Holy Cross played without its regular starting quarterback Friday night against Bishop Brossart. It was hard to tell.

The Indians got 117 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 12 carries from senior running back Chad Fuller and 221 yards of total offense from younger brother and replacement quarterback Kyle Fuller in a 56-14 win against Brossart at Scott to wrap up the regular season and head into the postseason.
Holy Cross (5-5) will host Carroll County in a Class AA first round game. Coach Bruce Kozerski said he believes the game will be at Scott but not all details have been finalized.

Brossart (6-4) opens up its Class A postseason next Friday at Frankfort.

Holy Cross’ regular starting quarterback Jerry Arlinghaus did not play in the game because he's on a senior retreat this weekend. Kyle Fuller, a junior, stepped in and completed six of 10 passes for 124 yards and one touchdown, while adding another 97 yards on the ground. He also made six of seven extra point attempts as the kicker.

“I thought he played efficient,” said Kozerski. “I don’t think anybody expected him to play as well as Jerry, but he played very efficient.”

Kozerski pointed to Holy Cross’ first play from scrimmage as an example. The original play call was for a quick short pass, but the coverage dictated differently and Fuller adjusted to complete a 23-yard pass to Josh Jasper.

The Indians needed just four plays to go 69 yards for their first touchdown. Chad Fuller ran the ball into the end zone from the 1-yard line to put Holy Cross up.

Brossart tied the score on a 45-yard pass from quarterback Jesse Orth to running back Ryan Enzweiler with one second left in the first quarter.

Holy Cross snatched the momentum right back on the first play of the second quarter. Kyle Fuller kept the ball around the right end and went 53 yards for the touchdown.

That began a run of 28 straight points by the Indians in the second quarter to push the game out of reach by halftime.

Justin Kohake returned a punt 52 yards for a touchdown as part of that scoring barrage. All told in the first half, Holy Cross needed just 12 plays and 4:47 of the clock to score four offensive touchdowns.

“We weren’t going to let Jerry being out stop us from doing anything,” said Chad Fuller. “We practiced all week with my younger brother and he threw the ball well. We had all of the confidence in him. We hit them fast and hit them from the beginning.”

Brossart, competing in varsity football for just the fourth season, completed its first winning season. The Mustangs finished 5-5 last year before losing to Frankfort, 16-7, in the first round of the playoffs. They will get another shot at winning a first playoff game.

“We’ve earned the playoffs,” said Brossart coach Matt Reinhart. “Frankfort is tough, but we played them tough last year and we feel we match up with them fairly well. If our kids come out to play, we’ll give them a game.”

Kozerski said he was pleased with his team’s final regular season performance and is ready for the playoffs.

“You no longer have a schedule,” said Kozerski. “You have a date. And if a date doesn’t go well, like any other date that doesn’t go well, it’s off.”
