND.....Mike Whitaker did...:closed:

Why? If he's interested then he should be very much in this discussion.

I'd love to see Coach Burchett become the head man at LC and keep Coach Cecil on as D-Coordinator. Bring Alan Short in to work with the QB's.

Cecil over the two anyday

From those stats its no wonder they are looking for jobs. Cecil best choice by far out of this group.

I think they are two coaches that will be down today looking at the school that will be added to the short list.

Copley looks like the best choice IMO.
Cecil- .708 win %
Copley- .750 win %
Burchett- .400 win %
AND Copley is the only one with a district championship and region runner up. Copley is the best choice if you go by numbers. Cecil has never had a winning season.
01-24-2011, 01:10 PM
Based off of looking at each coaches statistics neither one really stick out real good to me. If i had to choose, i would still choose cecil. Although it doesn't look like any of the staff that he has worked with the past few years will be there no matter who the coach is. Blake Preece quit, Altobello going to Midland, and I guess announced today that Skinner is going somewhere around Lexington to coach.

Need to do your math again. Can not have a 70% win percentage if you do not have a winning record.

I was going to say the same thing, I teach math at a high school and a 17-24 overall record isn't 70% winning percentage. Take your wins and divide it by the total number of games coached in and that will give you the overall winning percentage. 41.4%

What about Aaron Stepp, he is from Sheldon Clark, has family back that way, has been far more successful than the others mentioned and knows football. Has a hardcore mentality and could be great for Lawerence in my opinion.

Is that Orville Stepps son by chance? If so, seems like there was an article about him wanting to come back to this area from Frankfort.

I know a lot of people in this hiring process, and at this moment Burchett, Cecil, and Copley are the top three candidates. I once again personally think it is between Burchett and Cecil and maybe hire in Copley for coordinator and Alan Short also. I know others such as John Caudill who played at LC is interested in it and will have interviews this week. Hager from what I know has drawn his name out of it, but it's up to the hiring committee and superintendent Mike Armstrong and principal J.R. Cook to make sure LC get's the right guy for the job... Luke Salmons was a great coach and a great fit for LC sure did hate to see him go but any coach would do what is best for him and his family. Cabell Midland has over 2,000 kids, a turf field, better administration when it comes to sports and way better resources. I am all up for a coach improving himself and his family..

Yeah I know. I seen that well after I posted and I couldn't edit it. And I didn't feel like fixing it. I did the wrong calculations. Sorry for the confusion to everybody

Copley - .429 win %
Cecil - .414 win %
Burchett - .286 win %
Even with my embarrassing miscalculations from earlier, you can see that out these guys, Copley has had the most success with the best win percentage and the oy district championship and only regional runner-up of the 3.... And I always had an A in math in high school. :lmao:

I believe if Copely gets the job he will do a good job as well as Cecil but Copely has a GREAT off-season/season work-out and conditioning. He knows his defense also. I could possibly see him being the defensive coordinator but will he just settle with and assistant coaching job? I personally do not believe he will.

I don't think he will either. And yes, he'll work the guys in the offseason like no other.

I would say he wont be considered because back when his dad was basketball coach he hit Bulldog Vanhoose in the face at the gym.

Yes, personally from what I know of him, he will only settle for a Head coaching job somewhere.
I talk to him every now and then and when he was in Pikeville he always said that he will never be a Assistant Coach again then again I could be wrong haha

I dont see how you look at the win% with this list. Cecil is a top notch man, The kids like him and on top of all that he is a very hard worker. So what names are being added to the list?

My question is who is all on the hiring committee? And how do you get on it? I am up for anyone who is to promote the youth of lawrence county. The new era begins now....

Don't know who is on committee but Mike Armstrong will make final pick just like the basketball coach.
The committee made one choice and he chose another, for the basketball job that is.
