Former Bell County star shines for Western Kentucky Univ.
#1
Redshirt Freshman Monte Merrick took over for Senior Casey Tinius after Tinius misses his 6th field goal of the year. Merrick booted a 36 yarder and a 46 yarder for Westerns only points in a 36-6 loss to North Texas. I know Merrick broke some records at Bell County and now has a chance to break some at Western.

Glad to Monte finally get his oppotunity to shine and he did! Hopefully Willie Taggart will make him the permanent starter for the rest of the season!

Good Job!!! #11 Keep working hard. Hope to see you in Dec.

Outstanding! Love to see kids from East KY do well.

Congratulations to Merrick!! They said he took over kickoff duties last week, and this week has taken the placekicking job. Found several articles out of Bowling Green and ESPN, etc.

Congrats to a great kicker!

On another note, WKY has been terrible since entering D1. Losing 29 out of 31 games and had an 18 game losing streak continuing into this season. I couldn't believe it had been that bad.

That is typical of teams making the jump to BCS level.

Marshall is 1 of the few that excelled early in their move.

He is easily one of the best kickers I have had the opportunity to witness in person. I'll never forget watching him warmup and kick in the 20008 Boyle/Bell game. Good luck to Monte.

I seen this kid play on several occasions when he was at Bell.
He was hands down the best kicker i had ever seen in person at the high school level.
Congrats kid.

Merrick was awarded the Army ROTC plaque for MVP of Game; He also was special teams MVP; named a Captain for the game Saturday and will handle kickoffs and placekicking duties going forward. In one article Coach Taggart said "Monte's in the driver's seat!!" Congratulations to Merrick from all the Bobcat Nation. We look forward to seeing you in Bowling Green at the 4-A championship game!! LOL!!!

Actually Western broke a 27 game losing streak two weeks ago against Louisiana Lafyette. It was the longest losing streak in the country.
