Johnson Central 41 Covington Cath 28

Once a Colonel Wrote:Congrats on a great win and to a great running back. Does Jude have enough of a motor to continue to carry the ball 36 times per game while advancing through the playoffs? Apparently he is one special player.

Carry the ball 36 times AND play the whole game on defense. Including making several big hits...

It takes a very talented team to lead Johnson Central at the half. I thought CovCath ran out of gas but they had plenty of talent. I have already said it in the prediction thread, but if the playoffs were an 11 on 11 competition, I think JC would have to be favored. After tonight, I am not sure that anybody is going to physically wear them down in the second half. Coming from behind in the second half is a great omen.

I was reviewing the Blue Birds schedule for it to be so much more difficult(according to the little blue birds chirping) than JC it hard to believe only Ryle & Beechwood is left in the playoff. JC had Breathitt County, Bell County, Belfry, Knox County and Boyle County. Just that that was interesting.

Dont believe anybody ever said they didn't. PTF made it sound like it was overwhelmingly one sided in the prediction thread.

I don't believe that I responded to your post, Bob. I have no idea which team is more talented but I could see which one was in better condition. It is great to watch a Johnson Central team wear down a quality playoff opponent for a change instead of struggling to hold onto an early lead.

The CC QB did seem to get a little rattled when JC began to finally to put the pressure on in the second half. I know some have made reference to some dropped passes by CC receivers as critical (which did happen), but Bir did throw a few very bad passes in the second half as well. Some were miles from being catchable balls. Something he didn't do when he was untouchable in the first half. He also panicked twice with intentional grounding calls. But all in all he played a very good game and will be a dandy the next two years. He was impressive.

Mr, jude is just agreat runner, but it seems like he dont get same press as some other players. I love that aeastern ky boy will run it down your neck.

CC....You guys have heck of a QB there. VERY impressed. GREAT footwork and smart in the pocket, I think we will be hearing this kid's name quite a bit in the next 2 years!!!!

 JC laid some pretty good hits on CovCath's receivers, too. Bir did make some mistakes but I think his line got tired and let JC put a lot more pressure on him in the 4th quarter. Did you think Bir was the best QB that JC has faced this season or did you like Madon or Boyle's quarterback better? I don't think the NKY folks appreciate how strong Bell and Boyle (or Knox) are this season.

I didn't see the Bell game, but yeah I think he was the best that I have seen them play against this year. He is very mobile with a very strong arm , while being able to throw on the run in either direction. Like I said, he is a dandy and I'm sure will continue to get better.

Hoot Gibson Wrote:In the first half, CovCath managed long drives on mostly short passes and JC responded with quick Jude TDs. JC recovered an on sides kick in the second half. CovCath contained Jude a little better in the second half, but not well enough to stop him from racking up first downs. CovCath seemed to tire some in the 4th quarter and JC began getting pressure on Bir and forced him into some mistakes. For much of the game, it looked like Johnson Central was going to be helpless against CovCath's passing attack and Jude was going to run at will against the CovCath defense.

I only remember one Johnson Central pass in the game, a completion to Jude, but I might have missed one or two. Then again, I could be mistaken about them throwing a pass.

Johnson Central is one well conditioned team. Playing a tough schedule and playing Jude, Hall, Bratton, et al. a lot of minutes both ways is paying dividends. I think Coach Matney has these players believing that they can wear down their opponents even if the opposing players play only one way.

Dont forget about Ousley, great team effort!

I didn't mean to exclude anybody, I just got tired of typing and closed with the all inclusive "et al." The hard work of the entire Johnson Central team all season shined through tonight. Purely as a spectator, this team seems like the best conditioned Golden Eagles team that I have ever seen. I agree - tonight was a total team effort.

As for the game, I watched it live on Ihigh. JC crammed it down Cov Cath's throat. Cov Cath passed the ball at will as well, killed themselves in the second half with dropped passes. I said in the prediction thread that this game would be a dandy and JC would pull out a close one and I, along with many others was right.

Congrats JC, beat Highlands next week and show everybody across the state that mountain boys can play ball. I could see 3, maybe 4 State Championships comin back to the mountains this year, it would be awesome if JC is one of em.

At will? Maybe in the first half but in the second half they seemed a little rattled on offense and couldn't get anything started until the last 4 minutes of the game after a JC penalty. I would attribute the completions to a lack of pressure in the first half and JC respecting the talent and ability of the CC receiving corps, who I must say, impressed myself and several others that sat next to me. If anyone knows anything about defense, unlike you and your Paintsville compadres since you gave up more points this season than they scored the past two seasons combined, it's tough to stay in coverage for more than 4 to 5 seconds at most. The receiver is always at an advantage because they know where they are going, and well, the defense doesn't.

Another thing, it looked as if the Eagles were trying to eliminate the deep pass which has hurt them earlier in the season. It was short, underneath routes that was effective for the Colonels and the qb was a heck of a player. You can't take away it all, but rather one (it looked like the run of CC was held in check most of the game) and contain or limit the effectiveness in the other. Great adjustments at the half lead to this one. Hats off to both teams for a good game, to the JC players and coaches for the victory.

Great game muchachos! Time to break out the ginger ale and wait for Mercedes to call.
#46
I want to give a big thumbs up to JC kicker Trent Davis 5-5 on extra points, a big onside kick to start the 2nd half, a kickoff into the endzone, a 51 yard punt, a squib kick that was almost recovered before it went out of bounds and a TD saving tackle on a kickoff return.

Yea, that's what I was getting at. I watched the game on the net, you could tell JC was preventing CC from beating them with the deep ball. The corners were lining up 10-12 yards off the WR, which led to the short underneath passes like you said. Can't blame em, two years ago Highlands killed JC with the deep ball.

Didn't Highlands just beat Cov Cath by 2 points? I have never been one to compare scores, but JC dominated CC on the ground, what kind of run defense does Highlands have. I don't know anything about Highlands this year, do they run or pass the ball.

Highlands jumped out 20 to 0 and hung on for a 27 to 20 victory. Highlands is balanced but they aren't as good as they usually are on both sides of the line of scrimmage. They will not wear down though as they play a ton of players. They can be ran on but not to the tune of 450 yards. Maybe 250!!!

JJ isn't the only threat JC has as far runnin the ball. Can't forget about JK Hall. When needed, he break loose at any time and take it 80 yards to the house. Could have done it against Cov Cath but it wasn't needed with Jude averaging 12 yards a carry. Bratton and Ousley are both big powerful backs that can rack up yards as well by running thru and over defenders.
