John Calipari criticized for cursing players!
#31
I've heard high school coaches that cuss with every breath. Who cares?

Criticize him for running one and done factories, always having teams that can't shoot free throws, and STILL not having a ring...
#32
I don't like Calipari, but I don't care about this story. Read Mark Krebs book if you want to get a real look at how Calipari is with his kids.

I understand he has his freedom of speech and I also believe that you have to deal with stuff like that sometimes.
Cursing should never be a solidified part of anything in a public forum IMO

I guess I can buy that, but I can also buy that he was in his and his teams own private sanctuary, with others encroaching it.

At least he didn't hit him. Or throw a chair across the floor

For those of you that are offended or upset with the use of the F word being used by coaches at every level in any sport have not played varsity ball of any kind. They all use it at one time or another. The F word isn't a curse word. It is obsene and is not politically correct, but I would rather a coach use that word rather than cursing a player. When coaches use this kind of vocabulary it's nothing personal and a player thinks nothing of it, it's part of the game. If you think that is the first time this kid has heard that kind of language you would be mistaken. Take it for what it's worth. It's between a player and his coach nothing else. ESPN and every other sports network need a lead in for their programs, Cal just happened to be the one on Tuesday night.

I understand where you are going with that, but it's not the F word that is considered cursing in this instance, based on the comment he made - "selfish mother******" and it being directed towards a player, that is by all definition cursing the player. I call someone a blooming idiot, that is not using a curseword, but I certainly cursed at the person. Fair?

I'll split it with you. I've seen coaches curse players, using GD you for this or that. That is cursing and there is no place for a coach like that in any sport.
selfish mother***** may be demeaning to a player but I guarantee he got the jist of it where as you GDmother****** carries a much more derogotory meaning to it. Agree?

That's the only thing in all of your rambling that I could agree with.

Rambling or not I don't remember asking anyone to agree with the statment .

LOL, again, I understand where you are coming from. But, if I accidently take your parking spot and you yell out "you GDmother*****", or yell our "you are a blooming idiot", we are scrapping all the same. When you curse someone, it's the tone, not the words and IMO, that 100% of it. I could scratch off a $1,000 winning lottery ticket and you could say "you GDmother******", and the tone will be much different, and I will be taking it much different.

As for the words themselves, it's been said already many times, these players have heard the same words used, and have heard them very often. That's a shame, and I am not saying I condone it, but I certainly understand it. I've been coaching for a long time, and my tone is much different with players. Last night during winter conditioning with our HS baseball players, I got frustrated with having to "talk over" players, my tone changed, and decibel level changed, and everyone in the gym got the message. I did not have to do it again, but I never had to use a cuss word either!

What a hoot, I did a google search, on coaches and cursing, and this was the #3 search item that popped up:

Well obviously my take on cursing and your take on it is different. To me it is the words used themselves not the tone in which you use them. The intent in which you use words mean more to me. By the way, you wouldn't take my parking spot and get away with it.

Intent and Tone, it's not the same thing? Like I said, I can use the same word and say it 10 different ways and give it 10 different meanings.

It definitely isn't a shock and we can say that it's being blown out of proportion....
but the fact remains that we are on here taking time out of our day to talk about it when there are a lot of things that are probably more productive.
So I take it that this is worth more of our time than we are letting on.

I've been cussed out by several coaches....
EVEN IN GRADE SCHOOL!

If I were playing and a coach called me what Cal called Jones...
it would do nothing constructive at all.
I understand you can do certain things that may seem a little rash to some, but they can light a fire under a player.
Calling a 19 year old kid what Cal called Jones is nothing but destructive IMO.
There is nothing constructive about it.

Terrence Jones tweets: If ur saying ur parents nvr said anything to you that hurt ur feelings and then apologized to you after, ur lying. I'm happy and blessed for playing for cal don't think otherwise

Then what should be done to Cal? Apology is not enough, meaning once it's said, it's too late to recover those words?

You really do not know what you are talking about if you think all coaches curse AT their players and call them names as Calipari did. And there is a big difference in cursing to make a point and cursing at an individual. The first is very common and must be excused to some extent but the second should never be tolerated at any level. It's wrong in the classroom, it's wrong in the workplace, and it is wrong on a basketball court in front of a national audience. Coach Cal knows that and he did the right thing by making a public apology because he embarrassed Jones very publicly.

I'm not up in arms about this at all. The fact is, none of us are in practice every day. We don't know what motivates Jones and what doesn't. Perhaps being Mr. Nice Guy doesn't get through to Jones. Calipari is obligated to motivate his players in the best way possible for the individual. Knight doesn't respond the same way Jones does to certain things. Neither does Miller or Liggins. We're all different. We all have different buttons that need to be pushed in order for us to perform.
#51
I will wager that since the incident, Terrance Jones has willing listened to music that said the F word, watched a show or movie that said the F word, and has said it several times himself.

 Exactly. There is a big difference in a coach screaming at the team in a huddle and telling the team that they are playing like a bunch of selfish mother*******s and singling a player out publicly and telling him that he is a selfish mother******. The cursing is wrong but tone and how it is targeted can make it much "wronger." Calipari absolutely did the right thing by making a public apology to Jones, not for cursing but for publicly embarrassing him.

Very much agreed. It was embarrassing for all and a learning experience for all involved.

He's a fraud... he gets on tv and acts so humble..."this is somebody's kid out there.." and all that foney baloney crap...he was just pissed because he was getting his "arrogant" tail wooped. I have never been a fan of cheaters.

CATS win or this isn't seen on national tv this is a non-issue. :please:

I really dont see what the big deal is.
These arent kids anymore. It isnt high school.
These are adults and they agreed to play for Cal.
If they dont like it they can quit, its not like its going to hurt UK this year anyways.
Im not one on cursing much, but occasionally i do, along with 99% of the worlds populations, and if anyone has turned on a tv in the last 10 years, theyve heard these terms, no matter if youre 12 or 20.
Stuff like this cracks me up. MOST coaches use that kind of language on a daily basis, even high school coaches. And when a player does something bad or stupid and the camera goes on them, read there lips, its pretty easy to tell what there saying.
From the looks of this year, Cal should probably do a lot more cursing at them. Especially after the Bama loss.

Show me an example were Coach Tubby Smith cursed his kids.
It's one thing to say a cuss word and its another to belittle and curse a young man.
