Simon Kenton (0-1) at Dixie Heights (1-1)
WHEN/WHERE: 7 p.m. today; 3010 Dixie Highway, Edgewood
WHAT TO WATCH: Dixie Heights offers quite a dilemma for Simon Kenton, which, despite last week's 34-0 loss to Middletown, should have one of the area's best defenses. Dixie Heights junior running back Seth Bruns is becoming one of the area's most exciting runners. The 5-foot-8, 155-pound speedster has carried just 24 times, but has 290 yards rushing and four rushing touchdowns. And last week the Colonels welcomed back Goose Cohorn, who missed the opener with a knee injury. Both those guys are big playmakers.
BOTTOM LINE: Simon Kenton, coming off a 34-0 loss to Middletown, should postits first victory of the season.
Bellevue (1-1) at Holmes (1-0)
WHEN/WHERE: 7 p.m. today; 2500 Madison Ave., Covington
WHAT TO WATCH: Most teams are going to have a hard time covering Holmes sophomore receiver Desean Peterson, and the Tigers probably won't be much different. Peterson caught five passes for 122 yards and a touchdown in last week's win over Lloyd. The Tigers might want to double-cover Peterson, but that puts one less player to stop the running game led by Damian Oden and Greg Clemons. It's pick your poison time for Bellevue.
BOTTOM LINE: Holmes, which looked very impressive in a season-opening 46-0 win over Lloyd, should move to 2-0.
Beechwood (0-1) at Highlands (2-0)
WHEN/WHERE: 7 p.m. today; 2400 Memorial Parkway
WHAT TO WATCH: Highlands running back Jordan Streeter has been the Bluebirds' big-play running back. He's rushed for 168 yards on just 22 carries, but he's yet to score a touchdown. Look for the senior to get into the end zone tonight.
BOTTOM LINE: This game will make Beechwood better for the Class 1A stretch run, but that doesn't mean the Tigers can compete tonight. Highlands is a heavy favorite.
Conner (2-0) at Lloyd (0-1)
WHEN/WHERE: 7 p.m. today; 450 Bartlett Ave., Erlanger
WHAT TO WATCH: Conner has the makings of a very good receiving corps. Taylor Miller has 11 catches for 169 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore Cameron Fogle and senior Michael Mueller have combined for eight catches and 126 yards.
BOTTOM LINE: Lloyd has lost five in a row dating back to last season. Conner won this game 64-0 last season. On paper, this is another mismatch in Conner's favor.
Newport (0-1) at Pendleton County (1-0)
WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today; 35 Wright Rd., Butler
WHAT TO WATCH: Newport quarterback Demetri Brown rushed for 113 yards and two touchdowns on just 14 carries in last week's loss to Bellevue; he also threw for 173 yards and two touchdowns on just eight completions. The kid is a big play waiting to happen.
BOTTOM LINE: Newport lost a close one last week - 35-34 to Bellevue. Look for the Wildcats to bounce back. in another close game.
Covington Catholic (1-1) at LaSalle (1-0)
WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today; 3091 North Bend Rd., Cincinnati
WHAT TO WATCH: Last week LaSalle shut out Lakota West. If the Colonels can't keep the Lancers out of their backfield, it's going to be a long night.
BOTTOM LINE: The outcome could depend on which Covington Catholic team shows up. The Week 0 team, the one that lost 61-7 to Ryle, could suffer another blowout loss. The Week 1 team, which won last week at Lexington Catholic, should give the Lancers problems.
Scott (0-1) at Cooper (0-1)
WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today; 2855 Longbranch Rd., Union
WHAT TO WATCH: Cooper turned some heads in last week's loss at state power Johnson Central. Dvontae Bradley, who rushed for 180 yards at Johnson Central, should allow the Jaguars to control the tempo of this game from start to finish.
BOTTOM LINE: The Jaguars should feel more comfortable against a team more on its level. They should bounce back with a win.
Carroll County (2-0) at Ludlow (0-1)
WHEN/WHERE: 7 p.m. today; Rigney Stadium, Ludlow
WHAT TO WATCH: Carroll County running back Carson Butcher has rushed for 299 yards and four touchdowns. The Panthers have allowed just 50 yards of offense through two games - 37 rushing and 13 passing.
BOTTOM LINE: Carroll County won its first two games by a combined score of 84-2. Although this affair shouldn't be so lopsided, Carroll is the favorite.
Dayton (0-1) at Taylor (1-0)
WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today; 36 East Harrison Ave., North Bend
WHAT TO WATCH: Taylor scored on two safeties last week and intercepted three passes. If the Greendevils aren't sharp offensively, the Yellowjackets will make game-changing plays.
BOTTOM LINE: Taylor beat Ludlow last week 36-20, so this should be a pretty good measuring stick to where Dayton stands in Northern Kentucky's Class 1A district.
Campbell County (1-0) at Roger Bacon (1-0)
WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today; Bron Bacevich Stadium, Cincinnati
WHAT TO WATCH: Roger Bacon picked off three passes in last week's come-from-behind victory over Mount Healthy. Against the Camels, who struggled with interceptions last season, don't be surprised of the Spartans pick off a couple more.
BOTTOM LINE: Campbell County opened its season with an impressive victory at Norwood last week. Back-to-back wins over Cincinnati programs would give the Camels a big confidence boost.
Madison Central (1-1) vs. NewCath (2-0)
WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today; 900 E. Sixth St., Newport
WHAT TO WATCH: Madison Central allowed 261 rushing yards last week to Bell County. NewCath should be able to run the ball effectively.
BOTTOM LINE: Madison Central beat the Thoroughbreds' 38-12 last season. But so far, NewCath looks like an improved team. Don't be surprised if NewCath pulls off a victory against its Class 6A counterpart.
Boone County (1-0) at Scott County (0-1)
WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today; Toyota Stadium, Georgetown
WHAT TO WATCH: By all accounts, this year's Boone County team is made in the same mold as most of its previous teams: physical, run-driven, solid defensively. Although the Rebels have been criticized in the past for lack of a passing game, in their opener, they were very efficient through the air.
BOTTOM LINE: Boone County went down to Lexington last week and pulled off a big upset over Henry Clay. This week the Rebels take another trip down I-75. And this time they're probably the favorite.
Simon Kenton (0-1) at Dixie Heights (1-1)
WHEN/WHERE: 7 p.m. today; 3010 Dixie Highway, Edgewood
WHAT TO WATCH: Dixie Heights offers quite a dilemma for Simon Kenton, which, despite last week's 34-0 loss to Middletown, should have one of the area's best defenses.
