It might not have been made public, but this was pretty much a done deal a few days after Henley resigned from Holmes and Booher expressed interest in the job.

The hottest name in Kentucky high school basketball coaching is the newest coach at Northern Kentucky's most successful program.

Jason Booher, who made history by leading Shelby Valley to All "A" Classic and KHSAA state titles this year, will be the new boys' basketball coach at Holmes. Covington superintedent Lynda Jackson cofirmed the hire this morning.

Jackson made the final decision after a hiring committee made up of Holmes staff narrowed the field of candidates to Booher and Louisville Moore coach Larry Miller.

Jackson said Booher stood out.

"It was a combination of his passion about educating students and his experience of working with a variety of students and players over the years," said Jackson. "He really has a commitment of growing our program from the elementary through the high school and a commitment to working in the community and giving back."

And, obviously, Booher knows the game. In six seasons at Shelby Valley he posted a 160-37 record and four 15th Region titles. During his tenure, the small mountain school won back-to-back All "A" Classic state titles in 2009 and 2010. This year, led by Mr. Basketball Elisha Justice, the Wildcats reached the Sweet Sixteen state finals where they upset Louisville Ballard.

"What was interesting about Jason winning the state title, was that he accomplished the goal with a Class A school," said Jackson. "When you win a state title – like Holmes did – it’s a combination of perseverance and desire and hard work. To get a coach that can bring all those things together, that’s special."

Booher takes over for David Henley, who resigned last month after 13 years at the school to take the head coaching job at North Oldham. Henley led the Bulldogs to four Ninth Region titles in six years and won the 2009 state title.

Jackson said Booher probably will travel to Covington on Tuesday to meet with the team.

it is official coach jason booher called his players in the locker this morning and as tears fell from his eyes said ill be taking the covington holmes job. I have been expecting this for a while now. Booher always had a scouting report for every team valley played. He was a good coach with alot of good help. He told his boys that they will have a completly new coaching staff. I wish him nuttin but the best. Good Luck Coach!

He admitted that it will be difficult to leave Shelby Valley.


Booher said, "the past six years at Shelby Valley High School have been great it was a very tough decision to leave because of all the success we have had here and the relationships that were built."


He plans to bring the same system that flourished at Shelby Valley to his new team.

Rodney Wright and Greg Newsome, I dont see coming. Both have kids that are at Pikeville. I just dont see them 2 leaving

I'd assume then that Holmes' assistants Hall, Stubblefield, and Wimzie will all be kept then.

I think those 3 with Booher would be a great fit for all involved.

it is offical jason booher resigned today at shelby valley and told his boys that he was leaving.he will be do a good job at holmes but everyone has to think about all the juniors that are going to be seniors this year how dirty they got it there the ones who the worst part of it. and i agree with whoever said this let the coaching chaos at shelby valley begin it will be really good to see who will get it and why......

From what I've seen, Booher likes to take his teams out of state for the holiday tournaments and I wouldn't be surprised to see him bring Holmes to the mountains either.

I don't see any way that Holmes would be playing SV this coming year. Valley will be in full-blown rebuilding mode, and I expect the schedule to be significantly softer than the last couple years.

Maybe when SV reloads here in 2-3 years, they can arrange a home-and-home with Holmes.

No, I still see Holmes looking to play a schedule against the States most consistent programs and look for the games with more of an inter-state flavor. Not much room on the schedule for too many games that requires either team a three hour plus drive for one game.

Congrats to Holmes on landing a very good coach for their program, however, don't look for him to be there long enough to stack up many wins, his sights are set much higher than a high school position in Northern Kentucky. I see him breaking into the college ranks within the next 2 years.
