Lexington Catholic High School's Republic Bank Holiday Classic long has been regarded as the top girls' basketball tournament in Kentucky, and this year's version won't hinder that status.
The 32-team tournament will tip off at 9a.m. Saturday in both of LexCath's gyms and features 15 of the Top 25 squads in The Courier-Journal's preseason poll of coaches.
"It's a good barometer at this point and time of the season," said Mark Evans, coach of defending state champion Mercy. "There's better talent than you'll see in the state tournament, simply because there are regions with three or four teams that could compete in the state tournament that don't even get in.
"Just about all of those teams are in the Lexington Catholic tournament."
No. 1 Marion County is the defending champion after beating Manual 44-42 in last year's final. The teams could meet again in this year's final, as No. 2 Manual is on the opposite side of the bracket from Marion County.
Also in the field are No. 5 Boone County, No. 6 Mercy, No. 7 Perry County Central, No. 8 Butler, No.9 Elizabethtown and No. 10 Bowling Green.
The field also includes Dayton (Ohio) Dunbar, Huntington (W.Va.) St. Joseph Central Catholic and Naples (Fla.) Community School.
The tournament will conclude Wednesday, with semifinals set for 9 and 10:45 a.m. and the championship game at 7:30 p.m.

Girls
Thursday's first round of the Lady Dragons Holiday Hoopfest at South Oldham was postponed because of the snow. Thursday's two games have been moved to Saturday, with Collins facing Mercer County at 10:30 a.m. and Southern meeting Clark County at 12:15 p.m. The rest of the schedule is unchanged.
Pleasure Ridge Park will host the Lady Panther Winter Classic, running today through Sunday's 4p.m. championship game.
Other Louisville teams in the 12-squad field are Holy Cross, Fern Creek, Eastern and Fairdale.
Male and Presentation will represent Louisville in the Fayette County iHigh Tournament, starting today. The final is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Henry Clay.
The Western Holiday Classic is set for Saturday and Monday, with the final slated for 7:30 p.m. Monday. Joining Western in the field will be Eminence, Valley, Paris, Hancock County and North Oldham.
No. 22 Bullitt East, No. 23 Ohio County and No. 25 Lexington Christian headline the field for the Berea Holiday Classic. The 16-team event will tip off Saturday, with the final set for 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Seabury Center Arena.
The Portland Christian Christmas Tournament is set for Monday and Tuesday, with the final slated for 6 p.m. Tuesday. Joining Portland Christian in the field will be Beth Haven, Covington Latin, Whitefield Academy, Evangel Christian and Bath County.
Waggener will host the Lady Wildcats Holiday Invitational running Monday through Wednesday's 6:30 p.m. final. Other Louisville teams in the field are Doss, Seneca, Moore and Atherton.
Boys
No. 4 Clark County, No. 8 Tates Creek, No. 18 Muhlenberg County, No. 23 Henry Clay and No. 25 Lafayette headline the field for the 14-squad Fayette County Invitational, running Saturday through Wednesday's 8:15 p.m. final at Henry Clay.
Doss, Butler and Shelby County will represent the Louisville area in the event.
No. 10 Ballard, No. 16 Holmes and No.22 Moore are in the Hometown Bank Hoopin' It Up Holiday Classic at North Laurel and South Laurel. The tournament will tip off Saturday, with the final set for 8:15 p.m. Tuesday at South Laurel.
DeSales, North Oldham and Oldham County will join No. 17 North Hardin in the Fort Harrod Classic at Mercer County. The event will start Monday and conclude with Thursday's 7 p.m. final.

Three 7th Region teams in the final four along with Bowling Green.
