Referee attacked after middle school basketball game

Story 0 Comments Font Size: Two people are taken away in handcuffs, after a confrontation with a referee that landed him in the emergency room.

Police in Letcher County say the man and woman weren't happy with how the referee called a middle school girls' basketball game.

Michael Eldridge, the referee, told police Billy Smith beat him, and Smith's sister, Nikki Sanders, cursed at him after the game, which was played at Cowan Elementary School.

Eldridge claims Smith struck him repeatedly in the head and arms, causing some minor injuries.

Eldridge says during the attack, Sanders cursed his officiating and pushed him.

Smith and Sanders were arrested Tuesday, and booked at the Letcher County Jail.

Letcher County Sheriff Danny Webb says fights can happen, but he does not remember the last time a referee was attacked at a game.

Letcher County Schools Superintendent Anna Craft would not comment on the investigation, but says the schools do everything they can to keep crowds under control.

Police did not respond until after the attack. Sheriff Webb says his department simply does not have the resources to be present at every game.

"We got seven schools, and each one of them may have a game going on," Webb said. "Sometimes they happen on the same night, so it makes it hard to respond to everything."

Smith is charged with misdemeanor assault on a sports official, and Sanders is charged with menacing.

If convicted, Smith could face up to a year in jail.

Eldridge, the referee, didn't want to comment about the incident.
